N.L. Gearing Up for Alert Level 3

Newfoundland and Labrador is gearing up for Alert Level 3 on Monday, June 8th, 2020.

Under Alert Level 3, the following are permitted:

• Gatherings at funerals, weddings, burials with up to 20 people; as long as physical distancing is maintained.
• Overnight stays, with restrictions, at campsites.
• Summer day camp operation, with restrictions.
• Medium-risk sports, but spectators must maintain distance.
• Outdoor pools operations, with capacity restrictions.
• The reopening of private health clinics.
• The reopening of retail stores, with restrictions.
• Sales of scratch and break-open lottery tickets.
• The reopening of spas, aesthetic services, hair salons, tattoo shops and tanning salons.
• The reopening of restaurants, with reduced capacity. Buffets remain prohibited.

Amos Comenius Memorial Grads (Audio)

The Amos Comenius Memorial School held their High School Graduation this past weekend in Hopedale.

Nain DHSD Pride Month

The Nain Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development are calling this month of June “Pride Month”.

The COVID-19 won’t stop them from continuing to spread PRIDE throughout Nain.

The DHSD are asking people to decorate your windows in support.

They want a community where all genders and sexualities are supported and celebrated.

To those who participant in the window decorating and post your photo online, on the DHSD Facebook page, show your support you might win a prize pack.

Domestic Fishing Licenses

Domestic Fishing Licenses JUNE 3, 2020 – Due to the ongoing global Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the Nunatsiavut Government will be offering domestic fishing licenses in area 12-E and the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area by appointment only.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement will be required to call the Nunatsiavut Government office in their respective community to schedule a time to receive a communal fishing designation.

Existing licenses are in effect until June 15, 2020. Beneficiaries who set nets for domestic use in tidal waters of 12-E and Labrador Inuit Settlement Area will require a designation from the Nunatsiavut Government after June 15, 2020. Signing a Designation is not required and the scheduling of an appointment will minimize waiting times to receive your License and tags.

No New Cases in the Province

There are NO NEW confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador since yesterday.

The TOTAL NUMBER of confirmed cases in the province is now 261.

There are TWO active cases, ONE of whom is in hospital within the Eastern Health Region.
The regional breakdown of the 261 cases is as follows:
• Eastern Health – 243
• Central Health – 8
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 6
• Western Health – 4

52% of cases are female and 48% are male.

By age, there are 22 people 19 years old and under, 38 between 20 and 39, 39 between 40 and 49, 58 between 50 and 59, 57 between 60 and 69, and 47 who are 70 years old and above.

• One (1) person is in hospital due to the virus.
• 256 people have now recovered.
• There have been three (3) deaths from COVID-19.

To date, 12,619 people have been tested.

NG Begins Relaxing Position on Non-Essential Travel (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government announced that it will begin to relax its position on non-essential travel within the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area.

Effective immediately, the Nunatsiavut Government will no longer be requesting people to not travel to the Labrador Inuit communities, unless they have been directed to self-isolate or to self-monitor for symptoms of the coronavirus COVID-19.

Further statements will be made at a later time regarding the position on non-essential travel to the Labrador Inuit Settlement from outside the region.

The Nunatsiavut Government continues to remind all travelers to practice generally-accepted public health protocols to help prevent potential exposure and spread of COVID-19.

House of Assembly Reopens June 9th

The House of Assembly is reopening on Tuesday, June 9th, to conduct business not attended to due to the pandemic.

That’s the day after the province officially moves to the next alert level and the easing of more public health restrictions.

The House will convene with all members exercising appropriate physical distancing.

The public gallery and speaker’s gallery will be closed to the public and employees, while the Press Gallery will be open with a cap on the maximum number of media attending at one time to ensure appropriate physical distancing.

No New Cases For the Province

Yesterday, June 2nd, Newfoundland and Labrador announced that there were no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The total number of confirmed cases in the province remains at 261.

The regional breakdown of the 261 cases is as follows:

• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 6
• Western Health – 4

Fifty-two per cent of cases are female and forty-eight per cent are male.

Sivunivut Inuit Community Corporation (Audio)

The Sivunivut Inuit Community Corporation is quite busy with their community freezer.

We spoke with Maxine Winters who is the Chair Person for Sivunivut.

She says they deliver to elders who are 55 years and older on Fridays.

And they are offering paint and other necessitates to their community members in North West River.
