35 NHL Players Tests Positive for COVID-19

The National Hockey League announced Monday that 35 hockey players have tested positive for COVID-19 since June 8.

The league released a statement saying that as of Monday, 23 of the 396 players who participated in club training and practice during the second phase of its reopening plan have tested positive for COVID-19.

The NHL said it is aware of 12 additional players who have tested positive but weren’t involved in the reopening training and practice.

The players involved in the reopening training and practice were given “in excess of” 2,900 coronavirus tests, including more than 1,400 in the past week, the statement read.

“All Players who have tested positive have been self-isolated and are following CDC and Health Canada protocols,” the statement said, referring to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The NHL will continue to provide regular updates on the number of tests administered to players and the results of those tests,” it continued. “The league will not be providing information on the identity of the players or clubs.”

Canada approved the NHL’s plan last month to permit teams to play in the country and begin a new playoff season. Canada requires people entering from the U.S. to quarantine for 14 days through at least July 21, but the country gave an exemption to allow the NHL to resume.

Sports have been for the most part canceled during the coronavirus pandemic after health officials have warned that large gatherings of people could help spread the virus.

Fuel Prices to Increase

Price increase predicted for all fuels this week.

Consumer Group for Fair for Gas Prices expects to see an increase across the board tomorrow, with three cents per litre spike in the price of gasoline.

Spokesperson, George Murphy’s numbers show around a 2.9 cents increase for diesel, and similar increase of 2.7 cents for heating and stove oil.

New Resources for School Year

Education Minister allocated extra resources for new school year.

Minister Brian Warr says additional resources will be allocated where necessary for extra cleaning required for a safe K-grade 12 education system.

The “back to school plan” does not specifically allocate additional resources even though some of the measures would seem to require such.

He says they will have extra instructional staff in schools come September under phase three of the Education Action Plan.

In total, an additional 171 resources will be put in schools across the province. As for the school size, Warr says Newfoundland and Labrador is right there with rest of Atlantic Canada.

NAPE – which represent many non-teaching staff, including some bus drivers – the situation presents an enormous challenge. President Jerry Earle says time is not on their side with schools opening only two months from now.

He notes that student assistants sometimes travel with students on the buses and they have only six to seven weeks to put everything together.

NICG Summer Projects (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is busy with a few projects for this summer.

We spoke with the AngajukKâk of the Nain ICG, Joe Dicker.

He says one of the few projects they have started is the renovation of the Nain Husky Centre.

Due to late arrival of the materials last fall, they had to wait until this summer to start renovating.

Also due to the COVID-19, the contractors were delayed to come in to town to do their work.
