Another new case of COVID-19 in the province

There is another new case of COVID-19 in the province, again in central Newfoundland.

The person, a female under the age of 20, is a close contact with the man who tested positive yesterday. He is between 20 and 29 years of age and tested positive after returning to Newfoundland from Ontario.

Contact tracing is underway.

The provincial total is 264 and 22,710 people have been tested, to date.

The province has “relaxed rules” for rotational workers where they would be able to isolate with their families.

According to Dr. Fitzgerald, many of those workers come from a situation where they are basically isolating all the time which is hard on everybody involved.

The provincial government says maintaining physical distance from household members is not necessary unless they are symptomatic.

She says people may go out to play with their family while self-isolating and these are the risks individual families need to make decisions on.

The Canada Revenue Agency says there’s a scam on the go from people claiming to be representing them.

This one involves a pitch for a payback of money from the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) programs.

Revenue Canada warns that the fraudsters may communicate with potential victims via text message, phone call or email.

Another giveaway that it is a scam is the agency will never threaten arrest if you don’t make an immediate payment.

If you get a text message saying you received a deposit for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. Beware it is a scam.

Do not reply or click on the link, delete the text and warn others.

Make sure you have the right link or number before you apply.

You can either apply online at Canada.ca/Coronavirus or by automated toll-free phone at 1-800-959-2019 or 1-800-959-2041 (bilingual).

The CRA never uses text messages or instant messaging such as Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp to communicate with taxpayers under any circumstance.

If a taxpayer receives text or instant messages claiming to be from the CRA, they are scams.

To report a scam, you can call the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

NL Alliance Opens Nominations for Elections

The Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance is hoping for candidates in all 40 districts this time around as a new provincial election is on the horizon.

Candidate applications open today to represent the party in a future election.

The political party was formed by former PC party president Graydon Pelly in time for the election last year, ultimately only attracting 9 candidates. This time around they’re hoping for a full slate.

Pelly says with everything happening with COVID-19, now is a good opportunity to get the process going.

He indicates he was contacted by the president of NL Alliance, and the executive felt this was a good opportunity to get people who are interested in running for the next general election.

Pelly says this will give people the chance to get ready to build their teams and get their message out, across the province.

As for a fall election, Pelly states that anything can happen in Newfoundland and Labrador politics, so they want to make sure they take every opportunity to ensure they are ready when the time comes.

Interested candidates are asked to fill out a form on the party’s website at http://www.nlalliance.ca/run/.
