Labrador Friendship Centre Programs (Audio to be added later)

The Labrador Friendship Centre is busy with some programs for people from along the coast.

Patti Maloney is the Community Outreach Worker.

She says they are currently accepting applications for the Back-to-School Program and the deadline to apply is August 28th.

On September 2nd, she is also planning on starting the Women’s Program in the multipurpose room from 7-9pm.

Maloney adds that due to the pandemic, they haven’t been able to hold their Seniors Wellness lunch.

Youth Activities

OK radio contacted the Youth workers to see what they had on the go for this month.

Star Webb is the Summer Student.

Today, the Literacy instructors will be coming to make some burgers and homemade fries at the youth centre for ages 13 years to 30 years from 1pm-3:30pm.

Since there has not been much interest for the kayak training, people who didn’t finish their Papier-mâché can come into the youth centre tomorrow to do so from 1pm-3:30pm.

Thursday, August 20th, Samantha Saksagiak and Starr Webb will partner together to do an “Inuktitut Afternoon”.

They will play Inuktitut bingo and Around the Igloo down to the youth Centre from 1:00pm-3:30pm

On Friday, August 21st, there will be a scavenger hunt for ages 13 to 30.

The winner who gets all the rocks will get a prize of a $50 iTunes card.

There will be color coded rocks all over town and there will be hints available.

The participants will then be asked to bring them to the youth centre.

On August 24th, there will be a movie day.

There will be popcorn provided and the movie hasn’t been decided yet.

Etienne Rich the New Grand Chief of the Innu Nation

Etienne Rich has been elected the new Grand Chief of the Innu Nation in Labrador — after an election process that took place Friday evening.

The Innu Nation has also elected a Deputy Grand Chief, and Board of Directors representing about 3200 members of the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu First Nations.

Rich, who is from Sheshatshiu, was previously Deputy Grand Chief. He was elected with a total of 337 votes — beating out seven other competitors.

Mary Ann Nui will be the Deputy Grand Chief. She received 668 votes, beating out five competitors including the former Grand Chief, Gregory Rich.

There are four new members on the board of directors for Sheshatshiu: Jodie Ashini, Mary Janet Hill, Christopher Rich and Pien Selma.

New members for the board of directors in Natuashish include Virginia Collins and Leon Tshakapesh.

Since 1992, the Innu Nation has had gender equity on its board of directors.

Newly elected members will serve a three-year term, including the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief, will begin their new duties immediately.

No New Confirmed Cases of COVID-19

Yesterday, Monday, August 17, Newfoundland and Labrador had no new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The province has two active cases.

263 people have recovered from the virus.

To date, 28,668 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

George Lane Dart Tournament Results

The George Lane Dart Tournament was held this past weekend in Hopedale.

We contacted Jill Nitsman who was on the committee along with Jim Tuttauk and Allen Vincent.

She says they had a total of 8 teams participate in the tournament.

Here are the results:

1st place with a prize of $2000 went to Maggie Jararuse, Billy Jararuse, Stonia Nochasak and Simeon Nochasak.

2nd place with a prize of $1000 went to Jill Nitsman, Mike Mitsuk, Levi Nochasak and Danielle Pottle.

3rd place with a prize of $500 went to Jimmy Tuttauk, Allen Vincent, Teri Winters and Kendra Winters.

Nitsman adds that the tournament turned out great, considering all the restrictions due to COVID-19, and hopes to be better each year.

KMJ Construction Ltd Update

KMJ Construction Ltd is quite busy with home renovations on the north coast.

We spoke with the owner Richard Manning.

He says next Monday they will be in Nain to complete 3 homes for renovations.

In total KMJ Construction Ltd will complete 36 home renovations on the north coast.

Right now they completed work in Makkovik, Rigolet and Postville.

Manning adds they do many different types of construction work; such as Concrete, Carpentry, Plaster, Painting, Landscaping, and Major and or Minor Renovations.

And adds that they have 3 members from Nain hired and he is still looking for some local contractor helpers and laborers to do work in Nain.

He arrives to Nain on Monday August 24 and they start renovations on Tuesday.

He adds that he will be traveling to Hopedale to complete 6 home renovations.

Back to School Plan (Audio to be added later)

Students will be returning to school classes on Wednesday, September 9th, later date than the regular back to the school date.

Dean Ingram is the President of Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association (NLTA).

He says a live video conference was held through VOCM and CBC yesterday about some plans for students returning to classes.

Ingram says wearing masks is not mandatory for students, the classroom sizes are not changed, there’s work in social distancing, which include all other concerns that was brought forward at the live conference.

Youth Centre Activities

The Nain Youth Outreach Worker and the Summer Student are busy with activities.

Crystal Allen-Webb is the Youth Outreach Worker and Starr Webb is the Summer Student.

Allen-Webb says she will be giving youth a chance to go swimming up to the new dam today.

To now, three youth are attending.

She says the Literacy Activity based instructors will be making some burgers tomorrow at the Youth Centre from 1-3:30pm for ages 13 to 30.

Senior’s Summer Program

This week is the last week for the Seniors Summer Program this year.

Keryn Andersen is the Program Coordinator for the seniors.

She says the programs takes place at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre from 1 to 3pm.

The schedule for the week is as follows:

Today is Carnival Day, where the seniors dress up funny and get a chance to win two bingo cards, one from Recreation and other from Fire Brigade.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 18 will be picnic day out by the JS Centre.

Seniors will have card games on Wednesday.

Thursday, August 20th will be merchandise bingo.

Throughout the Senior’s Summer Program, their names are entered for a draw for a chance to win a grocery hamper valued at $250.

Friday, August 21st is the last day for the Seniors Summer Program.

Dinner will be served followed by bingo with cash prizes, and the door prize will be drawn for the end of the program.

Andersen adds that the senior’s van is available and the number to call is 922-2944.

Seniors are asked to wear masks in the van at all times where social distancing cannot be maintained.
