No New Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Yesterday, Newfoundland and Labrador had no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province has no active cases.

265 people have recovered from the virus and to date, 30,574 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

COVID-19 Emergency Food Supplement Support Program Being Extended

The Nunatsiavut Government wishes to advise Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement that the assistance under the COVID-19 Emergency Supplement Program has been extended to the week ending September 26, 2020.

The Food Supplement Program is geared towards helping individuals and families impacted by COVID-19 and those most vulnerable to the virus.

Priority will be given to seniors (60 years and older and on fixed incomes), persons with disabilities, single parents, low-income families receiving income support, living on fixed-pension incomes or employment insurance, and individuals and families who have had their employment hours cut or have been laid off because of the pandemic.

NICG Notice of Nomination for Councillor

Notice is hereby given by the Inuit Community Government of Nain that nominations will be accepted for the positions of Councillors for the upcoming By-election to be held on the 23rd day of September, 2020 at the Nain Inuit community Government office.

Nominations will be accepted beginning on Wednesday, the 26th day of August, 2020 between the hours of 9am and 4pm and will close on Wednesday, the 2nd of September, 2020. During the aforesaid dates with the exceptions of the days Saturday and Sunday.

Nain DHSD Update/Face Mask Volunteers (Audio to be added later)

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development are quite busy with activities.

We spoke with Elsie Russell who is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker.

She says starting this September they will have planned activities for FASD and Suicide Awareness Day.

Russell says since April she was volunteering her time with other volunteers in Nain to help make cloth face masks.

Their goal is to make 1,154 cloth face masks for Nain.

MUN Release Masks Permitted

Memorial University compiled a policy regarding face coverings on August 24.

Masks are now mandatory at all indoor public facilities including all common areas in Memorial.

The University says that will also include in Memorial- owned vehicles transporting more than one person, when entering and exiting classrooms, but not in the classroom when social distancing can be achieved, and in lunchrooms when not seated.

People are asked to supply their own mask but Campus Enforcement and Patrol does have a limited supply. Anyone wishing to report non-compliance can do so through MUN Safe.

Exceptions to the mandatory mask policy include individuals wearing religious masks coverings, and in the chapel when the two- meter distance can be achieved.

Fuel Price Predictions

The Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices is predicting the price of gasoline go up this week.

According to Spokesperson, George Murphy, the price of gasoline will increase by 2.4 cents a litre.

Heating and stove oils along with diesel will drop by about half a cent a litre each.

Last Week of the Summer Literacy Program (Audio to be added later)

It is the last week of Literacy Camp with Frontier College in Inuit Nunagat.

We spoke with Julia Dicker who is one of the Instructors of the Literacy Camp.

They are asking parents that their children bring masks with them to our next programs on Wednesday and Thursday.

If they don’t have one, we have medical masks they can have 😊

Today, it’s crazy hat day. There will be a prize for the best crazy hat.

Youth Activities

The summer student and the youth outreach worker are both busy down at the Youth Centre.

Starr Webb is the youth summer student.

This morning, they were busy making face masks for youth for when they come to the activities.

Today, August 25th, Ethan Angnatok will be doing some cooking from 1-3:30pm.

They are thinking on making some nachos.

On August 26th, weather permitting, they will be doing a water balloon fight and have ice cream from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

Weather permitting; they will be doing a movie day. They are undecided on what to watch as of yet.

August 27th, weather permitting; they will be doing some berry picking.

If they can’t go berry picking, they will be doing a cooking day. They haven’t decided on what to cook yet.

They haven’t been doing much planning this week due to making face masks this morning.

We will have more information on youth activities once they become finalized.

Election for President Set for Oct.6

There is one week left for the nominations for the Nunatsiavut Government’s President Election.

Nunatsiavut’s First Minister Tyler Edmunds announced on August 18 that the election for President of Nunatsiavut will take place on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.

Nominations will close at 12 noon (AST) on September 1, 2020, at the office of the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer, 14 Corte Real Road, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.

Advanced polls will be held within 10 days prior to the election.

The election was originally scheduled to take place on May 5, but was postponed amid growing concerns over the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, and to ensure the process is properly conducted in accordance with the spirit, intent and requirements of the Labrador Inuit Constitution and the Nunatsiavut Elections Act.

In keeping with Section 116A of the Elections Act, Sarah Townley has been appointed to serve as the moderator for a mandatory Inuktitut debate for candidates vying for the office of President.

As per the Act, the moderator shall, within seven days (between September 2-8, 2020 inclusive) of the close of nominations, convene and moderate the debate.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement are advised that measures will be implemented at all polling stations to prevent potential exposure and transmission of COVID-19.

Measures may include restricting the number of people at polling stations at the same time, and ensuring safe distances (of at least two meters) between all individuals. Hand sanitizers will be available, and all areas within the polling stations will be disinfected regularly.
