No New Confirmed Cases

Yesterday, Thursday, September 24, the province of NL continues with no new cases with one active case.

268 people have recovered with a total of 272 cases.

Up to date, 39,542 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

NICG Projects Update (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is busy with their summer projects.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain ICG.

He says the upgrade and repairs on the airstrip is done by Budgells is now complete.

They also started working on their first waterline replacements on Sandbanks Road.

Dickers adds that they are waiting on a few touch ups on the Nain Husky Centre.

Nalcor’s Majoy Milestone

The Muskrat Falls Project has reached a major milestone with first power flow from Muskrat Falls. Last evening, the first unit at Muskrat was successfully synced to the electricity grid in Labrador.

Nalcor says testing on the first generating unit will continue over the next few weeks, prior to putting the unit in service this fall.

During the commissioning period, power generated at Muskrat Falls will be added to the Labrador electricity grid. Power from the second unit is expected later this year, with the third and fourth units coming online in 2021.

A further update on the project will come in about a week. Nalcor and GE are still working on the software problem which is preventing the transmission of electricity from Labrador to the island.

Gas Predictions

Drivers are waking up to gas price increases across the province this morning.

The price of gas is up by 4.2 cents per litre.

Most other fuels are seeing price jumps this morning as well. The price of diesel is up by 2.4 cents, while home heating fuels have increased by 2.02 cents.

Propane is the only exception, with a slight decrease of 0.4 cent per litre.

Deadline for Master-Apprentice Program

Today is the last day to apply for the Master-Apprentice Inuttitut Program.

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism are offering their annual program that aims to teach one participant Inuttitut from Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

The time frame for this program will be from September 2020 to March 2021 with up to 20 hour per week.

If you are interested, write a letter stating why you are interested by 4pm today.

Coastal Community Freezer

OK Radio contacted the coastal community freezers to see what they have to offer.

In Nain, they have mattak, seal meat, porpoise meat and char.

In Hopedale, they have smoked char, smoked char fillets, mattak, bison meat, smelts and essential food.

In Postville, they have char and salmon.

In Makkovik, they only have char.

We will have the Rigolet’s Community Freezer once it becomes available.

Frozen Meat Donation

A Huge donation of frozen meat was donated to the Nain Community Freezer.

Susan Onalik is from Makkovik and is volunteering.

With the help from Edward Allen and many other people and organizations she was able to make this possible.

Onalik says the grand total of 53 boxes of frozen meat, 2368 pounds, over a ton of food getting sent to Nain community freezer.

27 boxes, 1219lbs are being sent up courtesy of PAL and Air Borealis.

26 boxes, 1149lbs still needing a generous donation of $4280.51 to get that sent up.

NG Seeking qualified boat builder

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking a qualified boat builder to construct two new, 28’ community search and rescue vessels for local communities.

The boat builder will construct the vessels based on the scope of work and required vessel specifications, install all equipment and completely outfit the vessels, keep a detailed construction log 4, work with Nunatsiavut Government project management team to ensure that the vessels are delivered on time and within budget as per the specifications.

Proposal submissions are due by 5pm (AST) on October 13th, 2020.

The successful bidder will be notified within two weeks of the proposal deadline.

The vessel construction is to be completed by March 31st, 2021.
