Language, Culture and Tourism are giving away free traditional items.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Coordinator for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says for the Master Apprentice Program, they have 1 Apprentice for Nain, Hopedale and Rigolet but needs one in Makkovik and Postville.

The Master in Hopedale will be teaching the apprentices in both Hopedale and Postville.

Jararuse says they are also promoting our language and culture by exposing children to cultural items.

They have children’s books and work books from the school curriculum for the communities along the coast.

They also have cultural items made by Joey Angnatok such as seal skin cleaning board, an ulu, and a seal skin frame, along with a Kamutik for the children to play with at daycare.

COVID-19 Update

Today (Tuesday, October 6), Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province has four active cases.

Two hundred and sixty-nine people have recovered from the virus.

To date, 44,738 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Polls in all communities for the Election of the President for Nunatsiavut will be open from 8am-8pm today.

Communities and locations as follows:

Postville – Postville Recreation Hall
Makkovik – Makkovik Hall of Youth
Rigolet – Strathcona Building
Happy Valley-Goose Bay & Mudlake – 174 C Hamilton River Road (Labradorian Printers building)
North West River – North West River Community Centre

Inuttitut Facebook Live Classes (Audio)

The Inuttitut Facebook Live classes concluded in September.

Sarah Townley is originally from Hebron and was the Instructor for the classes.

She says she had a lot of interest through Facebook and good feedback from both beneficiaries of Nunatsiavut and non-beneficiaries.

Townley adds that the Inuttitut Live classes were just for testing and will find out if they will continue again next year.

No IlinniaKatigennik

The OKâlaKatiget Society would like to inform our public that there will be no IlinniaKatigennik Radio Show until Tuesday, October 20th, 2020 due to voting day tomorrow, October 6, and Thanksgiving Day holiday on Monday, October 12th.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

In the meantime, anyone wanting to record any stories or sing Inuttitut songs is welcome to do so.

Trapline Marathon 2020

Trapline Marathon 2020 is going ahead virtually in Happy Valley-Goose Bay this year.

Shaun Maclean is the race director with the Trappers Running Club.

He says there is a total of 176 participants that are participating in the marathon.

The registration deadline closed last week, September 28th, with the marathon going on from Friday, October 9th to Monday, October 12th.

The age categories that can participate in the marathon are as follows: 12 years and under, 16 years and under, 20 to 29 years, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, and 50 to 59 years.

Participants have the option of running a full marathon, half a marathon, 10km run, 5km run, 5k run and other registrations with the fee of $30 each.

The participants can leave their house or go to a safe physical spot and run their course.

All pledges will be donating to the Special Olympics Team, the Howling Husky’s.

There are 6 participants in Makkovik, two participants in Nain and one participant in Rigolet in the Nunatsiavut region.

Participants can share their pictures onto their Facebook page.

One New Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Yesterday, Sunday, October 4, Newfoundland and Labrador had one new confirmed case of COVID-19.

The confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region between 60-69 years of age. This case is linked to the reported case on October 3.

The new case is travel-related. The individual arrived in Canada from Central Africa. The individual was asymptomatic during travel.

Public Health guidelines are being followed, and the woman is self-isolating. An investigation by Public Health is completed. Anyone considered a close contact is in quarantine and has been tested.

The province has four active cases of COVID-19.

269 people have recovered from the virus and to date, 44,121 people have been tested.

NG President Candidates, Johannes Lampe and Andrea Webb (Audio)

There are two candidates running for the Nunatsiavut Government presidential election, which is tomorrow, October 6th, 2020:

Incumbent President Johannes Lampe of Nain and Andrea Webb of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Take Back the Night Bags

The Nain Safe House will be handing out Take Back the Night bags beginning at 8 am on Friday, October 2nd.

The women of Nain will have priority from 8am to 12pm. After 12, if there are any bags left, the general public can pick up a bag. The bags can be picked up at the shelter at 9 AlakKatik Road.

Each bag will contain what is included in the photo, a ticket for 1 of 4 prizes, a bag of sweets (ALLERGY WARNING: PEANUT BUTTER USED), information and resources and much more.

The ticket numbers for the draw will be posted in the Nain Bulletin Board.

Nunatsiavut COVID-19 Support Programs

The Nunatsiavut Government released yesterday that the COVID-19 Support Programs are being suspended pending review.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement are advised that effective immediately, all Nunatsiavut Government COVID-19 emergency relief programs have been suspended with the exception of the provision of cleaning supplies within the Labrador Inuit settlement area.

The Nunatsiavut Government staff is currently re-evaluating all programs, with the goal of making improvements to ensure efficient and effective delivery of the future emergency relief initiatives to eligible beneficiaries.

Some of the existing programs may be either revamped or discontinued, while others may be developed.

An announcement on future programming is expected before the end of October, following the completion of the ongoing review.

The Nunatsiavut Government appreciated the understanding and patience of Beneficiaries as we strive to improve the enhance COVID-19 relief programs and initiatives.
