Net Making Workshop

There will be a Net Making Workshop held in Nain this month.

Susan Saksagiak is the Nain Community Shed Coordinator.

There are 2 spots available for one male and one female, and this is on a first come first serve basis.

This workshop is limited to two persons who must be committed to participate for the full week of programming and there will be supplies provided.

This will be a one-week program for persons interested in learning how to start and complete a fishing net.

Please note that this program will be offered from 8:30am to 12 noon and from 1-4pm starting on Tuesday June 22, 2021.

Coastal National Indigenous Peoples Day Activities

The OKâlaKatiget radio staff contacted the coastal communities on National Indigenous People’s Day activities.

The Department of Health and Social Development in Nain partnered up with the Language, Culture & Tourism Mental Wellness & Healing.

In Nain they have an online bingo event starting Monday, June 21 and runs until Friday, June 25. The deadline for this is on June 25, 4pm.

You are to post a picture of your bingo card on the Facebook event page or you can drop off your card at the Nain DHSD office or to the Nain Illusuak Building.

All household entries will be entered in a draw for each line completed on the card.

The prize draws for this bingo is $250 Northern Gift Card, $250 gift certificate for gas/stove oil, 3 large food boxes, and lots of merchandise draws.

Tyler Edmunds (Audio to be added later) Pt. 2

Nunatsiavut Assembly held their sitting in Hopedale on June 8th and the 9th.

Tyler Edmunds is the First Minister for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says there was also quite a few questions asked by members to the Ministers.

The next scheduled assembly sitting will be taking place on the 3rd week of September.

COVID-19 Update

Today (Thursday, June 17), Newfoundland and Labrador has one new confirmed case of COVID-19. Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

The one new confirmed case is a female in the Central Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous case. The case is not connected to the cluster in the Central Health region.

There are four new recoveries in the Western Health region and 1,340 people have recovered. There are two people in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 32 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 32 active cases is as follows:

• Eastern Health – 4
• Central Health – 10
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 1
• Western Health – 17

To date, 155,927 people have been tested.

Nain Family Resource Centre Little Camp

The Nain Family Resource Centre are excited to offer Little Camp for the summer once again.

Sandra Dicker is the Program Coordinator.

She says the first day of Little Camp will take place on Tuesday, July 6 at 9:30.

You can drop off your child ages 3-6, twice a week for 2 hours and this is free of cost.

It will be held every Tuesday and Thursday and will alternate each week between mornings from 9:30 to 11:30am, and the afternoons from 1 to 3 pm.

They are limited a maximum of 6 children as all other FRC programs.

Coastal School Year End

The coastal communities are soon finishing the school year next week.

In Nain, on the 23rd they will have sports day for just for the students, and on the 24th students will be dismissed at 12:30pm. There will be awards that day per grade level.

The town of Hopedale held their celebration for the kindergarten’s last week.

In Postville, their awards night is for students only on the last day of school.

Rigolet has no plans on the go due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In Makkovik, their school is holding a Grad for grades K-12 starting 10am, on the last day of school, this is closed to public.

Jennifer Price is the kindergarten teacher in Makkovik, she will have a grand walk with a graduation theme song playing for the 3 students in kindergarten. There will also be an outdoor picnic for the parents only, a table will be set for each family along with some cake, presentations, and photos.

The last day of school will be on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

Fuel Prices Move By Less Than a Cent This Week

There is not much change in fuel prices this week, with all prices moving by less than a cent each.

Gas is down by 0.4 cents per litre while all other fuel prices are up slightly.

Diesel and propane are up by 0.6 cents, while furnace and stove oils have increased by 0.5 cents per litre.

Kindergarten Family Visits Nain

The Jens Haven Primary School will be celebrating the Kindergarten Class of 2020-2021 this year.

Tomorrow, Friday, June 18, there will be family visits taking place from 6-7:30pm.

Paws will also be joining, and he is so excited.

If you see them visiting Kindergarten Graduates, please make some noise.

Just recently there was an assembly sitting that was held on June 8 and 9.

There was a lot of updates from ordinary members, AngijukKât and the ministers.

They have had quite a few questions in the assembly on updates from departments, the airstrip, the emergency repair program, TRHA, and more.

Today (Wednesday, June 16), Newfoundland and Labrador has one new confirmed case of COVID-19. Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

The one new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

There are seven new recoveries in the province, two in the Central Health region and five in the Western Health region and 1,336 people have recovered. There is no one in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 35 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 35 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 4
· Central Health – 9
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 1
· Western Health – 21

To date, 155,424 people have been tested.
