Influenza Update from May 6th, 2022 (Audio)

A lot of people have been getting sick from the flu for quite some time.

Megan Hudson is the Public Health Nurse for the Nain Department of Health and Social Development.

She says the influenza cases that we’re seeing right now are influenza that we would normally see in the Fall and Spring.

She adds that they will be offering COVID and flu vaccinations on May 11th from 10am to 12pm, 1pm to 5pm and 6pm to 8pm, and again on May 12th from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm.

Them Days Incorporated AGM

Them Days Incorporated will hold their Annual General Meeting in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The date is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 7pm.

There are quite a few items to have discussions on, due to the board of directors have not met for quite some time, due to COVID-19 is present in the community.

We will have more information on items to be discussed when it becomes available.

Nunatsiavut Partner Spotlight in the Arctic Arts Summit Digital Exhibition

The Nunatsiavut Government is calling on Labrador Inuit artists to submit works to be featured in the Nunatsiavut Partner Spotlight of the Arctic Arts Summit Digital Exhibition.

The Arctic Arts Summit is an arts exhibition that brings together representatives of the eight Arctic countries and the Indigenous Nations of the Circumpolar region to strengthen arts and culture in the North and stimulate collaboration in arts and creative industries throughout the region.

Leading up to the in-person event, taking place in Whitehorse, Yukon from June 27-29, 2022, there is seven months of digital programming, with Nunatsiavut’s weeklong partner Spotlight set to go live in June.

All mediums of art are eligible for inclusion in Nunatsiavut’s Partner Spotlight, with potential formats for submissions including photos, videos, artist projects, critical texts, research, editorial pieces, etc.

We welcome contributions from across the arts and culture sector; including practitioners, creators, collectives, presenters, administrators, institutions, academic, publishers, Nunatsiavut Government Officials, community organizations, and more.

With connection to the land as the overarching theme, content can touch on one or more of the following northern arts-focused sub-themes: Lands, Indigenous Sovereignty, Climate, Creating, Representation, Circumpolar Collaborations, Technology, Activism, and Possible Futures.

Selected artists may be asked to provide additional details including an artist bio, art captions or descriptions, and credits and permissions. Artists also may be asked to adjust the format of certain pieces for compatibility with the AAS online platform.

The deadline for submissions is May 12, 2022.

Mother’s Day Appreciation Up DHSD

There will be a Virtual Mother’s Appreciation on May 6th at 3pm.

You can nominate the mother who inspires you, it could be your mom, sister, grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law, foster mom, stepmom, friend, etc.

One submission per person, draw date will be may 6th at 3pm.

No submission will be accepted after 2:45.

Draw will be done by tickets, the prizes are a gift box, spruced up Labrador gift box, Singer heavy duty sewing machine.

Hopedale ICG Update (Audio)

Traveling from community to community by snowmobile will soon be too dangerous for residents along the coast.

Marjorie Flowers is the AngajukKâk for the Hopedale Inuit Community Government.

She says the trail markers between Bell and Drunken Harbor going South, and from Hopedale, Natuashish to the North has been removed.

Flowers adds that the Nanuk Centre is still closed due to the COVID-19 cases in the community.

Youth Center/Nigivik Update

The Youth Center here in Nain is open from 8pm to 8am for Afterschool programs.

During Friday afternoons, Ethan Angnatok will be at the Youth Center for cooking programs for youth ages 13 to 30.

From Tuesdays to Thursdays, the Nigivik Center will be open to all ages for cooking programs.

They will be making chicken soup today from 1:30pm to 4pm.

Anyone interested in joining can call the Nigivik Centre at 922-2968.

Youth Organizations Applications

The application for Grants to Youth Organizations is now open.

Through Budget 2022, the Provincial Government is investing more than $45,000 in the program which supports projects that:

– Encouraging skills, knowledge, and/or leadership development;
– Support youth in contributing to their community, region and/or Province;
– Enhance, promote and support partnerships, collaboration or inclusion;
– Build relationships and share experiences between generations and/or;
– Fill a gap in services.

First Light, Aboriginal Friendship Centre is presently recruiting Product Testers (in home) in most of Canadian to expand their private network of In-Home (IHUT) to fulfill upcoming contracts with multinational market research companies.

They guarantee 15-20 hours per work with an hourly pay between $25 an hour, and $45 per hour, depending on the -Home Usage Test Program.

Canadian Consumer Panels is a consulting firm that specializes in product testing and product development work. They design and conduct In-Home Usage Testing locally and nationally for actual user feedback to companies and market research firms to evaluate products, packaging, related product instructions and more.

During your application process they will determine your consumer profile and establish what products would be suitable for you to test according to your demographics, lifestyle, consumer behavior, skills, hobbies and ability.

NL Reports 5 More Deaths

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting 3 new deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic in the province since last Monday.

The number of hospitalizations has dropped 14 with 5 people in critical care.

There were 44 people new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the province yesterday and 140 today.

First Light Programs

First Light Aboriginal Centre in St. John’s is a non-profit organization that serves the Urban and Indigenous and non-Indigenous community alike by providing programs and services noted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration Indigenous, cultures and languages in the spirit, respect and friendship.

First Light is bringing back their 5 day after school program! This is just an application process; this is not final registration for the program. They will be prioritizing Indigenous families, First Light staff members children, anyone who has attended previous after school programs, their daycare after school program and their daily weekly programming for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to come together in both culture, and non-cultural activities. This program will focus on their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being through activities such as homework hour, crafts, drumming, outdoor time, book club, and more. They will be incorporating First Light mission into their program focusing on trust, respect, friendship among youth and staff.
