Labrador Marine Inc. operator of the marine service to Labrador’s north coast and Black Tickle, has announced further details of plans for the 2022 marine season.

The first trip is scheduled for June 12 with a 2pm departure of the Kamutik W from Goose Bay to ports north to Nain. Several changes will be implemented for the 2022 season.

The Goose Bay freight office will begin accepting freight on May 30, to maximize delivery of food and essential materials on the first trip of the season.

During the 2022 season, they will accept freight from Monday to Wednesday, 8am to 5pm, Thursdays from 8am to 7pm, Fridays from 8am to 5pm, and closed on Saturday and Sundays.

The Kamutik W will make bi-weekly trips to Black Tickle this summer, resulting in an eighth trip. LMI has accommodated this change without any reduction in service to the north coast.

LMI has avoided increasing cafeteria and vending machine prices for the past three seasons. However, the increase in prices from all suppliers leaves LMI no choice but to increase prices onboard.

They will not increase prices on nutritionally important foods such as fresh fruit, salads, yogurt, cheese, and other similar foods.

The caribou and musk ox meat are on weather hold in Goose Bay as we speak.

Liz Pijogge is the Northern Contaminants Researcher.

She says as soon as it arrives, the staff at the Nain Community Freezer will have to bag the meat and it will be delivered to each beneficiary household.

Please note that they will notify beneficiaries when they are ready for delivery.

Pijogge would also like to let beneficiaries know that you don’t have to go to the community freezer to pick up some meat as they will deliver.

The school year of 2021-2022 is close to an end and OK Radio contacted each school along the coast to see when they will have their proms.

All schools will have their last day on Thursday, June 23rd, 2022, and begin with the summer holidays.

Kent Chaulk is the principal for the Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain.

He says they already had their prom on May 7th, they will have their cap and gown sometime next month but there is no official date yet.

Steve Brazil is the Principal for the Northern Lights Academy in Rigolet.

He says that their prom will be on Saturday, May 28th. They have no theme, but they have a quote that says “Go Forth and Set the World on Fire” with the colors of black, gold, and purple.

Jennifer Winters is in charge of the graduation for the Amos Comenius Memorial School (ACMS) in Hopedale.

Their prom will be on Saturday, June 4th. The prom theme will be Hawaiian and will have the colors of purple, black and silver.

In Makkovik, the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School got four graduates graduating, their prom theme is “Starry Night”, which will be on Saturday, June 25th.

In Postville, the B.L. Morrison Memorial School have one graduate this year, they have no theme, but they will have their prom on Friday May 20th.

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking proposals from consultants to design and mange the construction of an addition and retrofits to the NG’s existing office building located at 37 Kaipokok Drive in the Inuit Community of Postville.

The building is used for office space, dental clinic, and accommodations.

The addition of a 2,500 square foot space is to consist of approximately eight (8) offices, a meeting room, and a new main entrance.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay – Woodward’s Oil today announced that the first oil tanker of the season will arrive in Goose-Bay, today Monday, May 16th.

The Tuvaq W will be escorting into the port of Goose-Bay by the CCGS George R. Pearkes.

Please note that the tanker is carrying Jet Fuel ONLY.

Diesel and regular gasoline is expected to arrive early in June.

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe on behalf of Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, extended his heart-felt condolences to the family and friends of former Nunatsiavut President and Minister, Jim Lyall, who passed away on May the 13th in the morning.

Born in Nutak in northern Labrador in 1945, Jim and his family were forced to move, against their will, south of Nain when he was 11 years old, as part of the provincial government’s resettlement program.

From 1977 to 1981, Mr. Lyall was employed as Executive Director of the Labrador Inuit Association, before assuming the role as Postmaster for Canada Post in Nain – a position he held for seven years.

In May of 2017, Mr. Lyall was acclaimed as an Ordinary Member for the Constituency of Nain when no other candidates came forward to run in a byelection after the seat had been vacated. He was elected to the position a year later and served as Minister of Language, Culture and Tourism until his passing.

Mr. Lyall passed away just hours after his wife, Jean, at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

“I know there are no words that will take away the sorrow and pain that the family is going through during this difficult time,” says President Lampe. “Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Cain’s Quest is delighted to announce that 2023 racer registration will be opening on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 10am. Teams can submit registration online at www.cainsquest.com. The registration process will run differently for this event as payments will be processed by telephone and must be made via credit card (Mastercard, Visa, American Express) or Debit Mastercard or Debit Visa.

Although expenses increase from race to race for Cain’s Quest, the Board of Directors have opted to keep racer registration the same of 2023 at $3,500 per racer plus tax. Team registration fees to towards the cost of racer meals and accommodation as they race along the route, racer insurance, racer kit bags, the prize purse, safety, and operational expenses that may not be covered through sponsorship or government support.

After the postponed 2022 race, organizers are thrilled to be able to get the ball rolling on Cain’s Quests 2023.

Cain’s Quest 2023 will start and finish in Labrador City, NL. The proposed race route will take teams through 18 checkpoints and 13 communities across Labrador.

Cain’s Quest Inc. will be accepting a maximum of 50 teams for 2023 and hopes to fill the roster in record time beating out the 2020 registration which reached max capacity in 18 days.

The Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative Society Limited held their first community meeting in Hopedale yesterday.

Two delegates will be elected from each community to attend the Annual General Meeting.

According to their schedule, their next meeting will be in Rigolet today, Tuesday, May 10 at the town hall starting at 7pm.

Their next meeting will be in Makkovik tomorrow, Wednesday, May 11, at the town hall at 7pm.

The next community meeting will be on Thursday, May 12 in Postville at the Kaipokok Community Centre at 7pm.

The Annual General Meeting will be held in Nain on May 25, starting at 7pm in the boardroom of the Nunatsiavut Government building.
