No Leaf River Caribou in Labrador

The Department of Lands and Natural Resources wishes to advise Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement that, despite reports to the contrary, there are no Leaf River caribou in Labrador.

The Nunatsiavut Government receives collar data on the George River Caribou Herd (GRCH) on a weekly basis from the Government of Newfoundland.

Similar data received from the Government of Quebec suggests Leaf River caribou came within 300 kilometres of the range of the GRCH and at no time entered Labrador.

As recent as last week, George River caribou were harvested near Mistassin Lake some 23 days after being collared by the Quebec Government near Lac Brisson.

Despite what is been suggested by individuals that continue to harvest, this was not Leaf River caribou.

It was George River caribou.
