Max Winters Memorial Hockey Tournament Facing Off Soon

The community of Makkovik will be hosting their first ice hockey tournament on Saturday, February 17th. The tournament will be in honour of Max Winters – a well known Inuit elder born in Makkovik.

He was an active volunteer who showed tremendous dedication and support to sports in Labrador.

The Max Winters Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament will be a co-ed, just for fun, tournament for ages 15 and up.

Teams will consist of 9 players – 1 goalie, 4 men, 2 old timers 40 plus, and 2 women. No additional players will be permitted. Teams will play 4 on 4.

Cost of registration will be $200 per team or $25 per player – goalies play for free. Half of the take-in will go towards the Arena Fundraising Committee, and the other half goes towards Makkovik Minor Hockey.

Register your teams, your team name, and jersey colour to Jermaine Manning by Thursday, February 15th. Any questions or concerns can also be directed to Jermaine at 923-2221, or 923-2273.

The schedule will be advertised on Friday. The length of the games is yet to be determined, once they know how many teams will be registered. So far there are 3 teams registered.

Awards will be given to the top team, top goalie, top player of the tournament- male and female- and most sportsmanlike male and female.

Arena staff will be working together with the arena fundraising committee and local volunteers to make this event possible.

Meanwhile, the Billy Quak tournament in Makkovik that was scheduled to take place last weekend was postponed. This year, the tournament was scheduled to be a ball hockey tournament in the gym. John Andersen is the contact person for the Billy Quak tournament, and he says that the date for the tournament is yet to be determined, but he is currently looking at sometime in April.
