NGC supports peaceful protest at Muskrat Falls

(Happy Valley-Goose Bay)—Chris Webb, President and CEO of the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) commented today on the ongoing protest involving Muskrat Falls and Universal Helicopters’ requirement to fly workers to the construction site from Goose Bay.

“NGC is supportive of the peaceful and legal protest concerning the impact of methylmercury on people’s health,” Webb said. “We feel the right solution is to completely clear the reservoir of soil and vegetation.”

NGC also commented on Universal Helicopters’ requirement to fly workers to the construction site. “Universal Helicopters has been under contract to fly Nalcor since July 2010,” said Webb. “Under that contract, Universal and Canadian Helicopters share flying time. In this situation, Canadian Helicopters was asked by Nalcor to fly workers to the site, but all of their helicopters were deployed. Canadian Helicopters then asked Universal Helicopters to fly the workers pursuant to the requirements of the contract.”

“NGC supports Universal and it’s Board of Directors in it’s decision to continue to fulfill the terms of the contract with Nalcor,” says Webb. “A refusal to honor the contract would expose Universal to potential legal action and would act as a strong deterrent to the company pursuing other ventures for the long-term benefit of Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries.”

NGC is hopeful a solution that works for everyone involved will happen quickly.
