Year End Review for March 2019

Here are the Year End review stories for the month of March 2019.

The 17th Annual Bernard and Jeffery Memorial hockey was held on March 1st, 2019.

On Sunday, March 3rd, the Happy Valley-Goose Bay mini mall was engulfed in flames.

On March 5th, the Nunatsiavut Assembly voted to remove the Ordinary member for Hopedale, Rachel Saunders from office for refusing to adhere to penalties imposed on her for several breaches of the Nunatsiavut Code of Conduct Act.

The Nunatsiavut Government released the 2019-2020 budget on March 6th, during the sitting at the Nunatsiavut House of Assembly in Hopedale.

Of the $112 million, $450,000 budgeted for 2019-2020 fiscal year, which begins April 1st, a total of $58 million is received under the Fiscal Financing Agreement (FFA) which negotiated between the Nunatsiavut Government and the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador.

On March 7th, 2019, the very first annual Illuvigak building workshops was held in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet this year.

And the 14th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey tournament was held in Postville on March 8th and 9th, 2019.

Staff from the Environment climate change Canadian wildlife service’s held Caribou meetings on the north coast communities started from March 11th.

They held Caribou Consultation Meetings in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet Postville, North West River, Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.

On March 8th the Tradition and Transition were in Partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government and Memorial University would like to get community input about their research on the Survivors of the Okak Flu of 1918 and 1919.

They hired on Patty Way who is the Genealogist Researcher who has gathered information about the Okak Family Tree.

Her research is about survivors, who they are, or what became of them, and information about the descendants of the survivors today.

She says there were only 59 survivors of the Okak Spanish Flu.

And out of the 59 survivors, 19 were male and 40 were female.

March 7th marked the fourth annual Nain Wing Bee.

Regina Wells is the Environmental Protection Officer with Environmental Services Based in HVGB and Carla Pamak the Inuit Research Advisory with Nunatsiavut Government.

They held an open house, and this Wing Bee was a way to help gather data on Migratory birds that are harvested in Nunatsiavut.

The 26th Annual Makkovik Jamboree was held on Friday, March 15th.

There were performers such as John Mitchell, Bud Mitchell, Cathy Lane, Brandon Pardy, Sam and Joan Dicker and other singers from Makkovik as well.

On March 7th, the legendary singer-songwriter Charlie Panigoniak passed away.

The minimum wage increased in Newfoundland and Labrador on April 1st, 2019, to $11.40 an hour.

On March 19th, the Tourism Nunatsiavut hosted a photo exhibition to showcase photographs done by Inuit during the Nunatsiavut Artistry.

This is a great way to showcase their photos, and the photographers will be Rita Ann Dicker from Nain, Samantha Jacque from Makkovik, Ryan Winters from Hopedale, Holly Andersen from Makkovik, Jillian Larkham from Makkovik and Inez Shiwak from Rigolet.

The Nunatsiavut Government Interpreter/Translator team hosted an Inuktitut Terminology Workshop in Nain, from March 19th-21st, 2019.

On March 30th the 39th Annual Heritage Dog team race held in Makkovik.

Five teams registered from Makkovik and Hopedale.
