Summer Literacy Camps

Summer Literacy Camps (SLCs) have been offered in Nunatsiavut since 2016 when it first started in Nain, and it is free for all kids.

Jodie Lane is the Education Manager of the Department of Education and Economic Development in Makkovik.

She says the Summer Literacy Camp is delivered by the Frontier College of Toronto.

It will be for kids ages 5-12, and will be located in the Nain Primary School, Hopedale, Makkovik, and Rigolet local schools.

The camp will run from Monday-Friday from 9AM -3PM starting on July 8-26, along with snacks in the morning and afternoon.

There will be counsellors from the south as well as local people hired as councillors in each community.

Activities will be focused on reading, writing, arts and crafts, music, science, environment, culture, math, and community connections.

It is meant to help cut down on summer literacy loss (which is simply the loss of literacy skills kids go through by not being exposed to as much literacy activities on a daily basis like they receive in school).

Lane would like to add that the registration forms will be going home with students soon.
