Spruce Meadows Farm (Audio)

The Spruce Meadows Farms is located in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

We spoke with the owner of the farm, Tom Angiers.

He says Spruce Meadow Farms provides fresh vegetables year-round.

As a supplier with Nutrition North, they offer subsidized freight to Northern communities, further reducing food prices for these communities without sacrificing the quality of the produce.

He says they that if you are living on the north coast communities and would like the best quality of fresh produce, or any frozen meats shipped to you, Spruce Meadows Farm is the best place to order.

Angier’s says they own and harvest their own vegetables year-round in their greenhouse.

The ice conditions on the North Coast are starting to freeze over with the cold temperatures.

We spoke with Rex Holwell Jr., the Manager for Nunatsiavut Operations with SmartICE.

He says the ice conditions are now approximately a foot and seven inches.

They had snowmobile issues during the trip so they didn’t go as far as they planned.

We also spoke with Ian Winters who is the Conservation Officer for Hopedale.

Winters says the ice conditions seems to be more rougher after the storm.

He adds that people are still traveling up north, but no one is traveling down to Postville or Makkovik yet due to ice conditions.

In Postville, we spoke with Samantha Jacque who is the Conservation Officer.

kinatuinamut Ilingajuk (Audio)

The kinatuinamut Ilingajuk magazine holds interesting stories within Labrador.

For example, there was a story about the Land Claims Opening that was held in Nain in 1988.

About 300 people from the north coast communities, St. John’s and Ottawa gathered at the Jens Haven Memorial School gym to witness this historical event.

Nain’s chief elder back then, Jerry Sillitt did an opening prayer, followed by a hymn sung by the Moravian Coastal Choir.
