The National Liaison is the lead in implementing the core goals of the MMIWG Secretariat. Activities including contracts, partnership development and management, resource material production, application for research licenses and ethics approval, and all aspects of project delivery, monitoring and evaluation using in Inuit specific GBA and framework.

Inquiry into Innu Children in Foster care

The review of how Innu children have been treated while in the province’s care begins today in Labrador.

The Inquiry into the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System was first announced 6 years ago by then Dwight Ball.

Public hearings will take place this week at the Mary May Healing Centre in Sheshatshiu, it began this morning with traditional drumming and singing, followed by opening statements.

The first week will be live-streamed through the inquiry website, while subsequent community sittings will be recorded and made available after the fact.

The deaths of six Innu children are scheduled to be looked at in June, but already lawyers say that could be delayed due to scheduling issues.

The final report is due in October, but inquiry lawyers say they’ve already asked the government for an extension.

The hearings will be overseen by three commissioners, including retired Provincial Court Judge James Igloliorte, former MUN school of social work professor Mike Devine, and former Innu Nation Grand Chief Anastasia Qupee.

Income Tax Season

It’s that time of the year again – income tax season.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency website, the 2022 return must be filed on or before April 30, 2023, and over payments are due April 30, 2023.

File your income tax return early or before the due date to avoid being charged interest and penalties, and to prevent a disruption to your benefit and credit payments, such as:

• GST/HST credit, including any related provincial or territorial credits.
• Canada Child Benefit (CCB), including related provincial or territorial payments.
• Old age security (OAS) benefits and Self-employed persons.

If you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on a business in 2022 with business expenditures relating mostly to a tax shelter investment, your 2022 return must be filed by April 30, 2023.

Other than those relating mostly to a tax shelter investment, your 2022 return must be filed by June 15, 2023. However, if you have a balance owing for 2022, you must pay it on or before April 30, 2023.

First Mark Dicker Ice Hockey Memorial Tournament

The First Annual Mark Dicker Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament took place last weekend.

We spoke with Sherry Dicker-Lidd, the mother of Late Mark Dicker and one of the organizers for the tournament.

The tournament was held from Thursday, February 2nd to February 5th of this year at the Nain Huskey Center.

Due to the high interest, all divisions couldn’t fit into one weekend schedule, so the organizers put the 12 and Under-age division play a day earlier.

For the 12 and Under division, Quinten’s team won against Buddy’s team. Team Gracie won against Nunatsiavut Annait for the Female Division.

On February 3rd and 4th, Team Justice League, Team Avengers, Team Redcats, Team Warriors, and Team NGC played together in six games, leading on to the first semifinals and the championship games on Sunday, February 5th.

On Sunday, the first semifinals were Team Warriors vs. Team Avengers, with the Warriors winning 13-3. The second semifinals were Justice League against the Redcats, with the Justice League taking the win of 8-6.

Team Redcats and Team Avengers played for the bronze medal game, with the Redcats take the win of 14-6. The championship game was played by Team Warriors vs. Team Justice League, and the Team Warriors being the champions with 2-1.

The awards ceremony hasn’t taken place yet but will be held once they get the trophy package in the mail.

She adds that they were winging the first tournament, and that there will be rules set for the next tournament.

Dicker-Lidd would like to thank everyone that was helping them in their late son’s tournament in anyway, especially to the referees, the recreation staff and everyone who came to watch, and hopes to see you all next year for the 2nd annual tournament.

Cain’s Quest Update (Audio)

Cain’s Quest is returning to Labrador’s Tundra for the 3,000-mile Snowmobile Endurance Race.

Chris Lacy is the Chair of the Cain Quests Board.

He says a total of 35 teams are registered and scheduled to be on the starting line on Saturday, March 4.

He says organizers are still looking for some volunteers to help the race run.

ITK Housing Strategy Implementation Plan

Inuit Tapiriit kanatami says the Inuit Nunangat Housing Strategy Implementation Plan was recently endospore by ITK’s Board of Director’s co-developed by Inuit and the Government of Canada through the Inuit Crown Partnership Committee.

It continues to roadmap for achieving better, more renovative, and self-determined outcome along the entire housing continuum within Inuit Nunangat from emergency shelters to affordable rentals and market home ownership.

ITk also joined Patty Hajdu, Marc Miller and Karina Gould, as well as Provincial and Territorial partners, and leaderships from Metis National Council and Assembly of First Nation.

The gathering was held yesterday morning for an important consversation about child and family services and clean drinking water.

The Labrador Winter Games is a month away and the coordinators in Nain, Hopedale Makkovik and Rigolet are busy with practices and fundraising.

Kelly Edmunds is the Coordinator for Team Nain.

She says they have a new member on the team that will be competing in the duathlon at the games. Team Nain is still making it work with drills and practices at the school and the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center letting the public play with them sometimes.

Edmunds adds they have reached their budget goal and the team are grateful for those who helped, donated, and sponsored. Now Team Nain gets to focus more on practices.

For Team Makkovik, Gemma Andersen is the Coordinator.

She says practices are the same but the team are practicing indoor sports two or three times a week instead of one.

For fundraising, so far, they held bingo for the public.

Team members are selling tickets for a meal from Mary Brown’s with the ticket draw at 4pm today, they are also selling tickets for a drum of oil.

Andersen adds that there will be a bake sale next weekend.

For Team Hopedale, Susan Nochasak is the Coordinator.

She says the team are practicing three times a week at the Nanuk Community Centre following their own schedule.

She is grateful for the support from the community and the council for assisting in helping Team Hopedale get ready for the games.

With fundraising, they held a few events such as a mini fair, mini dart tournament, food sales, and ticket draws.

Nochasak would like to thank the kamatsiatet committee, who is their biggest sponsor and the team are very grateful for the support.

Tony Wolfrey is the Coordinator for Team Rigolet

Wolfrey said the team is almost full.

They will have another tryout for females to play in the Northern Games.

Team Rigolet is also doing the same practices.

Wolfrey says fundraising are doing good, they are selling tickets for a valentine’s basket, donations have been given to them as well.

Once they have the Valentine’s basket done, their fundraising should be complete.

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking proposals from qualified consultants to provide concept, design and project management services for the installation of outdoor play area equipment at two existing childcare centres in Hopedale and Nain.

Applications for Home Repair Program 2023

The Nunatsiavut Housing Commission is now accepting applications for the 2023 Home Repair Program.

It is available to all Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement residing in the Inuit Communities of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik, and Rigolet, regardless of household income.

Repairs will be cost-shared with the NHC to a percentage set depending on household income brackets.

Applications must be submitted to the Nunatsiavut Housing Commission by 4:30pm tomorrow Friday, February 10, 2023.

NL Report Cases

N&L will end it’s COVID-19 restrictions, including masks and vaccination requirements and gathering restrictions affecting March 14 this year. Dr. Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald told reporters on Tuesday, February 7, that high vaccination rates have helped phase out what remains of public health measures.

As of phased approach, she said that starting Tuesday, February 28, informal gatherings will be limited to 25 people while retail stores will have no capacity restrictions.

Restaurants, gyms, dances studios can have 75% occupancy, while religious ceremonies are same with 75% in places where the vaccination card is used and 50% in places where the card is not needed.

Fitzgerald also said sports teams can travel to compete outside their region, but are only allowed to play one game per day, and that in a second phase, starting Tuesday, February 28, all border controls and travel restrictions will be lifted while rapid testing will become volunteer.

From Tuesday, March 14, capacity and gathering restrictions will be lifted, it will no longer be and it will no longer be necessary to wear a mask or show proof of vaccination to enter public places.

Fitzgerald added that masking is still strongly recommended after March 14. She described the announcement changes as “not the end, but the beginning of the end. COVID-19 will always be with us for a long time, maybe in seasonal waves, maybe not. As a society, we must learn to live with the virus and be prepared to adapt.”

Health Authorities reported on Wednesday, February 8, that 179 new cases of the coronavirus and said 16 people were hospitalized and 6 people were hospitalized and 6 people in critical care.

Three more COVID-19 deaths was also reported, bringing the total amount of deaths to 60.
