MP Jones at Opening Ceremony

Member of Parliament (MP) for Labrador said it was overwhelming to see the support during the opening ceremonies of the 40th Labrador Winter Games.

She said that support helping her treatment in St. John’s, Jones was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time in October 2022.

40 years after attending her first LWG as an athlete, Jones was once again at the opening ceremonies last Sunday night.

But, this time, the Labrador MP honored with flowers and a standing ovation from the crowd amid her battle with breast cancer.

“She’s a fighter,” Sheshatshiu Innu Nation Chief, Eugene Hart told the crowded arena.

The standing ovation from the arena with an estimated 1,300 athletes volunteer and spectators was “pretty overwhelming, but it was energizing for me as well,” Jones told CBC Monday night.

“The fact that they’ve supported me in this battle with breast cancer and they’ve continued to hold me up with their prayers, hold me up to their energy, like they did last night in the arena is going to help me beat this and get to the end with it,” Jones said, “and for that I’m forever thankful.”

She had beaten cancer 12 years ago, but it returned in October, she said in November.

“I’m am heading back to St. John’s to continue my medical treatment .. and I really appreciate the energy and support and the prayers that people of Labrador and the people in NF have given me, she added.

As a 14-year-old in 1983, it was an experience for her coming from the village of Mary’s Harbor in a Twin Otter to a large town in HV-GB, that had a swimming pool and theater.

“You did not have that interaction with sports meets and communities to commute back and forth, and added Labrathon was her favorite sport, it starts on March 18 this year.

2023 Labrathon Canceled

In consultation with all community coordinators, the 2023 Labrador Winter Games Board of Directors has unanimously voted to cancel the Labrathon.

Based on the recommendation of the Committee Chair, who states that due to unprecedented weather conditions, it is not possible to safely conduct the Labrathon within the regulations outlined in the technical package.

The Board of Directors agreed with the community coordinators that a modification to the Labrathon could provide an unfair advantage/disadvantage to the athletes and communities, whom have not been provided with a modified technical package in advance of the event.

COVID Update from VOCM news

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting 7 new deaths and 19 new hospitalizations due to COVID-19.

The current numbers being reported are for the period of February 26 to March 11; of those in hospital, 4 are in critical care.

The highest number in confirmed cases reported on a given day was 26, while the lowest was 5.

This comes as the province marks a significant milestone in life with COVID.

It was March 14, 2020, 3 years ago that Public Health announced its first presumptive positive case, which was detected in a patient that had recently returned from a Caribbean trip.

The number of Lab confirmed cases of influenza in Newfoundland and Labrador bottomed out the end of February.

The provincial government’s weekly influenza report shows no-new Lab confirmed cases of the flu in the 4 weeks leading up to February 25.

Much of what was seen in Australia over the summer, Newfoundland and Labrador saw an early peak in flu cases followed by a steep drop.

Up to Feb 25, there had been a total of 906 Lab confirmed flu cases reported in the province so far this flu season, with 29 deaths, 225 hospitalized, and 28 ICU admissions.

More than half the cases were in people aged 45 and under. Meanwhile, other respiratory illnesses are continuing to circulate in community, including RSV, entero and rhinovirus and adenovirus.
