NG Extends Condolences

On behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government and Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, President Johannes Lampe extends his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Don Dicker Sr. who passed away in Nain on Sunday after losing his battle with cancer.

Mr. Dicker was the former registrar of Nunatsiavut Government, a long-time employee of the Labrador Inuit Association, and was part of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims negotiations. He also held a board position on the Nunatsiavut Housing Commission, was appointed to the Nain Membership Committee, and sat on the Tradition & Transition Project Management Committee.

“Mr. Dicker was a strong advocate for Nunatsiavut and our people,” said President Lampe. “He was dedicated to the project of self-government, especially where housing for Inuit was concerned. We are grateful to Mr. Dicker for his work in enhancing the life of Nunatsiavummiut.”

Torngat Fisheries Update (Audio)

Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative has scheduled the upcoming meetings for next month.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says the community meetings will be held in each of the five North Coast Communities in Rigolet, Hopedale, Nain, Makkovik and Postville.

Watts added the Annual General Meeting will be held in Postville this year.

NG Education Division Photography Contest

The Nunatsiavut Government Education Division is holding a photography contest for all beneficiaries aged 18 and older.

Photos must include cultural subject, title of entry, your name and your community when submitting.

Winning photos will be used in future publications from the education division and winners will receive a $150 prize.

The NG Education Division is also holding an art contest, which is open to Kindergarten to grade 12 students in Nunatsiavut and all across Canada.

Entries must include a limit of 4 colors, a picture of a student, a career, or an occupation sketched, painted or graphic designed by the student, a title of their entry, name, age, and school attending.

The prize will be $150 for winning artwork, and the deadline for entries is April 21, 2023.

Makkovik Easter Photo Scavenger Hunt

There will be an Easter Photo Scavenger Hunt in Makkovik on Saturday, April 8, between 9am and 5pm, hosted by the Makkovik Recreation.

This event will be for all ages with 2 individuals per team, with a chance to win cash prize of $100, and free to enter.

There will be a total of ten checkpoints, and the first checkpoint will be at the Makkovik Airport.

You must take a photo of each check point and read the clue provided to find the next checkpoint. Once you’ve found all ten checkpoints, and have taken a photo of each checkpoint, you are done.

Keep an eye out for a bonus at some checkpoints to complete a video to get your name put in twice for the cash prize draw.

You can submit your ten photos and the bonus video (if completed) by Facebook messenger to Doreen N Winters or by email to doreenglenn@hotmail.com, and make sure to name the two people on your team.

Photos are to be submitted by 9pm on the day of the scavenger hunt.

Please note that the winner will be announced on Facebook, and cash prize can be picked up at the Town Office, or be emailed to you.

Bookkeeping and Quickbooks Training Opportunity

In collaboration with the College of the North Atlantic, The Nunatsiavut Economic Development Division are pleased to offer registered Inuit businesses a 5-day Level 1 training opportunity focusing on a combination of Basic Bookkeeping & Quickbooks training.

There will be a maximum of 12 participants, and training will be delivered from April 24-28, and delivered through a face-to-face delivery model in the community of Nain at the Illusuak Theatre.

Nain Church Members Meeting

The Nain Moravian Church Members had a meeting yesterday.

During the meeting, Simon Kohlmeister told the members that he is stepping down from his position as Leader for the Nain Church.

Kohlmeister also urges the members and the men and women chapel servants to help each other and keep the tradition going.

Other issues talked about was that the members will have to elect someone to take on that position.

He also said that Nancy Winters of Nain is now the new Nain Moravian Treasurer.

LFC Soon to Open (Audio)

The Labrador Friendship is soon to open in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Jennifer Helfer-Elson is the Excutive Director.

She says the hostel and diner will re-open on Monday, April 17.

Elson says it will used only for people who have to go to their medical appointments.

She added the bedrooms each have a washroom and furniture.

Breanna Bishop Interview (Audio)

There were free travel map booklets to giveaway to the public at the NG boardroom for Nain residents.

We spoke with Breanna Bishop who is a PhD student with Dalhousie University.

The travel booklets contain information about the ocean currents, sea ice, rattles, unsafe ice and how they changed over the years.

2023 Ice Watch Contest

The 2023 Ice Watch has begun!

Join the 2023 Ice Watch Challenge and make ice observation posts with the SIKU app and you could win a skidoo from Contant.

Using the SIKU app to make ice observations and dangerous ice posts is an easy way to share knowledge by including photos, video, and tagging Inuktut sea ice terminology.

The contents of Your posts will also contribute to the SIKU Ice Map and other ice safety initiatives in your community.

Every week until July 2nd, one SIKU Ice Post will be selected as the winner and its creator will receive a $100 gift card from the Northern Store.

At the end of the challenge, finalists will be selected based on their excellent contributions to Indigenous Knowledge of ice.

JHMS Easter Carnival Events

This week, the 4-12 Jens Haven Memorial school is kicking off their Spring Carnival events.

Here is the schedule:

Tomorrow Tuesday, April 4th is Sportswear Day; where students can represent their favourite sports team with a team jersey, hat, shirt, mitts, etc., or come up with your own sports team logo.

Wednesday, April 5th is Labrador Day; where students can wear traditional clothing to school or dress up in the Labrador Flag Colors. House League Events will commence throughout the day.

The last day of school will be on Thursday, April 6th, and will have an Easter Sendoff; students will participate in homeroom challenges, relay races, and carnival games to earn points for their House League Team, and student must wear their House League colour to support their team.

Easter holidays will be starting on Good Friday, April 7, and classes will resume on Monday, April 17.
