Hopedale ICG Update

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government are quite busy running operations in their department, even though they are short staffed.

We spoke with Marjorie Flowers the AngajukKâk for the HICG.

She says due to staff shortages they are currently asking Hopedale residents to be patient with them for programs.

Flowers says they will be doing interviews in the next couple of weeks for the Town Clerk Position.

She says the construction projects that was not completed from last year, will be completed this summer, by Budgells Equipment.

The Budgells crew are currently finishing off the distribution project, and right now they are doing the mechanical and electrical inside the building.

She adds they have a Tender out for their Municipal Garage.

They will not have any staff working at the Nanuk Center after June 6, 2023.

Flowers says they are waiting to hear back about funding for the summer student positions.

Federal Fuel Tax

On July 1st, 2023 the prices at the pumps are expected to rise.

With an increase to the carbon tax as well as the introduction of a second carbon tax fee on gasoline and diesel.

The Atlantic Premiers are calling for a delay, and left with the financial impact of another fuel tax that will have on residents and the cost of importing goods.

Hopedale Amaguk Inn Celebrates 25 Years (Audio)

A big celebration took place in the Hopedale in May.

Thursday, May 18, 2023, marked 25 years of business for the Amaguk Hotel.

We spoke with Patty Dicker, the owner of the Amaguk Hotel.

Dicker says she opened the doors to the Amaguk Inn on May 18th, 1998.

The Amaguk Inn opened with 12 rooms, a restaurant and lounge.

Since then, she expanded to 18 rooms and then further to 22 rooms.

She has added a sunroom on to the restaurant and renovated all rooms.

2023 NGC Scholarships Available

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies are now accepting applications for their 2023 NGC Scholarship.

The deadline for applications is Monday July 31, 2023, at 11:59pm.

NGC will be traveling to Nain, Postville, and Makkovik this week, to hold their community open house.

They will be holding their first community open house in Nain on June 1, 2023, then in Postville on June 6, and in Makkovik on June 7, 2023.

Pan Labrador Choir

The Pan Labrador Choir will be held in Hopedale this week.

They are holding this concert at the Hopedale Amos Comenius School this Friday June 2, 2023.

This year they have students from 4 schools to attend this year’s Pan Labrador Concert.

Kellie Walsh is the Artistic Director, and the accompanist is Anna Mercer.

They have special guests attending: Salome Jararuse and the Ullugigatsuk Choir graduates from 2021/2022.

During the concert they will be holding door prizes.

This is the first time since 2020 Director Kellie Walsh, the Ullugigatsuk Choir and students from 4 Nunatsiavut communities will be joined together for this memorable performance.

Elders Social (Audio)

The Department of Language and Culture and Tourism set up a Tupik (tent) by the Illusuak Center this passed Monday.

The Elders social gathering was held that afternoon.

Elders were inside the tent telling stories about being off on the land and childhood memories.

We had the opportunity to hear some stories during the Elders social.

Maria E Merkuratsuk was making some kuvigait and panitsiaks in the tent.

ITk News

Inuit Tapariit kanatami held their annual celebration. Their country foods harvested in Inuit Nunangat and it returned for the first time since 2019.

ITk has announced it will host its celebration of it’s Arctic country food and culture at the National Arts Centre on the evening of next Monday, June 5.

Formerly known as the taste of the Arctic, Tapariit meaning “united” in Inuktitut, will showcase country foods like Arctic char, goose, mattak and caribou in a reception-style dinner highlighting the 4 distinct regions of Inuit Nunangat.

The dishes will be prepared by chef Sheila Flaherty who is from Iqaluit, and National Arts Centre chef Kento Leier.

The evening will focus speakers and performances Arctic Ciqiniq, Terry Ujarak, Nancy Mike, Geronimo Itutiq and Deantha Edmunds.

“Getting ready to share country food is a big part of our culture, and I look forward to seeing friends, and making new ones as we gather to share in the bounty of Inuit Nunangat,” said ITk President Natan Obed.

Request for Proposals Aggregate Resources & Quarry Strategy

Nunatsiavut Government (NG) is currently undertaking Pingutitsinik Nunatsiavut: Create Nunatsiavut Infrastructure Strategy which will guide decision-making and long-term investment to bridge the infrastructure gap in Nunatsiavut.

This project will support analysis within the larger infrastructure strategy and identify lands and costs required for future quarry development.

Proposals are to be received no longer than 4:00p.m June 19th, 2023.

To be considered, electronic copies of Proposals should be submitted through the Project MERX solicitation advertisement and/or sent to Colin Gilbride-Director of Infrastructure at colin.gilbride@nunatsiavut.com (cc infra.ngprocurement@nunatsiavut.com) with the subject line proposals submittal: aggregate resources & quarry strategy.

The lowest-cost or any proposals may not necessarily be accepted and the Nunatsiavut Government reserves the right to cancel this RFP. Proposals will be evaluated on the principles of value for money, which include an evaluated of the Inuit Content Factor pursuant to the Procurement act.

The Nain Wind-Grid Project

The Nain Wind Micro-Grid Project is a proposed 1-2 turbine (2.3-4.6 megawatt (MW)) wind power project with a battery storage system and micro-grid controller to integrate with the existing diesel system in Nain.

The proposed location of the wind turbines is approximately 2.5 km from the center of Nain.

It is the first project of this scale within Nunatsiavut, and it is expected that it will serve as a pilot project for renewable energy development in the region.

This project will help reduce the amount of diesel fuel consumed at the NL Hydro power plant in Nain.

It is anticipated that the construction will begin in June 2024, with commercial operation in 2025.

Janeway Telethon

The Janeway officially launched its Telethon Fundraising season with an event at Peacock Primary in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

It’s the first time the annual fundraiser has been launched in Labrador, and Telethon manager, Ruth Squires says they couldn’t be more excited!

The annual telethon raises money for important equipment for the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s which serves the entire province.

The 39 th annual Janeway Children’s Miracle Network will broadcast on NTV on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4.

This year’s goal is 2.5 million dollars to purchase highly specialized pieces of surgical and diagnostic imaging equipment.
