June is National Indigenous History Month across Canada – a time to honour our peoples resilience, achievements and stories which have helped shape this country.

Nunatsiavimmiut have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our vast and rich history. We are one of the founding peoples of Canada; descendants of the prehistoric Thule Hunters who were drawn to Labrador, because of the region’s abundance of whales and other wildlife.

We are the most southernmost Inuit homeland, the First Inuit of Canada to achieve self-government. Through our various departments, we continue to make strides in restoring our language online classes, school and daycare curriculum and everyday conversations.

We continue to showcase and promote our culture and heritage through initiatives like the Torngat Mountains Base Camp Youth Leadership Program, the Tupik Pilot Project, annual language and culture camps, Youth and Elder gatherings, just to name a few. And we are always eager to share the beauty of our land and natural resources to many visitors to our communities each year.

We should be proud of how far we, as Labrador Inuit, have come and who we are today, as we help shape the future for the generations ahead.

Message from Nunatsiavut Government President, Johannes Lampe.

Forest Fires Cut Off Highway Between Quebec and Labrador West

Rail line to Schefferville sustains minor damage, closed until Friday.

Forest fires burning on the North Shore of Quebec have severed access to Labrador West, closing the western road and rail routes to the bustling mining region.

Route 389-the only highway connecting the border region to the rest of Quebec-was closed on Sunday evening due to a fire on the North Shore. Quebec towns like Fermont still have access to Newfoundland and Labrador via the Trans-Labrador highway to the east.

The rail line, connecting Sept-Iles on the North Shore to the mining town of Schefferville at the border, has also been shut down after sustaining minor damage by fire.

Radio-Canada reported shipments of food were flown in to Schefferville on Sunday, and the rail lines will be closed “for a preventative period” lasting until Friday. The line is owned by Rio Tinto IOC, with the passenger service offered by Tshiuten Rail Transportation.

The fire has reportedly damaged a telecommunications tower and a fibre optic line, both belonging to Rio Tinto IOC.

More than 14,000 residents of Quebec have been evacuated from their homes in recent days, including Sept-Iles and the neighbouring Innu community of Mani-Utenam. As of Sunday, 47 people had been airlifted to hospitals in Quebec City and Monteal.

To mark the occasion, rainbow flags will be raised at the Nunatsiavut Assembly building in Hopedale, and outside of the Nunatsiavut Government building in Nain.

“Let’s stand together to ensure Nunatsiavut is a safe and inclusive place for all who work, live and visit.” Said Gerald Asivak, Minister of Health and Social Development and Ordinary Member for Upper Lake Melville. “We should be proud of the diversity of our people and support each other to ensure we build a better future for all Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.”
