LATP Offices in Nain and Hopedale Update (Audio to be added later)

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership would like to notify the residents of Nain and Hopedale that they now have 2 new Nunatsiavut Career Counsellors for the north coast.

The LATP offices are both located in Hopedale and Nain.

We spoke with the two Nunatsiavut Career Counsellors.

Georgia Abel is the new Nunatsiavut Career Counsellor for Hopedale.

She says she will be holding an open house from Monday, June 19, 2023, at 6-8 pm and again on Tuesday, June 20, from 1-4 pm.

Abel says right now she does not have access to a work phone, but clients can get in touch with her by email.

The open house location will be at 15 Centre Avenue, in the post office building.

She adds that this will be a great way to meet staff members, enjoy some refreshments, and to win a door prize.

We also had an update with Career Counsellor Leah Blake from the Nain office.

She would like to inform the residents of Nain that her office is open, for those who would like to get their resume updated, you can do so by contacting Blake.

Spencer Remple (Audio to be added later)

Spencer Remple, the man who has been walking around all of Nain, Nunatsiavut with a GoPro, is well known as the “Youtuber.”

We were curious as to why he’s been sharing our ways of living and posting videos to YouTube, so we sat down and spoke with him and to ask him why and to get a clearer message from him.

Mittsulautta Program

Peggy Andersen is the Assistant Manager for the Illusuak Cultural Centre.

Andersen holds a program called Mittsulautta, a temporary name, with hopes of having it changed in the future.

Andersen mentions how she enjoys the togetherness of people and is happy to includethe Tupik pilot project along with her Mittsilautta program.

Andersen speaks of how sewing, crafting, painting, drawing and other artistic things are very therapeutic for her and feels that it applies for the people who attend her programs as well.

Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 6 pm, Peggy will be holding one of many Mittsilautta programs at the Tupik for anyone who’s interested in joining her on doing any crafts. She asks whoever will be joining to supply your own materials, and that if you are bringing a child or children, to please have them supervised. All residents of Nain are welcome, young, and old, she hopes to see you there.

Community Freezer Update

We spoke with a few of the coastal community freezers for an update this morning, although they are stocked with very little.

Nain is currently stocked with char, Hopedale has a few bags of smoked capelin, and awaiting the last shipment of caribou meat that will be coming in from Goose Bay. Makkovik is currently stocked with whole cod fish and looking forward to having donations of arctic char from Torngat Fisheries this upcoming fall.

For the communities of Postville and Rigolet, we will have an update once it becomes available.

Just a friendly reminder that all coastal community freezers do accept donations of wild foods.

Hopedale CHW Update

We had a brief update from Natalie Lane, Language Program Community Worker from Hopedale.

Lane partners with Simeonie Merkuratsuk, based out of Nain, for Nunatsiavut Government’s word of the day, hosts Inuktitut Bingo twice a week, she will be starting Inuktitut classes for parents of school aged kids once a week with Doris Dicker in the month of June. She offers mitt making with Sarah Jensen, this will be starting this month, and they will gather names of who’s interested, starting with 5 names that will be chosen out of a list until they complete that list.

Lane also partners with other departments to include Inuktitut resources to the community of Hopedale.

Lane is currently seeking individuals to teach drum dancing to both adults and children, along with other cultural teachings such as skinning a seal and making pitsik. Lane is available to hold cultural related programming such as pitsik making, drum dancing and sewing once she has interest in teachers.

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks as Natalie will be having much more on the go in Hopedale.

It’s day 2 today for the Nunatsiavut Assembly sitting in Hopedale.

We recorded a short clip of their live broadcast, speaking on the Member’s Statements.

Call for Tender: Hebron Boat Charter

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Language, Culture and Tourism operates a Hebron Ambassador Program.

The program requires transport from Nain to Hebron from the middle of July to the end of August, dependent on weather and ocean conditions.

The Department requires a Hebron Boat Charter Service to bring goods, supplies and staff from Nain to Hebron.

Deadline is July 4, 2023, at 4:00 PM.

New Stamp

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami congratulated Nellie Cormoyea for being featured on a new Canada Post stamp that was unveiled yesterday UluKatuk.

The stamp featuring Nellie’s image is one of three to be reloaded nationally on Wednesday, June 21 to commemorate National Indigenous People’s Day.

They said thank you Nellie for a lifetime of visionary leadership and thank you Canada Post for this wonderful recognition of Inuit in Canada.

Nunatsiavut Assembly Sitting Day 1

The Nunatsiavut Assembly sitting is taking place in Hopedale today.

Today marks Day 1 for the assembly.

At 9 am this morning, they started off the assembly by a prayer followed by the opening address by the President.

On the agenda they also discussed: recognition of visitors in the gallery, Minister’s statements, member statements and return to oral questions.

On the agenda it states the hiring for work on the Family Trees (AngajukKâk Flowers to First Minister); request for an update on LATP reopening in Nunatsiavut and the migratory bird hunt in Upper Lake Melville.

We will have more coverage on the assembly once it becomes available.

Torngat Fisheries Meetings and AGM (Audio to be added later)

Torngat Fish Producers Co-Operative and its Board of Directors met in each of the north coast communities in late April.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says the turnouts in each community was different.

Watts says financial operations from last year were under discussion.

The Annual General Meeting was held in Postville.
