NICG Bridge Rebuild

The Nain Inuit Community Government will be busy with their projects once they receive freight on the boat.

Joe Dicker is the Angajukâk for NICG.

The town has planned to tear down the old wooden bridge located across near the playground, and rebuild a brand-new bridge.

They had done interviews early this week. They will hire on 6 local employees to rebuild the bridge.

Once they hire on the 6 employees they will begin with the bridge early next week.

Dicker says once they begin the bridge no one is to enter this area until finished.

They will have more updates once they receive freight from off the Kamutik W.

Hopedale Canada Day Events

The Hopedale Canada Day celebrations are now posted.

They begin their events with the singing of Anthem at 9:15am.

Then they start off with a few games, such as running race, bike race, 3-legged race, back-to-back race, ball throw, and egg toss.

At 12 noon during Lunch hour, they will have a community BBQ served with a cake located at the Hopedale RCMP Detachment.

1pm will be their Parade followed by best decorated truck with a prize of $200, 4-wheeler with a prize of $100, bicycle with a prize of $75, and a stroller with the prize of $50.

1:30pm they will continue with more games of sneaker kick, skipping race, ball throw, and the flat race with a 1st prize of $400, 2nd prize of $300, and 3rd prize of $200.

In the evening located at the Nanuk Centre they are holding toddler games of crawling race, smiling contest, and best decorated Canada Day hat. 2-year-old running race, ball throw, and find your parent, and 3-year-old running race, ball throw and find your parent.

Seal crawl, paper airplane throw, monkey dance, bean bag toss, owl hop, blindfold find your partner, go get, wheelbarrow race, and skipping race.

All games prizes will be 1st place of $15, 2nd place of $12, and 3rd place of $7.

Tupik Project (Audio)

The Tupik Program first began on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, in Nain.

We spoke with Maria E Merkuratsuk.

She says tonight she will be holding a Fish Chip making this evening at the tent.

Activities will include learning the inuttitut language, storytelling, traditional activities and games, having traditional foods, fishing and pitsik/iKalujak making and much more.

Town Clean Up/Property Clean Up

The Nain Recreation Department held a town clean up/property clean up this past weekend.

This was sponsored by NICG, CYN, NICG Rec. Department, and the CYN Fire Department.

Kerri Kohlmeister is the Recreation Assistant.

On Sunday, June 25, started 1-5pm they met at the town dump, with gloves, and garbage bags provided.

The property clean up winners were Herman Webb who won a $200 grocery hamper, Richard Ikkusek won the free water and sewer for a year, and Brendon Dicker won a $50 northern gift card.

The town clean up for ages 13+, winners were Lydia Karpik winning a $200 grocery hamper, another $200 grocery hamper to Lisa Ivany, Shannon Dicker won a bingo package donated from the Recreation Department and Fire Department, and Gwen Dyson won the frozen food box donated by YC.

For the 12 and under pedal bike the winner was Sarah Wyatt.

Kolhmeister said there were 5 names submitted for the property clean up, and 15 adults attended the town clean up and 3 children under the age of 12.

Rigolet Canada Day Events

Canada Day is soon approaching. In Rigolet, they will celebrate Canada Day at the Net Loft starting 1pm.

Cynthia Pottle is the Recreation Director for the Rigolet Inuit Community Government.

They will have an opening remark speech held by Melva Williams the Ordinary Member for Nunatsiavut Government. After the speech they will than raise the flag.

Starting 9am they will hold a Volley-Ball Tournament for ages 14+, teams will consist of 3 on 3, and the fee is $10 per player. Winners will get half the monies. The names will be chosen randomly.

At 4:30pm VALE will host a community BBQ located at the Net Loft.

They will than go for a walk around town in the loop from the Net Loft, then return to play a few games for all ages depending on the weather such as.

3-legged race, water relay of water balloon toss, a water bucket challenge, running races, and an egg race.

In the evening from 7-11pm they will hold a family dance along with fireworks starting 11pm located at the local dock.

Pottle adds that she hopes to see a lot of people out to enjoy the Canada Day celebration, thanks and she looks forward to seeing you all.

Coastal Community Freezer Update

OKâlaKatiget Society contacted each of the community freezers along the coast for updates.

In Hopedale, they have capelin.

In Makkovik, they have cod fish.

The town of Rigolet has Cod Loins, Chicken thighs, Chicken legs, Chicken hearts, and Pork Roast.

Nain’s community freezer is currently empty.

We will get the Postville community freezer update once it becomes available.

Nain Canada Day Events (Audio)

Canada Day this year will be celebrating the 156th birthday of Canada on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

The Recreation Department has events planned for Nain starting on Friday, June 30th.

Gwen Dyson is the After School Program Supervisor with the Recreation Department.

There are a lot of events scheduled for Canada Day such as a Community Breakfast, Fishing Contest, a BBQ sponsored by VALE, Games, Fireworks, and much more.

Summer Recreation Program

The Nain Recreation Department will soon open for the Summer Recreation Program.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director.

Ivany said that they just received funding last week for the program.

They will start to hire staff members and once they do, they will put out a sign-up application.

We will have more updates on this once it becomes available.

MP Jones Rings HOPE Bell

Labrador MP Yvonne Jones marked another milestone in her cancer journey over the weekend.

Jones was joined by a number of supporters and survivors in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to ring the bell of HOPE for a second time.

The Liberal MP recently returned to the House of Commons after taking time off to undergo treatment for a second bout of breast cancer.

While messages of support continue to pour in from residents and colleagues, Jones continues to stress the importance of regular check-ups for early detection.

Torngat Wildlife Plants and Fisheries Secretariat

The Torngat Wildlife Plants and Fisheries Secretariat are looking to hire snow crab surveyors.

Right now, they are accepting requests for applications on the post season snow crab survey.

They are also trying to find a vessel and crew to conduct a snow crab survey in NAFO area 2 J North under the director of Torngat Secretariat personnel.

They hope to conduct these surveys between August 25 to September 10, 2023.
