Beverly Hunter is the Regional Elder’s Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government, based out of Hopedale.

We spoke briefly with Beverly about the Senior’s NL team.

Hunter mentions that the Seniors NL team has been trying to get to the Nunatsiavut communities for a while, but other things just kept coming up.

Hunter say’s that, the Seniors NL team want to hear more from the Seniors of each Nunatsiavut Community, and not only the seniors, but from the community members as well.

Summer Recreation Program Registrations

Nain’s Recreation will be holding their yearly Summer Recreation Program registration on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

Only parents, grandparents, or guardians can go and sign up for the child/children you want in the program.

There are limited spots for the registration.
For 4 year olds there is limited spots of 6 spots
For 5-7 year olds there is limited spots of 15 spots
For 8-12 year olds there is limited spots for 15 spots
After these numbers are reached, the children will be waitlisted, and the spots are at a first come first served basis.

The starting date for this program will be Thursday, July 6, 2023. There is a $30.00 fee required. The registration will be taking place at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

Nain Fish Plant Update

The Nain Fish Plant has started up their clean up.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Supervisor for Nain.

Kohlmeister says that the plant will be ready to start accepting char on Monday, July 10.

There are 10 employees working at the fish plant.

There will be more information once they finish their cleaning.

Forest Fire Near Nain

OKâlaKatiget Society had an update from the Newfoundland and Labrador Fisheries and Agriculture.

There is a forest fire located near Nain due to the lightning that occurred couple days ago.

We spoke to Jason Glode, the Regional Duty Officer.

30 kms inland, and 54 kms Northwest of Nain there is a forest fire.

Glode said they are monitoring this through satellite.

There are no cabins near the forest fire.

Glode will give more updates when they have more updated satellite screening available.

Contaminated Eggs and Fish

The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) is advising residents of elevated levels of oil compounds found in eggs and arctic char in the Postville and Nain areas

After a diesel spill of 3,000 litres in Kaikopok Bay near Postville in 2020, NG, in collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada, began testing for oil contaminants to determine any long-term, lasting impacts.

Results of the analyses showed elevated levels of oil compounds in Postville compared to Nain, and elevated levels in both communities for 2021.

This resulted in a harvesting advisory and a request to Health Canada for a review of the potential health implications. Residents of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims requiring more information, please contact:

LATP Office In Hopedale (Audio)

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership office in Hopedale are still accepting applications for any trade’s programs.

We spoke with Georgia Able the Career Counsellor for Hopedale.

She says her office is now located at 15 center avenue in Hopedale.

Abel says right now she is assisting clients with resumes, and other applications needed.

Makkovik Canada Day Events

The Makkovik Recreation Department and Recreation Committee now have their Canada Day events all planned and ready.

There will be a cake contest, individuals who participates must drop off their cakes at 10:30am at the Makkovik arena.

Starting at 11am the community parade will begin located at the school.

And at Lunch hour at the arena, canteen will be open with food for sale.

From 1-3pm they will have games such as Plinko, Ring Toss, Fish Pond, Tombola, Darts, Mini golf, Face painting, Dime drop, Cake walk, Bottle stall, and a Bouncy castle.

At 3pm they will have a paper plane and coloring contest for children.

And a bingo card will be for sale from 3-5pm and bingo will start at 6pm.

Then they finish off with fireworks at 10pm.

Request for Applications for the Inuit Connection Program

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism is accepting applications from Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement within Nunatsiavut and Upper Lake Melville to attend the Inuit Connection Program at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station for the 2023 Season.

This is a partnership project between the Nunatsiavut Government, Parks Canada, and Makivik Corporation. The goal is to enable Labrador and Nunavik Inuit an opportunity to reconnect with their homeland and provide opportunities to understand how to make the park a living, vibrant Inuit place that is meaningful in the present and the future. The following are specific to this project:

Funding for 10 Beneficiaries (family or individual) to explore the park and connect at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station for a one-week period from August 5-12, 2023;

Participants must have a strong connection and interest to their homeland and offer insights that may enhance future programming and discussions. Beneficiaries will be selected on the merit of their applications. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Applicants must be willing to travel by charter to Nain and then to the Torngat Mountains Base Camp. Travel by speed boat and helicopter may also be expected. Applicants must submit a completed application by July 21, 2022 by 4:00 PM AST.

Labrador Marine Inc.

Labrador Marine Inc. are expecting delays with the Kamutik W on the north coast due to ice issues.

We spoke with Dave Leyden, Operations Manager.

He says right now they still have ice issues between Makkovik and around Cape Harrison and into Gros Water Bay.

Delays are expected.

Reservations are required and please ensure you book as early as possible prior to your planned departure. Failure to do so will likely result in you not being able to book space.

Passengers from outside the local area can now reserve space to travel on the Goose Bay to Black Tickle Run and the Northern Labrador Run.

Reservations are required and must be booked at least 24 hours prior to departure from any port. Space cannot be reserved on the day of sailing.

Reservation Agents take calls, toll-free between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Monday to Saturday and 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday.

A $25.00 non-refundable deposit is required for each reservation. Return (2nd reservation) will be an additional deposit.

Carbon Tax

The second carbon tax is embedded within federal clean fuel regulations set to take effect on July 1, 2023.

The regulations will require producers to reduce the carbon content of their fuels.

If they can’t meet those requirements, they’ll have to pay the second carbon tax.
