Contaminated Egg and Fish Updates(Audio)

Jim Goudie is the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources with Nunatsiavut Government, based out of Postville.

We spoke with Jim for an update, in regards to the oil spill that happened in Postville in 2020.

Goudie says 3000 liters of oil was spilled in Postville in 2020, and since then, they have been doing ongoing tests in eggs and fish in Postville and Nain, to see what levels of contamination are in these 2 wild foods.

Summer Recreation Program Updates

The Summer Recreation program started on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

Gwen Dyson is the After School Program Supervisor with the Recreation Department in Nain.

The Summer Recreation program is from Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm, and 1-4pm.

Children from ages 5-7 and 8-12 is in the summer program.

Serenity Ivany is the program coordinator for the age group of 5-7. With one spot open for this age.

There are 4 employees in this age group, they are Caleb Obed, Zack Dicker, Denzel Dicker, and Kiera Jararuse.

Caleb Dicker is the program coordinator for the age group of 8-12. All spots are filled.

There are 4 employees in this age group, they are Michael Obed, Menzel Lidd, John Dicker, and Serena Blake.

The Recreation Department also has a daily seniors program Monday-Friday, 1-3pm at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center.

Tori Webb is the Seniors Program Coordinator, along with Grace Winters and Sam Webb who are the Seniors Program Workers.

Noah Nochasak Award

The Nunatsiavut Government in Nain will hold an award presentation.

The recipient of the 2023 Jim Price Passion award from Paddle Newfoundland and Labrador.

The award is presented to an individual of the paddling community who has demonstrated real excitement and enthusiasm for paddling in the province and has inspired others to take up the sport of paddling or improve their current paddling skills.

It was created to honor Jim Price’s contribution to the paddling community.

Minister Roxanne Barbour of Nunatsiavut Government will give the award.

On Wednesday, July 12 there will be an award presentation given to Noah Nochasak of Nain.

This award presentation will be located at the Illusuak Centre from 3:30pm. All is welcome.

Makkovik & Nain Fish Plant Updates

The Makkovik Fish Plant are still accepting names for work.

We spoke with Angel Chaulk the Clerk.

There are 17 employees working now. They are still accepting names for work, and anyone out of town must have their own accommodations.

The starting wage is $17.28 plus vacation pay.

In the plant they started their cleaning to get ready for the crab season.

The Nain Fish plant has 15 employees working today.

We spoke with Deidi Kohlmeister, Supervisor for Nain.

So far, they have 5 fisherman fishing for the plant and so far 1 has come with a bunch of fish that will be smoked fish soon.

Inuttitut Adult Social

The Department of Language culture and tourism will be holding an Inuktitut Adult Social tonight.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program coordinator for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the inuttitut adult social is aimed for ages 31 years to 54 years.

This adult social will be held at the Illusuak center tonight at 6pm.

Jararuse says they will be serving finger food and refreshments will be served.

On the agenda, they will be playing some fun games, and great door prizes will be won, and they hope that people will come out and see the event.

Forest Fire Near Nain Update

Here is another update on the Forest fire near Nain.

The forest fire is located 30 kms inland, and 54 kms Northwest of Nain.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Fisheries and Agriculture are monitoring the fire.

The fire began with a lightning storm.

We spoke with Brad White, the Regional Duty Officer.

He says since yesterday there was no change in the fire.

White says there is little activity on the south end, and the fire did not change in size.

He adds that they will be expecting little activity and they are getting updates from the remote sensing.

The fire is spread along the edges.

Overnight the fire had grown spreading to the North area of 2400 hectors.

White says they are working on a plan to inspect the area, and they are still monitoring the fire through satellite.

White will have more updates once it becomes available.

He spoke in NG’s Assembly sitting with an update from his department.

Changes to Inuit First Initiative

The Department of Health and Social Development is advising of positive changes to the approval process for the Inuit First Initiative.
These changes ensure DHSD is responsibly delivering programs and services in a sustainable manner until Nunatsiavut Government is ready for the long-term approaching of administering the ICFI, which aligns with NG’s vision of Inuit self-determination.
The ICFI was established to assist families in navigating and accessing services and support for their child’s medical, mental health and educational needs. It ensures Inuit children to have access to the essential government funded health, social and educational products, services and supports they need when they need them. All caregivers of Inuit children between the ages of 0-18 and are recognized by an Inuit Land Claim Organization, no matter where they live in Canada, can request funding through ICFI.
NG is now responsible for reviewing all applications to Indigenous Services Canada from Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries residing in NFLD Labrador.
NG has Child Service Workers in the Nunatsiavut region and HVGB, in assertion to a Regional Child Services Program Manager who can assist with services and supports for Nunatsiavut Beneficiary children through an application process. For more information, please call 1-855-572-4453.

Inuttitut Adult Social

The Nunatsiavut Language, Culture and Tourism is holding an Inuttitut Adult Social event.

On Monday, July 10 from 6-7pm they will hold a Inuttitut Social event for adults.
This event aims to give your suggestions on what you would like to see in this program.
The Inuttitut Social event is for adults ages 31-54 years, also food and refreshments will be served.

The MHA for Torngat Mountains District Lela Evans recently hired a new Constituency Assistant.
Suzanne Ford is her new Constituency Assistant since June 6, 2023.
