No New Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Today, Tuesday, November 3, Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province has three active cases.

284 people have recovered from the virus and to date, 53,123 people have been tested.

People entering Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded to adhere to the orders from the Chief Medical Officer of Health and self-isolate in accordance with the province’s Public Health requirements.

In Alert Level 2, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices. Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

People are reminded that COVID Alert is available for download free through the Apple or Google Play app stores. Public Health is encouraging people to download the app to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Radio Producer Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening as a Radio Producer Assistant.

This funded position is open for approximately 26 weeks ending in March.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Researching story ideas
• interviewing, story writing
• Transferring old formatted music and archives to new program formats
• Assisting radio producers with all aspects of radio production

The position is open until it is filled, and preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants with knowledge of Inuktitut will be a strong asset.

Qualifications are:

• Must be between the ages of 18 – 30
• A strong interest in media communications and current affairs
• Ability to work independently

Denture Appointments

The Department of Health and Social Development along the coast are taking names to make appointment for dentures.

Alice Okkuatsiak is the Community Health Worker with the Nain DHSD.

Charles Croker from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the DHSD’s are in the process of setting up denture clinics for the five Nunatsiavut communities in the near future.

She says the NIHB Program will be covering 100% of the current dental fee guide for the services, so there’ll be no charge to the patients.

Croker will be going to the five communities time to time to make appointments for people who need dentures.

Croker will provide clients with examinations, new complete and partial dentures if they are eligible, relines, rebases, repairs and adjustments.

The appointments are available to non beneficiaries as well but will bill them accordingly.

There are no dates set up yet since they have to see if there is interest.

NICG Ticket Draw

The 50th anniversary for the Nain Inuit Community Government had their ticket draw last Friday, October 30th, 2020.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKak for the NICG.

He says that there are some prizes still need to be claimed from people’s tickets and most prizes have been claimed.

Dicker says that anyone who haven’t claimed their prizes, have until this Friday, November 6th to get them.

He added that if people do not claim their prizes by Friday, the ICG will be doing a redraw of the tickets that haven’t been presented yet.

So, get your tickets presented and claim your prize before they will be redrawn to another ticket number.

PiusituKavut Back on Air Tomorrow

PiusituKavut show is coming back on air tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4.

OKalaKatiget Society radio department has not aired this Inuktitut show since Wednesday, February 26, 2020.

So it has been well over 8 months since radio held the last show.

This was due to shortage of staff first, then looking at Easter Time, and then the unexpected COVID pandemic occurred that affected everyone and everywhere.

Everyone had to take precaution of COVID-19 and follow orders from the Health Officials to self-isolate, social distance, wash hands and start wearing face masks.

To our audience, OK Radio is happy to say that PiusituKavut show will be starting again November 4, so tune in at 1pm tomorrow.

Updating Daycares (Audio to be added later)

Most of the daycares on the in north coast communities opened earlier than the one in Nain this fall, with the exception of Postville.

Jenny Lyall is the Regional Daycare Operator for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the daycare operations are going well, but they had to change few programs due COVID-19.

Lyall says the centres in Rigolet, Makkovik and Hopedale opened their doors August 29, with Nain opening its doors October 13.

Lyall says the Nain daycare staff was in training for Early Childhood Education Certificate courses at the Pigutsavik Centre, and didn’t complete their exams till October 9.

The Rotational Worker Policy Review completed by Quality of Care NL was released earlier today. No changes will be made to this policy.

Voisey’s Bay and Muskrat Falls Site Environmental Concerns

Elizabeth Penashue, an Innu Elder of Sheshashui is well known and respected by many people.

It’s good to hear many elders speak about their traditions and culture, of going hunting and going out on the land.

Her big concern is the Muskrat Falls project and the Voisey’s Project affecting the environment.

She says that it’s important to talk about this because it makes a lot of damage to the environment, affecting the animals, the trees, berries, and more.

Test Determines “False Positive” COVID-19 Case in Voisey’s Bay

The Nunatsiavut Government wishes to advise Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement that it has been informed that the presumptive positive case of COVID-19 at the Voisey’s Bay mine site has turned out to be negative.

An individual presented at the site as asymptomatic on Monday, October 26, participating in and passing all normal screening protocols.

On Wednesday October 28th, the individual began exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 and was immediately placed into self-isolation. A subsequent test confirmed a presumptive positive case.

A second test was administered on Saturday, October 31st, and sent to St. John’s for processing at the provincial Public Health lab. The results came back negative this morning.

Beneficiaries are urged to remain vigilant and to continue following all public health protocols (proper hand hygiene, social distancing, avoid large crowds, wear a mask, etc.) to prevent potential exposure and spread of COVID-19.

Woodward Group of Companies Shipping Season

The closing of the Labrador shipping season is just a couple of weeks away.

Dennis White is the General Manager for Woodward Group of Companies.

He says the last day to have your guaranteed delivery for freight for the end of the 2020 shipping season is on Friday November 13, 2020.

Meanwhile, the Woodward’s Oil tanker will be traveling to the north coast communities until Friday, November 27, 2020.

He adds that all commercial and residential freight must be received by the deadline date to be assured of guaranteed delivery this season.

White says the deadline has been extended an additional five days from last year in 2019.

This provides added flexibility to shippers.

The November 13 deadline applies to all freight at all ports.
