Postville ICG Update

The Postville Inuit Community Government has stopped some projects for the winter season.

Glenn Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for the Postville ICG.

He would like to welcome the new Recreation Director, Pauline Manak that just started last week.

When it comes to the Town Garage, the construction has stopped because of the weather conditions and some workers that were working are doing some training.

The ICG will soon start laying off the season workers as well.

The floating dock is now brought in for the winter.

The Interpretation Centre is still ongoing, there is a list of deficiencies that they are working on.

The Centre won’t be done until next spring in 2021.

2 Earthquakes Reported Near Makkovik

There was another two earthquakes off the coast of Labrador.

Allison Bent is the current seismologist on call for the Canadian hazards information service with the natural resources Canada/government of Canada.

She says a 3.7 magnitude earthquake, centered 6 km East Northeast of Makkovik, struck just before 4 a.m. local time.

Bent says the second one accrued at a 3.5 magnitude earthquake a few minutes later just 4 km East Northeast from Makkovik.

She says they are likely aftershocks from the previous earthquake.

That’s now four earthquakes near Makkovik in less than a month and one of a series of quakes in the general area over the last few months.

The Canadian Earthquake Centre says quakes of that magnitude are not expected to result in any reports of damage.

Residents who may have felt the tremblor are invited to fill out a questionnaire on the Natural Resources Canada website.

There is no known fault line in the area, but quakes are not uncommon along the coastline where the thick ancient rock of the Canadian Shield meets thinner rock on the ocean floor.

Makkovik Christmas Gatherings

Traditional parades and large-scale outdoor ceremonies or events, including community fireworks and bonfires, are not recommended at this time.

Parades and outdoor ceremonies/events normally bring together community organizations and residents to recognize special dates, holidays or other observances.

Such large gatherings can introduce added risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given the above recommendation of the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Newfoundland Labrador (CMOH) the Makkovik Inuit Community Government will be cancelling all of its traditionally sponsored Christmas events and will do these events virtually during this COVID-19 Pandemic.

Remember: People, Space, Time, Place.

• People: Interacting with more people raises the risk of spread of COVID-19.
• Space: The closer you are to people, the greater the risk of spread of COVID-19.
• Time: Risk of spread increases as people spend longer amounts of time together.
• Place: Indoor places are more risky than outdoors. Organizers should plan for situations and activities with the least amount of risk possible and individuals should carefully consider the risk associated with any events before they attend.

MICG would like to thank the public for your continued respect for the COVID-19 measures.

Together we can prevent the spread of this virus in our community.
