Peter Jacobs (Audio to be added later)

Peter Jacobs first released his first CD in 2007, since then, he has released 12 CD’s.

Take Me Back was and is still a major hit that we here at OKalaKatiget Radio, still continue to play for our audience.

Jacobs also expects to release a new CD sometime this spring.

He is hopeful that this COVID-19 pandemic will go away soon so that he can travel and play his music.

We will be speaking with Peter Jacobs later today on our Labrador Memories program to learn more about his new song and the CD that he will soon release.

Greens Construction LTD

The Greens Construction LTD has open employment as a Laborer and a Carpenter, for four weeks.

The successful candidates will travel to remote sites to Village Bay and Hebron located in Northern Labrador.

As the successful applicant, you must be able to demonstrate the following qualifications or skills and abilities such as:

Experience in the construction industry

Able to work well with others

Be able to work at remote locations

And you must be a Nunatsiavut Beneficiary

DHSD Events Nain

Elsie Russell is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker for the Department of Health and Social Development.

Every Monday there is a support program starting at 7pm.

On Wednesdays they hold a program for MMIWG, Murdered and Missing Women and Girls from 9am-4pm at the Illusuak Building.

Right now, they are making crafts like Pualuks, and also they hold cultural circles for support.

This Thursday coming, they have a Sketch Night, with 8 seats available and it is limited.

And next week later they will hold a painting night.

If you are interested, you are to reach out to Elsie at 922-2183.

Also, on the end of the month, Wednesday February 24, 2021 they will have a ADHD group for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder starting at 7pm.

North Coast Second Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine

The second dose of COVID-19 vaccines will be available for the coast of Labrador.

The date and times are listed for:

Postville: Wednesday, February 10th from 9:30am-1:00pm at the DHSD Building.

Hopedale: Wednesday, February 10th from 6:00pm-8:30pm also on Thursday, February 11th from 9:00am-4:00pm at the Nanuk Centre.

Nain: Friday, February 12th from 10:00am-8:00pm also on Saturday, February 13th from 9:00am-4:00pm at the JS Centre.

LATP Updates (Audio to be added later)

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership will be starting the Underground Mine Training program soon.

Keith Jacque is the Executive Director with the LATP.

The Underground Mine Training is set to begin in the month of May and June 2021.

COVID-19 Update

Today, (Friday, February 5) Newfoundland and Labrador has one new confirmed case of COVID-19.

The one new confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region between 50-59 years of age.

The individual is a close contact of a previous known case. The individual is a member of the same household.

The individual is self-isolating. Contact tracing is complete.

The investigation into the source of the infection for the cluster in the Eastern Health region ongoing. There are six confirmed cases associated with the cluster.

The Department of Health and Community Services is also advising the public that testing by the Public Health and Microbiology Laboratory is ongoing for the presumptive positive case of COVID-19 reported yesterday.

There are 14 active cases.

There has been one new recovery in the Central Health region since yesterday, meaning 391 people have recovered from the virus.

There is no one in the hospital.

To date, 81,594 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

5th Annual Ice Hockey Tournament in Memory of Grace Jararuse

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Nain Minor Ice Hockey Tournament in Memory of Grace Jararuse.

The tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, February 23 to Wednesday, February 24, 2021, for children under the age of 12.

Starting on Tuesday, February 26, to Wednesday, February 27, 2021 they have the games set for females and males.

And the Adult division is set for Friday, March 5 to Sunday, March 7, 2021.

Makkovik Online Auction

The first auction for 2021 on the Makkovik Online Auction fundraiser for the Moravian Church ended on the 31st of January.

Carol Gear is the organizer for the fundraiser, she says that $50,579.00 has been raised to date.

The February auction will start in mid-February and Gear will be asking for donations for this months auction once the January auction closes.

Gear adds that she will not know the total amount raised for the month of January until all the items has been paid for.

Torngat Housing Update

Work is ongoing on the last two new homes in Hopedale and Rigolet.

William Lucy is the coordinator for Torngat Regional Housing Association.

He says one has been turned over to the owners in Hopedale.

Lucy says the crew is putting up cupboards and doing finish work on the last home, and that home should be finished in a week or so.

In Rigolet, the crew is plastering and painting on the last home.

He says the work in that new home should be completed by the end of February where it was started late.

Lucy added there’s one home to be repaired in Rigolet and another in Nain, but there will be more information on the repairs at a later date.

NG Assembly (Audio to be added later)

The Nunatsiavut Government Assembly sitting concluded on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021.

Marlene Winters Wheeler, an Ordinary Member for the Constituency of Upper Lake Melville has been selected as the speaker for the assembly while Roland Saunders has been selected as the Deputy Speaker.

Saunders is also an Ordinary Member for the Constituency of Canada who resides in Alberta.

Speaker Winters Wheeler says that while at this assembly agenda items included presentations, reports from Inuit Community Governments, and member statements.
