Coastal Community Freezer Updates

OKâlaKatiget Society contacted the coastal community freezers for updates.

In Hopedale they have capelin and trout.

Rigolet has chicken legs.

In Postville they have char, cod fish, and smelts.

There is nothing available now for Nain.

We will get Makkovik freezer once it becomes available.

Self Care Day

With International Self-Care Day being on Monday, July 24, 2023 the Child & Youth Mental Health Team is promoting the day with a virtual contest.

Self-Care allows you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can better relate to others. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), engaging in self-care routines has been clinically proven to assist in reducing or eliminating anxiety and depression, reducing stress, improving concentration, minimizing frustration and anger, increasing happiness, and so much more.

This contest is open to all ages; and open to Nunatsiavut communities, Upper Lake Melville & the Canadian Constituency. They have a $50 prepaid MasterCard and a Play Therapy kit that includes paints, fidget toys, breathing techniques, toys, puppets that’s up for grabs.

Little Bay South Trip in Hopedale

Sarah Jensen is the Supervisor for Hopedale’s Christian Youth Camp. The theme for the Christian Youth Camp this year is “Our daily bread”

Jensen planned a camping trip for youth ages 9-13 years, to Little Bay South, and she mentions that she tries to hold one camping trip every year.

Jensen mentions some activities planned for the youth while on their trip, that includes Tie-Dye T-shirts, painting, string art, they will be painting a door as well, with a Christian twist, “Jesus is the door to eternity” so their doors will have messages like “Hope, Love, Faith, Peace, Joy” written on them. They will also go swimming, and she has a planned fishing trip for one day. She adds that they will also be learning about the Culture with their 2 camp guides.
Jensen mentions that they will have bible study lessons daily for an hour, with a sing along in the evening. If the weather permits, they will also have camp fire as well.

There is 1 cook, 3 councillors, another councillor pending. There are 20 children attending. They will be leaving Hopedale today, July 25, 2023 and returning Hopedale Friday morning, July 28, 2023.

Jensen would like to give her thanks to the Hopedale congregation for making this possible for the Children, she wants everyone to keep them all in your prayers as they learn about what an awesome God, we all have and building new relationships together.

Forest Fire Near Nain Update

Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture were informing us the fire updates when a lighting occurred near Nain.

That struck and caused a huge forest fire.

We spoke with Steven Michelin the Conservation officer IIIA.

He says there is no new hot spots reported now for 9 days.

They monitored the forest fire since day 1 that occurred on July 1, 2023.

Michelin adds with the weather pattern, the wind is north northernly, and he adds that they don’t expect to see a fire.

If there is no sign of any fire within the next 2-week period, they will consider no active fires.

He adds that there shouldn’t be any sign of any smoke even from the Quebec fire.

Nain Fish Plant Update

The Torngat Fish Plant in Nain is busy. We spoke with Deidi Kohlmeister, Supervisor for Nain’s Fish Plant.

Today there is 27, 867 lbs of char landed. There are 30 employees working, with 9 fisherman fishing.

Kohlmeister says they have smoked fish for sale at the plant. Hours are from Monday-Friday, 9-5pm.

Nain DHSD Scavenger Hunt

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development Community Health Workers are holding an outdoor scavenger hunt.

This will take place on Wednesday, July 26 starting 6-8pm at the DHSD office in Nain.

We spoke to Wilma Hay Jenkins, Community Health Care Worker.

The scavenger hunt is open to anyone ages 31-54 and those who reside in Nain.

The scavenger hunt is more of a riddle, so this scavenger hunt will be a riddle you need to solve.

Jenkins says that you can walk or use a vehicle for this event.

There are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes available based on points, and the scavenger hunt is around the community.

Jenkins also adds that they will keep their Facebook page updated due to the weather conditions, so please keep an eye out on updates.

Kisigilinik Workshop (Audio)

Kisigilinik, which means to work with seal has a kamek making workshop in Nain.

We spoke with Veronica Flowers, and Kim Pilgrim.

They have funding from Ulonooweg for a summer program, and they offered a kamek making workshop.

Pilgrim says that they are looking for someone who is skilled at cleaning seal, cooking, contributing the seal to the group etc., and you will be financially contributed for your time.

The vessel William Kennedy was in Nain to conduct research near Nain.

We spoke with David McIssac, the captain abord the William Kennedy.

A science crew is doing research near Webb Bay.

There are 5 crew members abord the William Kennedy.

Rhubarb Festival

Hopedale’s Rhubarb Committee members contacted the OK Society with an update of the 17th Annual Rhubarb Festival.

The Rhubarb Committee was first held in 2006. Doris Dicker, Darlene Winters, and Danielle Mitsuk are the Committee Members.

There is a best smoked fish contest with prizes of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Please have 3 portions of the smoked fish, and entry can be brought to the Nanuk Center by 8pm on Saturday, July 22.

Also on Sunday, July 23 there will be a best rhubarb recipe of breads, desserts, and others.

There is 1st place only for each category of $200. 3 servings of the items can be brought to Nanuk Center by 8pm Sunday, July 23.

NWR Beach Festival Schedule

The North West River Beach Festival will go ahead this weekend.

The largest indigenous outdoor music festival in the province of NL happens on Saturday, July 22nd, and July 23rd.

The festival will take place at the Lester burry memorial park.

On Saturday, July 22 starting 12pm will start off with the opening ceremonies, 1pm is Rigolet Square Dancers, 2pm Montague Brothers, 3pm Richard Neville, 4pm Leander Baikie, 4:30pm John Neville Music & Friends, 5:30pm Jacinda Beals Band, 6:30pm Wild Step, 8:30pm Innu Horizon, 9:30pm Tombstone, and at 10pm there will be fireworks.

From 1-3pm there will be kids’ games.

On Sunday, July 23rd at 12pm will start with Emily Peyton, 12:30pm Ondreya Beals and Eric Mitsuk, 1pm Kirk Lethbridge, 2pm Montague Brothers, 3pm Flummies, 4pm Nitatshun, 5-7pm will be the auction, 7pm Scapa Flow, 8pm Tombstone, and 9pm is the closing ceremonies.

Also, on Sunday 2:30pm there is a red berry pie contest for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, judging will be at 4pm and entries must be dropped off at the beach festival, and a sandcastle contest at the beach, judging will be at 3pm.
