Hopedale LATP Update

Georgia Able is the LATP Career Counsellor in Hopedale.

She says there will be an Underground common core training program that will be offered in Sudbury Ontario funded by LATP this will be a 5-week program.

Mine exposure will be a 3-day training program in Sudbury Ontario, to give you a hands-on experience for underground mining.

Mining foundations will be a 6-week training program offered at the HVGB campus.

Mining simulator will be a 2-day training course offered in HVGB.

Trades common service core will also be offered, and it will be a 2-day course in Sudbury Ontario learning how to work safely in the underground environment.

Nain-Makkovik Fish Plant Updates

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted the Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant for updates.

Diedi Kohlmeister is the Supervisor for Nain Fish Plant.

There is total of 38, 188 pounds of char landed today.

They have 25 employees, and 8 fisherman fishing.

Smoked fish is available to purchase at the plant from Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

Angel Chaulk is the Supervisor for Makkovik Fish Plant.

There is a total of 23 employees working, and 6 of which are students.

There is one active turbot boat, and so far with one landing of 43,379lb.

Makkovik Trout Festival

Makkovik will be holding their 34th annual Trout Festival, August 5th to the 12th.

There are a lot of activities with great prizes, just a few includes decorating your property in Trout Festival Theme, Men’s and Women’s swimming races, a fishing derby, Kids dance in a super hero theme, radio bingo, fire works and sand sculpture contest just to name a few, with awesome cash prizes.

It seems to be a full, and busy schedule for Makkovik’s Annual Trout Festival this year, we will keep our audience update.

TaKuaKautik Food Give Away

The TaKuaKautik Nain Food Bank held their monthly food distribution yesterday evening.

They would like to send a big thanks to the food bank volunteers.

We spoke with Rita Ann Dicker who was one of the volunteers.

She says they were steadily packing bags on the spot, filled to the brim.

The Food bank handed out 160-170 food bags to people and families.

Once again hats off to the Nain food bank volunteers, for your hard work.

Rhubard Festival Update

Doris Dicker, one of 3 Rhubarb Festival Committee Members updated the OKaalaKatiget on what could be the last of the Annual Rhubarb Festival that’s held in Hopedale.

Dicker said, they tried holding their carboard boat race last evening, July 27, but there weren’t any participants. They will go ahead with it again today, July 28, at 2PM down at the boat launch by the Nanuk Centre.
There are 1st 2nd 3rd prizes for both male and female, along with overall door prize.

On Tuesday, August 1st, there will be an Adults Fear Factor, mixed pairs teams of 16-39 years, and 40+. You can register your mixed pairs team to Doris Dicker by Monday, July 31st at 9PM.

Dicker mentions that the Fear Factor may be a wrap for this years Rhubarb Festival, and we will provide any updates.

Canada’s Workers Benifit

The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable tax credit to help individuals and families who are working and earning a low income.

The CWB has two parts: a basic amount and a disability supplement.

You can claim the CWB when you file your income tax return.

Starting in July 2023 and based on the 2022 taxation year, the CWB will provide advance payments equal to 50% of the CWB across 3 payments under the Advanced Canada workers benefit (ACWB). This initiative puts more money in the workers’ pockets to help cope with the rising cost of living.

Anyone who received the CWB in 2022 will receive the advanced payments, there is no need to apply.

Air Borealis Coloring Contest

Air Borelias is holding a Summer Coloring Contest for children.

They are calling all young artists from the 6 Inuit communities in Labrador for the Air Borealis Coloring Contest.

The contest is open to children aged 3 – 13 years old.

The coloring contest participants will be categorized into 3 age groups: 3- 5 years | 6- 8 years | 9 – 13 years.

The contest will end on August 15, 2023, and there are prizes in each age category.

For coloring sheets and supplies as well as more information on the contest, please reach out to your community coordinator at each Department of Health and Social Development in Hopedale, Nain, Natuashish, Postville, Rigolet, and Makkovik.

They will be bringing more exciting activities and contests to other communities in Labrador in the future.

Nominations for Seniors 55+(Audio)

Beverly Hunter is the Regional Elders Coordinator for Nunatsiavut, based out of Hopedale.

Hunter set out nominations for a gathering that will be taking place in Makkovik, in September 2023.

Hunter mentions that there are limited spaces available for up to 20 seniors who reside in the Land Claims area, and she was already gathering a lot of nominations.

TaKuaKautik Food Bank Give Away

The Nain TaKuaKautik Food Bank will hold their Food give away today.

The TaKuaKautik is available to anyone in need, with one bag per family, and are open once a month, on the last Thursday of the month.

This month’s distribution will be held today, Thursday July 27, 2023, from 5-7pm.

The food bank is run 100% on volunteers and donations.

Donations are always helpful to keep food on their shelves to be able to feed our community.

If you have any food donations, the food bank is always accepting donations to keep the food bank open.

Summer Literacy Camp

Brenna McIntyre is the regional coordinator for the Summer Literacy Camp.

McIntyre sent OKaalaKatiget some information, in regards to open spaces for each community.

There are still open spaces in every community expect for Hopedale. Parents or Guardians can still register their child, but they will be waitlisted.

This program is ongoing until August 11, 2023.
