Ethel Pijogge Memorial Heritage Festival Labrathon Event

The Ethel Pijogge Memorial Heritage Festival Labrathon event is going ahead today, Monday, April 26th at 4pm.

This will be taking place at the Hopedale Harbour, below Amaguk Inn.

There will be teams of four that must consist of two male & 2 female; one person from ages 12 and under, 2 people from ages 13-49, and one person from ages 50 and up.

The competition will include log sawing, setting a trap, lighting fire/boiling kettle, and using an ice chisel.

There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Ship Track Markers Removed

The Vale Newfoundland and Labrador has issued a Shipping Notice to the public for today, April 26, 2021.

Please note that the ship track markers will be removed today on the southside only from Edwards Cove East to Tabor Island.

The only safe crossing points currently are the pontoon bridges at Taktok and Tabor Island.

Extreme caution should be exercised around the ships track.

Coastal Freezer Updates

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted each of the community freezers along the coast to see what they have to offer.

The Nain freezer has char and chicken, and most of the caribou and musk ox were delivered, except to those who travelled.

In the Postville, they have smelts, rock cod, char, and cod fish. All their caribou and musk ox has been delivered.

In the Makkovik, they have char, and scallops. Most of their caribou and musk ox has been delivered except for those who travelled.

In Hopedale, they have scallops, moose, and caribou. The caribou is for anyone who wants to pick some up. They also have dry goods such as sugar, tea bags, flour, salt, cereal, packets of soup Kraft dinner, and more.

We will have the Rigolet Community Freezer once it becomes available.

Online Organ Classes (Audio)

An online organ class has been started for anyone who would like to learn how to play music on keyboards.

Tom Gordon is the Professor of Music at MUN in St. John’s.

He says the program or project is going well since the classes started the first week of March.

Gordon says there are 20 people participating and that there are two more interested who has contacted him since then.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Friday, April 23, Newfoundland and Labrador has one new confirmed case of COVID-19.

The one new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is under investigation.

Contact tracing by Public Health officials is underway. Anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There are four new recoveries, one in the Eastern Health region and three in the Western Health region, and 1,020 people have recovered. There is no one in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 23 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

The regional breakdown of the 23 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 14
· Central Health – 1
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 0
· Western Health – 8

To date, 131,140 people have been tested.

There are no new presumptive positive cases.

Ice Safety Awareness

Today is the last day for the Ice Safety Awareness contest.

The Department of Health and Social Development posted daily questions each day this week.

All you must do is call or comment your answer to the question posted on the Nain Dept. of Health & Social Development Facebook page; there is no right or wrong answer.

The last draw will take place at 4pm today and the winner will be commented on the question of the day post.

The random draw winner can pick up their prize at the DHSD Office from Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.

NICG Projects (Audio)

The trail markers on the harbour ice were removed where the season is now closed in Nain.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKak of Nain Inuit Community Government office.

He says the councilors met last Wednesday to have further discussions on the projects fer the spring and into the summer.

Dicker says theyre waiting for a call from the clinic, fire brigade and the RCMP about the road conditions whether they should start plowing the main roads and where the snow is melting earlier this year.

VALE Impacts & Benefits

Members of the Vale’s Aboriginal Affairs department, partnering with Nunatsiavut Government will be visiting your community to give an overview of the 2020 Impacts & Benefits commitments and highlighting upcoming job opportunities with the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion.

Starting Wednesday, April 28th they will be in Rigolet from 2-4pm and 7-9pm located at the Strathcona Building.

In Nain on Monday, May 3rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, they will be at the Boardroom at Nunatsiavut Building.

On Tuesday, May 4th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, they will be in Hopedale located in the Boardroom at the Nunatsiavut Assembly Building.

In Postville, they will arrive on Wednesday, May 5th starting 2-4pm and again from 7-9pm located at the Boardroom in the Kaipokok Community Center.

And in Makkovik, they will be there on Thursday, May 6th starting 2-4pm and again from 7-9pm at the Multipurpose Room in the Makkovik Arena.
