Youth Centre Seal Hunting Program (Dated April 29, 2021)

The Youth Centre had a seal hunting and boil up day on Monday.

Crystal Allen-Webb is the Youth Outreach Worker with the Nain Department of Health and Social Development.

There were 5 youth, 2 guides, and 4 staff that attended the seal hunt this past Monday at the Fall Start Island.

There were 3 skidoos from the DHSD, and the guides and staff took their own.

Tyler Pamak got a seal by the ship track just below two-mile bay.

The youth got the chance to eat some raw liver, seal brain, and the eyeballs. They helped gut the seal, and braided the intestines, and they also were able to take some meat home.

The next day, Heather Angnatok and Maria Merkuratsuk had two youth cleaning the seal skin.

Yesterday the seal skin was drying, and today the two youth will be framing the seal skin.

With this seal skin the two youth are cleaning, they will make seal skin mitts out of it.

Allen-Webb says thank you to the guides, staff and youth for a wonderful day, she is so glad they got to get out on the land and learn about our culture and many ways we could utilize the seal. She also adds a big thank you to the DHSD for giving them a great opportunity.

Memories of Springtime (Audio)

With spring upon us there are some stories and a lot of memories our Inuit Elders remembers.

It’s an early spring this year, which is different from the years before.

And by saying this, the change can only make you memorize the life anyone went through as growing up.
