EI Benefits Running Out for Fisherpersons

The EI Benefits is running out for fisherpersons.

Lela Evans is the MHA for Labrador.

She says she talked with the Labrador MP, Yvonne Jones, Monday evening.

Jones says for those fisherpersons whose EI is running out should contact her office.

The request for EI extension will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

If anyone has any questions can call Karen at 709-927-5210, she will then set up to handle all fisher requests for EI extension.

NICG Update (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is busy repairing the leakage on Middle Path Road.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the NICG.

He says the crew started digging yesterday near 87 Middle Path (Northern Trailer) and 69 Middle Path (Wayne Michelin’s) in preparation to get to the leak.

The water is currently shut off in this area due to the repairs of this leak.

Dicker says he is confident that the leak will be fixed today, but if it continues to tomorrow, they will be giving out water to those affected in this area.

He adds that the projects they have on the go.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Tuesday, May 11, Newfoundland and Labrador has 15 new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

There are six in the Eastern Health region, four in the Central Health region and five in the Western Health region.

The first new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The second new confirmed case is a female in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The third new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The fourth new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The fifth new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The sixth new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The seventh new confirmed case is a male in the Central Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The eighth new confirmed case is a male in the Central Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The ninth new confirmed case is a male in the Central Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The tenth new confirmed case is a female in the Central Health region under 20 years of age. The case is a close contact of a previous case.

The eleventh new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The twelfth new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The thirteenth new confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region under 20 years of age. The case is a close contact of a previous case.

The fourteenth new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The fifteenth new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway. Anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There are five new recoveries, one in the Eastern Health region, three in the Central Health region and one in the Western Health region and 1,069 people have recovered. One person is in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 77 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

The regional breakdown of the 77 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 46
· Central Health – 12
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 1
· Western Health – 18

To date, 136,615 people have been tested.

IlinniaKatigennik Back on Air With a Contest

The IlinniaKatigennik Show will be starting again today, May 11, 2021.

The contest is once again extended until May 28, 2021 as there is not enough interest.

For every person who does an Inuktitut recording will have their name put into a draw from now until May 28, 2021.

Any recordings are done over the phone due to COVID-19 restrictions and will be aired on OKâlaKatiget Society.

You will be compensated for your time of $50 for adults and promo for children.

Please note that it must be your own Inuktitut story to get the $50, and if you are reading someone else’s story or reading a book you will get $25.

This is for anyone along the North Coast and in the Canadian constituency.

Elizabeth Tuglavina from Hopedale and Kayla Wyatt from Nain living in Makkovik are both outreach workers for the Nunatsiavut Government.

Tuglavina and Wyatt will be in Nain to present another SIKU workshop on May 17 & 18th.

Wyatt says that they had sent out invitations to local people who generally work with the youth.

She adds that there are also 10 seats available for any age group who would to participate in learning how to set up your own SIKU account.

Participants will be asked to bring your own device, and this will be held at the Pulâpvik Boardroom from 6 to 8pm.

Wyatt says the workshops will also be held in the other Nunatsiavut communities and travel will end on June 4th.

She adds that this workshop will be ideal for hunters, youth and anyone engaged in community research programs.

There will be snacks and beverages provided for the workshop.

If you are interested in participating in the workshop you can call Kayla Wyatt at 923-2008 before 4:30pm on Friday, a one-day stipend of a gift card at a local store will be presented to the participants.

TaKuaKautik Food Bank Give Away

The TaKuaKautik Food Bank will be going ahead on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

The giveaway will be from 6-8 pm at the Warehouse.

If you did not receive a bag in April but need a bag now, please provide your name to Megan Hudson.

If you have Food Bank bags, please return them to the yellow container on the steps at the Warehouse.

You must wear a mask during pick-ups.

Young Women’s Day

Young Women’s Day will be held on Thursday, May 20 this year.

Joan Dicker Is the Organizer of the Young Women’s Day.

She says the original date for this was set for March 6, but due to the lockdown that was in place at the time, and every other date they planned after did not work out due to weather and travel related reasons.

If there are any girls or single women aged 15 and older that would like to celebrate their day this year, there will be a meeting today, May 11, starting after school at the Illusuak building.

In the town of Makkovik the Inuit Community Government started clearing the roads yesterday.

Barry Andersen is the AngajukKâk.

He says the harbour ice is pretty bad now and too dangerous to go with floating ice around the shore.

Andersen says they are making plans for their summer projects.

The first new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The second new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The third new confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is a close contact of a previous case.

There is one new presumptive positive case. Presumptive positive cases are treated the same way as confirmed positive cases and once presumptive positive cases are confirmed positive, they are reported in public updates as new confirmed cases.

The presumptive positive case is linked to Belanger Memorial School in Doyles in the Codroy Valley.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway. Anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There is no evidence of wide-spread community transmission in the area at this time.

There are three new recoveries, two in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region and one in the Central Health region and 1,064 people have recovered. One person is in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 67 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 67 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 41
· Central Health – 11
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 1
· Western Health – 14

To date, 136,298 people have been tested.

IlinniaKatigennik Contest

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism with the Nunatsiavut Government will be giving away an iPhone SE.
