Andrea Procter Award

Andrea Procter of St. John’s has received another award for her book called, “A long Journey”.

Procter says that the award came from The Atlantic Book Award with a $1000 Scholarship which she donated to the Them Days magazine.

The book is about Residential Schools in Labrador and Newfoundland.

The book is available online through ISERS Books and at Slippers and Things.

Procter adds that the book was also donated to participants of the book.

COVID-19 Vaccines for JHMS Students

COVID-19 vaccines will be available for 12 – 17-year-olds in Nain.

Joanne Pye is the Public Health Nurse at the Department of Health and Social Development.

She says the first vaccine doses will be given to the students at the Jens Haven Memorial School.

Pye added they will be at the school on Thursday, May 27th next week.

Labrador Marine Inc.

The Labrador Marine Inc. is advising that the 2021 Freight and Passenger Operations for the Labrador Coastal Service is tentatively expected to commence with the first departure of Kamutik W from Goose Bay is set for Sunday, June 13th.

Freight acceptance at Goose Bay is expected to start on Monday, June 7.

The Reservation Office will be open on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

The office are as follows:
Monday to Wednesday’s – 8am – 5pm.
Thursdays – 8am – 7pm.
Fridays – 8am – 5pm, the offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Joe Dicker NICG (Audio)

The Nain Husky Center went through some extensive damage over the weekend.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says that there was a sewage blockage on the Sandbanks road that caused the arena to flood.

Dicker adds that it will take a while to clean the arena, and they are waiting for information from the health authorities for instructions on how to properly clean the area.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Friday, May 14, Newfoundland and Labrador has six new confirmed cases of COVID-19. There are three in the Eastern Health region and three in the Western Health region.

The first new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The second new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The third new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The fourth new confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is a close contact of a previous case.

The fifth new confirmed case is a male in the Western Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The sixth new confirmed case is a female in the Western Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is a close contact of a previous case.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway. Anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There are two new recoveries in the Eastern Health region and 1,083 people have recovered. One person is in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 86 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 86 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 50
· Central Health – 16
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 2
· Western Health – 18

To date, 138,037 people have been tested.

There are no new presumptive positive cases in the province.

Scholarship Applications Due

The NGC and several of its partners promote education and opportunity through annual scholarships.

With application deadlines approaching, beneficiaries are encouraged to investigate requirements and submit their application.

NGC supports four scholarships annually worth $1,250 each.

The deadline to apply for 2021 is May 31st, 2021.

PiKalujak Fisheries supports two scholarships in each of the fall and winter semesters at Marine Institute, worth $1,250 each. Apply through the Marine Institute.

Air Borealis awards a $1,000 annual scholarship, renewable for up to 3 years to a Nunatsiavut Beneficiary. For additional details and application, email scholarship@airborealis.ca.

Torngait Services Inc. awards 5 $1,000 scholarships annually to high school students in each of the Nunatsiavut communities and one scholarship to a student in Upper Lake Melville. Apply through your high school principal.

Bird Heavy civil Limited awards a $1,500 annual scholarship to a Nunatsiavut Beneficiary. Applications are due by May 30th.

Radio Producer Assistant Job Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has obtained funding for a Radio Producer Assistant.

This position will be for a period of approximately 26 weeks.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Researching story ideas
• Interviewing, story-writing
• Transferring old formatted music and archives to new program formats
• Assisting radio producers with all aspects of radio production

The successful applicant must be willing to learn all aspects of radio production and possibly be able to produce their own youth shows with little assistance at the end of the project.

Youth will also assist with setting up audio library and Upgrading Radio press release files.

Qualifications are:
• Between the ages of 18-30
• A strong asset in Media Communications and current affairs
• Ability to work independently
• Knowledge of Inuttitut a strong asset

The salary will be $14 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.

The closing date is Friday, May 28, 2021 and starts on June 2, 2021.

Preference will be given to Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries and applications should be forwarded before 4pm on May 28 to:

Postville Inuit Community Government Projects (Audio)

Things are going well in the community of Postville except for the weather on the north coast.

Glen Sheppard is the Inuit Community Government AngajukKâk.

He says the roads are cleared to the dumpsite and airstrip, and that the crew is collecting garbage on trucks.

They also have projects for the summer, and maybe even into earlier fall.

He says the Recreation Department also has a few things on the go in the workout room and the Afterschool Program.

Sheppard adds that there are other projects they’re waiting on to start once the snow melts.
