Town Clean Up/Property Clean Up

The Nain Recreation Department will be holding a Town Clean Up and a Property Clean up this weekend.

This is sponsored by the NICG, CYN, NICG Rec. Dept. and the CYN Fire Department.

Starting Sunday, June 13 from 1-5pm, they will meet at the town dump, garbage bags and rubber gloves will be provided.

There will be a picnic with refreshments starting at 5pm near the east ramp, along with some prize draws of 2 grocery hampers valued at $200 each, gift package of 3 free bingo cards (2 recreation and 1 fire department), and a children’s bike for participants aged 12 and under. The bike will be purchased after the draw, for sizing purposes.

The Property Clean Up started on Friday, May 28, 2021.

Please take before and after pictures, this is not necessary, but it would be nice.

Properties who have already cleaned up can also enter their name for the draw, can call 922-2842.

There will also be a prize draw of a grocery hamper valued at $250, Free Water and Sewer for a year valued at $200, and a $50 Northern Card.

Removal is also available for trucks/cars/ski-doo’s.

Smart ICE Update (Audio to be added later)

The SmartICE Kamutik runs are finished for the season as of last month.

Rex Howell Jr. is the Northern Production Lead for Smart ICE.

He says SmartICE is looking for youth between ages of 19-30 for a 5-week Employment and Readiness Training Development program.

This is an opportunity for youth to learn how to build Smart Buoys, learn some online courses and build your own resumes.

Holwell says that he will begin his program on Monday, June 21st, 2021.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Thursday, June 10, Newfoundland and Labrador has five new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The first new confirmed case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The second new confirmed case is a female in the Central Health region under 20 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous case.

The third, fourth and fifth new confirmed cases are in the Western Health region under 20 years of age. The cases are a contact of a previous case and are connected to the cluster in the Western Health region.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There are seven new recoveries, six in the Central Health region and one in the Western Health region and 1,303 people have recovered.

There is no one in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 51 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 51 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 5
· Central Health – 13
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 0
· Western Health – 33

To date, 152,327 people have been tested.

Labrador Winter Games Postponed Until 2023

The Labrador Winter Games are being postponed until 2023.

Due to the potential spread of COVID-19 and the impact that could have on travel and the health of the athletes, the decision was made to delay the games.

The Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs and Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation, Lisa Dempster, and the Board of Directors for the games met in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to discuss the event last week.

The Board also met with Public Health to consider the logistics of hosting a large event during the pandemic.

The Labrador Winter Games are typically held every three years in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and were scheduled originally to take place in March 2022.

Academy Canada in Nain Finishing up for Summer Break

Academy Canada in Nain will be finishing up for summer break at the end of the day on June 25th, 2021.

Trudy McKay is the instructor at ABE.

If anyone would like to enroll for this September, they can come by Academy Canada and pick up an application form and speak to Trudy before June 25th, 2021.

This is a good opportunity to apply in person for ABE before the summer break.

Come by Monday-Friday between 9am to 3pm.

Anyone looking to apply over the summer can contact Judy Davis at abe@academycanada.com.

Academy Canada can enroll up to 15 students.

Students will return back to school on September 7th, 2021.

Domestic Fishing Licenses

Due to the ongoing global coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the Nunatsiavut Government will be offering domestic fishing licenses in area 12-E and the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area by appointment only.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement will be required to call the Nunatsiavut Government Office in their respective community to schedule a time to receive a communal fishing designation. Existing licenses are in effect until June 15, 2021.

Beneficiaries who set nets for domestic use in tidal waters 12-E and Labrador Inuit Settlement Area will require a designation from the Nunatsiavut Government after June 15, 2021. Signing a Designation is not required and the scheduling of an appointment will minimize waiting time to receive your License and tags.

Nain Husky Centre Update

The Nain Husky Centre is still under repairs from the flood last month.

We spoke with the AngajukKâk of Nain, Joe Dicker.

He says the sanitization is completed and is no longer a health hazard.

The public cannot have access to the building and there won’t be any activities as of yet until the walls are secured as the contractors are still waiting for materials to arrive.

Dicker adds that it is safe for the staff to hold bingo in the lobby and that bingo cards are sold at the new firehall.

Once the main lobby is complete, they will then hand over the key back to the Nain ICG and will notify the public once it becomes available.

2021 Heritage Forum (Audio to be added later)

The Heritage Forum for 2021 is fast approaching.

Lena Onalik is one of the Archeologists for the Department of Language, Culture and Tourism with Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that the Heritage Forum will be held in Nain at the Illusuak Cultural Center from June 14 to June 17.

Onalik says the community of Nain and community members along the coast are invited to come to Nain and visit the exhibit.

The province is reporting 3 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

The three new cases are:

• 1 case is in the Central Health region, the case is under investigation.

• 2 cases in Western Health region, previous presumptive positives, the case is under investigation.

There have also been 12 new recoveries.

There are 53 active cases in the province.
