Selections for Hebron Family on Friday

Selections for the Hebron Family will be held this coming Friday.

Lena Onalik is the Archeologist for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the meeting will take place by teleconference at 10am Friday, July 16 with the Hebron Committee Members, whom are relocates.

Onalik says three families will be selected to up north to their hometown.

The scheduled date to go Hebron is on Wednesday, August 7 to the 14th.

There will be more information once the selections have been completed.

Makkovik ICG Update (Audio to be added later)

The Makkovik Inuit Community Government is busy with some projects in their community.

Barry Andersen is the AngajukKâk for Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

He says that they have an inspector on site, monitoring the progress of the new subdivision.

Andersen also says that there are some contractors repairing the water and sewer lines and some summer student opportunities for this summer.

COVID-19 Update (Dated July 14th, 2021)

Today (Wednesday, July 14), Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last public advisory.

There are three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 aboard the second ship anchored in Conception Bay. This brings the total of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases to eight crew members. Testing of all crew is ongoing and all are isolating. One crew member is in hospital. The province continues to work closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Eastern Health regarding the two ships anchored in Conception Bay. The ships and crews are following Public Health orders as directed by the Public Health Agency of Canada. There is no risk to the community. On the ship that was announced on July 5, there remains 14 crew members confirmed COVID-19 positive at this time and testing of all crew has taken place.

There have been no new recoveries in the province since the last public advisory and 1,376 people have recovered. There is one person in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 23 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 23 active cases is as follows:

· Eastern Health – 23
· Central Health – 0
· Labrador-Grenfell Health – 0
· Western Health – 0

To date, 163,468 people have been tested.

Rigolet Cookbook Collection (Dated July 14th, 2021)

The Literacy Frontier College in Rigolet will have a cookbook collection.

Every week they will post a request for community members to share their favorite recipe, which will include that week’s ingredients.

At the end of the summer, they will have a cookbook printed of local recipes available for free for participants and for anyone in the community who would like a copy.

Recipes may be printed or handwritten, and it can include a photo and sketches, this can be submitted in English or Inuktitut.

You can submit your recipes via Facebook or bring them to the school Monday-Friday’s from 1-3pm.

If anyone would like to help record their recipes, please get in touch with one of the Community Literacy Workers Ocean, Ella, Brianna or Kara.

Free Hair Cuts for Seniors 65+ in Nain (Dated July 14th, 2021)

The Nain Recreation Department will be taking names for Free Haircuts for Seniors 65+.

Between Monday, July 19, to Wednesday July 21, 2021, they are taking 15 names for ages 65+, and 5 names for ages 50-64.

If you would like your name down, please call the NICG office at 922-2842 with your name and contact number.

Rides will also be available once appointments are set.

Congratulations NGC Scholarship Awards Recipients (Dated July 14th, 2021)

NGC provides four annual scholarships for Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries enrolled in accredited programs in business, marine, and construction trades. The fourth scholarship is reserved for women enrolled in either of these programs.

Elizabeth Zarpa of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will complete her master’s in political science at Memorial University in October. Elizabeth received an NCG Scholarship valued at $1250.

Jobe Flowers of Hopedale was enrolled in the welding program at the Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus in College of the North Atlantic and recently graduated. Jobe received an NGC Scholarship valued at $1250.

Congratulations to both Elizabeth, and Jobe.

Logo Contest (Dated July 14th, 2021)

The Division of Language and Culture is seeking a logo.

The logo must be a visual that reflects the strength and importance of Inuktitut language and culture. Please refrain from using text.

They say that the contest is only open for ages 16 and over.

The prize is a $500 VISA gift card.

The deadline for the logo contest is in September 1st, 2021 and any interested persons can send submissions to the following:

Maria E. Merkuratsuk (Audio to be added later) Dated July 14th, 2021

Maria E Merkuratsuk of Nain is a well known knowledge holder, a crafts person, who has been living off the land majority of her life.

Merkuratsuk has been cleaning seal skins for many years and has made numerous mitts and kamet.

She is very thankful to her mother, aunt and grandmother for their teachings of the seal skin.

We will be speaking with Maria E Merkruatsuk later in the PiusituKavut Program to hear more about the steps that is needed to clean a seal skin.

Testing of all crew is ongoing. The ship and crew are following Public Health orders as directed by the Public Health Agency of Canada. One crew member is in hospital, while the rest of the crew remain onboard. There is no risk to the community. The province is continuing to work closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Eastern Health while the ship remains anchored in Conception Bay.

There has been one new recovery in the province since the last public advisory. On Saturday, July 10, there was one recovery in the Eastern Health region and 1,376 people have recovered. There is one person in hospital due to COVID-19.

There are 20 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the 20 active cases is as follows:
