We spoke with Noah Nochasak to find out more details about this Labrador kayak.

He adds that he is currently looking to hire someone to help build this kayak.

Spruce Meadows Farm

Tom Angiers is the president of Spruce Medows Farm Limited based out of Happy Valley Goose Bay, located at 540 Route 520, North West River Road.

Angiers updated us just this morning on what’s available to purchase, including all fresh Fruits, Vegetables, and Meats.

Although Spruce Medow Farms get their fruits shipped in from Montreal, they are still high quality and fresh, they grow and sell vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, turnip, turnip greens, kale, and they have new fresh potatoes, fresh and ready corn on the cobb, just to name majority of what they have available.

If you are living on the North Coast, you can apply through the Nutrition North Subsidy to help cover shipping costs.

Angiers mentioned that Spruce Medow Farms will be building a 15 thousand square foot greenhouse, and is hopeful of growing their own fruit trees.

Spruce Medow Farms can also ship to you fresh meats, some including fresh eggs, ground beef, roasting chickens, turkey, ham, bacon, sausages, chicken nuggets just to name a few.

If you’re ever interested in starting your own Chicken croup, they have live chickens available to purchase, and foods to feed them as well.

Angiers also added that, once an order is placed, they hold the order until they know that flights are going ahead and flying before bringing the order to cargo.

Gas Prices

Drivers will get a very slight break at the pumps on Thursday, as the Public Utilities Board’s weekly adjustment sees the price of gas dip 1.8 cents per litre.

Prices mostly range from 185.8 cents per litre on the Avalon Peninsula, to 202.4 on the island’s south coast. The outlier is southern Labrador, where gasoline is delivered by the drum and the price is currently set at 212.5 cents per litre.

The adjustment brings bad news for diesel drivers, however, as prices are going up three cents per litre on the island, and four cents in Labrador.

Furnace oil is going up by 2.56 cents per litre, while stove oil is going up 2.56 cents on the island and 3.8 cents in Labrador.

Propane also saw a small increase of 2.1 cents per litre.

Day 6 Makkovik Trout Festival

Yesterday we aired day 6 morning of Makkovik’s 34th Annual Trout Festival.

This afternoon at 4pm they will have a BBQ at the museum ground, courtesy of VALE, all are welcome.

At 6pm there is the Albert Ford Memorial mixed doubles Dart Tournament at the community hall, with a registration of $20.

Tomorrow morning for Day 7 at 10-11am they have a Zombie Chase at the council office. Zombies must be dressed in back and living dressed in white.

From 11-11:45am carnival tickets will be for sale at the arena, and the carnival starts at 12-1:30pm at the arena, with food and drinks for sale.

We will air rest of Day 7’s afternoon events tomorrow.

COVID-19 E9

The Department of Health says the COVID-19 subvariant EG.5 has been detected in Newfoundland and Labrador.

But there is no indication that it is of more concern than the other forms of COVID circulating in the community.

They say that the World Health Organization has listed it as a variant under monitoring and not a variant of concern.

As for the potential impact on the fall booster campaign, government says they will continue to follow NACI recommendations and further details will be made public at a later date.

Coastal Recreation Departments

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted the coastal Recreation Departments for updates.

In Rigolet we spoke with Claire Brooke Blake-Pottle, a Recreation student, Blake-Pottle says that there are no events going on except for the Parents and Tots program.

In Postville we spoke with Jacqueline Harris, Recreation Director, They are holding their summer recreation program for children ages 0-4, and 5-11 daily.

In Hopedale we spoke with Stonia Nochasak, Office Assistant, They are also holding their summer recreation programs in the mornings and afternoons for children ages 5-12, with 2 students employed. They also hold evening programs with other staff from the department.

We will have Nain, and Makkovik’s Recreation updates once it becomes available.

Day 4 of Makkovik’s Trout Festival

Yesterday we aired day 4 of the Makkovik’s 34th Annual Trout Festival.

Today, Wednesday, August 9 is Day 5 for the Trout Festival. At 2-3pm there is rock painting at the arena for all ages.

6pm there is a crib doubles tournament at the community hall for ages 19+ with a $20 registration fee.

On Thursday morning, August 10, is day 6 of the Trout Festival, starting 10am they have a track and field outside the arena.

Events are standing long jump, ball throw, and sprint. Ages 5 and under will do 10-meter sprints, ages 6-9 will do 15-meter sprints, ages 10-13 will do 20-meter sprints, and ages 14-17 will do 50-meter sprints.

All participants names will be entered into a draw. At 10am-12pm they will have a museum open house and storytelling.

At 1-2pm they will have a plant walk and rock drop through Poet’s Path starting at Christine’s and ending at the church grounds with Erica MacDonald for all ages.

From 1:30-3pm they will hold their senior’s merchandise bingo at the community hall, you must bring an item to go with the game.

Come Home Year Events in HVGB

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Come Home Year.

The 2023 Come Home Year events are on going in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

The come home year began on July 28 and will end on August 13, 2023.

They began their event with a concert with Beatrice deer band, and a special guests at the EJ Broomfield Arena on Saturday July 29.

On July 30, they held a cultural day at the Kinsmen Park, featuring music, food and fashion show.

This Saturday August 5, the 50th anniversary dinner and dance will be happening at the Canuck club.

And on Wednesday August 9 the Town Council and Staff will be holding a reunion.

On Friday August 11 they will have a drive-in movie night at the Bethel Pentecostal church.

And they will end their Come Home year events with a concert with the Flummies with special guests at the EJ Broomfield Arena.

Coastal Community Freezer Updates

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted the coastal communities of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet, and Postville for updates on the community freezers.

In Nain there is char and seal available.

In Hopedale there is Capelin, and Trout.

In Makkovik there is Cod Fish, and an order of char has just been made.

For Rigolet they are closed until further notice, they will re-open again once they are re-stocked with items.

In Postville, they have Char, Cod Fish, and Capelin available.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Updates

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted the Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant’s for updates.

Angel Chaulk is the Clerk for the Makkovik Fish Plant.

There is currently one active turbot boat fishing, with a total of 105,248 lbs. of turbot landed.

Chaulk says there are 28 employee’s working, and 7 of those are students.

We also spoke with Deidi Kohlmeister, Supervisor for the Nain Fish Plant.

Kohlmeister says that all the fisherman has now finished fishing this year.

They have a total of 47, 318 lbs. of char landed, and yesterday was their last landing of fish.

The plant is now scalloping, there is 3 crew members scalloping, so far, they have 3,125 lbs. of green scallops landed today.

Kohlmeister adds that they have laid off a few employees now, as they are finished fishing, and onto scalloping.
