High School Transcripts Available Online

The Provincial Government released a new way to release school transcripts to students.

On July 19, 2021, students high school transcripts, including final marks, are now available to students throughout the province.

In an effort to reduce waste, this year’s transcripts are available digitally through the PowerSchool portal, which all students can access here.

Ninety-seven per cent of this year’s eligible graduates have met the requirements for graduation.

Makkovik Church Auction

The Makkovik Moravian Church Auction started today, July 28th, 2021.

Carol Gear is the organizer for the Auction.

Gear says that if anyone has any items to donate or if anyone would like to drop off items, they can to her, please be specific on what the items are for.

Gear says, to date she has raised $53,030.00 since the auction started back in May of 2014.

She adds that the auction will close on Wednesday, August 4th at 6pm and the highest bids posted at 5:59 will be declared the winner.

ITK President Nominations

Election of the President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanadami will take place in September 2021, following the ITK’s Annual General Meeting.

Inuit at least 18 years of age maybe nominated by the designated Member Representative of the following Organizations: Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivik Corporation, or the Nunatsiavut Government or may submit a Canadian Application Form.

Individual candidates not nominated by a member representative must provide a cover letter that outlines their experience in leadership role., knowledge of issues important to Inuit as well as a description of what they would like to achieve as ITK President, and secure the signatures of 20 Inuit, aged 18 or older, who support the candidacy.

Canadians will given 10 minute opportunity to address Members and Delegates during the ITK AGM, and are encouraged to deliver their remarks in person in the event the AGM is held in person.

In the event the AGM is held virtually, Canadians will be provided with information to join the videoconference by computer of telephone.

The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, August 12, 2021 at 5pm ET.

The President of ITK is elected through a democratic governance structure that represents all Inuit.

Votes are cast by the designated Member Representatives of Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivik Corporation or the Nunatsiavut Government, in addition to two delegates per region, and the ITK vice-president.

Jenny Merkuratsuk (Audio to be added later)

Jenny Merkuratsuk of Nain has spent most of her childhood life north of Nain.

She had her first caribou when she was eight years old after her father had given her a 22 rifle.

Merkuratsuk had also served as an ambassador for the Nunatsiavut Government in Hebron for 8 years.

She has guided many tourists off cruise ships, helicopters and sail boats that had visited the old town of Hebron.

We will be speaking with Jenny Merkuratsuk later in the PiusituKavut Show.

Update Dart Tournament Hopedale

This year will be the 3rd Annual Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament in Hopedale.

The dates are set for August 27 and 28, 2021 and will take place at the Nanuk Center, you have 1 month left to register your teams.

The prize for 1st place will be $2000, 2nd prize $1000, and the 3rd prize $500.

Teams must consist of four participants; 2 male and 2 female with a registration for each participant.

11th Annual CYN & Mr. Volleyball Tournament

The 11th annual CYN and Mr. Volleyball Tournament will be going ahead this August.

This is open to male and female divisions.

The opening ceremony will be held on August 27, 2021, at 6pm at the Jeremias Sillito Community Center.

Deadline for registration is Wednesday August 25, at 4pm.

Teams must have at least 5 players and a maximum of 7 players.

The registration fee is as follows: $30 registration fee to those who are not in high school and $20 to players who are students in high school.

Torngat Secretariat

The Torngat Wildlife, Plants and Fisheries Secretariat is looking to hire six positions to work on a new Goose project.

They are looking to hire one liaison worker and five field technicians, one based in each community in Nunatsiavut.

The Community Liaison worker will help develop and provide support to this year’s small geese research program.

This position is part time from mid-August to October 31st, 2021.

The five goose field technicians will be in each community of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, and Rigolet, the positions will involve setting up game cameras.

Postville English River Fish Count (Audio to be added later)

The Postville English River Fish Count first began their operations in 1999.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources with the Nunatsiavut Government.

Broomfield says this year they began their operations on July 5, 2021.

Under the supervision of the Senior Radio Producer, the Radio Producer prepares news, current affairs for daily broadcast on the Society’s radio network.

John Neville

John Neville is originally from Black Tickle, and now lives in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

He is well known for the songs he had sung about Labrador.

Neville says he went to perform in some Music Festivals he was invited to, including the katillautta festival in Nain.
