Native Spirit Rigolet

The Native Spirit Youth Centre is an arm of the Rigolet Inuit Community Government. Holly Flowers is the coordinator, and she briefly updated us here at the OKâlaKatiget.

They provide children and youth after-school/evening programming from Monday to Friday during the school year; and daytime programming over the summer months.

There are three slots of grades K-3, grades 4-6 and grades 7-12 with a range of 60-80% attendance rate of each group.

Some activities they offered so far this year has been, a movie day with stuffed animals and milkshakes, native games night, escape room, spa night and a “kick off to summer” dance serving poutine and smoothies.

The parties are held each Easter, Halloween, and Christmas; usually partnering with the Recreation Department.

They recently have been approved for funding to purchase new gaming devices such as, a virtual reality system, gaming consoles and chairs, iPads.

They also offer culturally based activities such as traditional cooking, story telling, parka making and celebrations in honour of local traditional artists.

Air Borealis Update(Audio)

Air borealis operates 11 twin otter aircraft on the North Coast.

We spoke with Phillip Earle the Vice President and executive for Airboreleais.

Earle says right now they have 48 pilots in total.

20 aircraft maintenance workers, 2 aircrafts contracted with Vale operations, 3 aircraft dedicated to Labrador Grenfell Health, 1 aircraft for medivac and the 4th aircraft is for scheduled passengers, with the remainder of the aircrafts they are in charge of moving cargo to the communities.

Air borealis are still holding the Childrens Coloring contest and the deadline is tomorrow August 15, 2023.

Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament Deadline

This year is the 5th Annual Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament in Hopedale.

Hannah Winters is holding the tournament, the tournament is set for this weekend, Friday, August 18 to Saturday, August 19, in Hopedale.

The teams will consist of 2 male, and 2 females, with a registration fee of $25 per player.

There are cash prizes of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and additional prizes of most turns, most finishes, 180’s, along with top male and female players.

1st prize winners receive $2,000 with sweat shirts and a trophy, 2nd prize winner gets $1,000 with long sleeve shirts, and 3rd prize winners wins $600 with t-shirts.

Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Updates

OKâlaKatiget Radio contacted the Nain Fish Plant for updates.

We spoke with Deidi Kolhmeister, Supervisor.

Last week there was a bunch of people laid off due to fishing season ending.

Eddie Sillitt is busy scalloping with his crew.

Today they landed 10,079 green scallops, with 15 employees working, and 5 shuckers.

We also spoke with Angel Chaulk, Clerk for the Makkovik Fish Plant.

There are 2 boats fishing, with 1 boat finished fishing.

Today they landed a total of 165,000 lbs. of turbot, with 26 employees working, 6 of which are students.

MR. & CYN Volleyball Tournament Deadline

This year is the 13th annual Mr & CYN Volleyball Tournament for Nain.

We spoke with Gwen Dyson, After School Program Supervisor with the Recreation Department.

The volleyball tournament is set to begin on Friday, August 18 to the 20th, located at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centree,

Teams consist of male division, and female division with 5 players, or a maximum of 7 players with a fee of $30 per player, and $20 for students in high schoool.

The deadline for registrations is on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 4pm.

Makkovik’s 34th Annual Trout Festival

Yesterday we aired the morning events for day 7 of the Makkovik’s 34th Annual Trout Festival.

This after noon they are holding the family scavenger hunt for all ages from 3-4pm, with a family bundle prize.

From 3-5pm they have their Mary Voisey Memorial Bingo at the arena, with cards for sale, and bingo starting 6pm.

At 8-9pm they have the teens minute to win it for ages 12-19 with snack provided at the youth centre.

On Saturday, August 12 is the last day for the Trout Festival.

At 10am they will have their homemade mini boat race for ages 12 and under starting at the 2nd pump house and ending at the swimming hole, with 1st prize of $75, 2nd prize of $50, and 3rd prize of 25. Your boats must have your name on it.

Starting 1-2pm they have capture the flag at the ball field for all ages.

For the Annual Carol Dyson Best Smoked Fish and Best Dessert, prizes are $50 for both contests. Entries for the best smoked fish, and best dessert can be dropped off at the gym between 1-2pm.

5pm they will have their Trout Festival supper, plates are $5. Prizes will be given out after supper, with live entertainment.

For the trout fest fashion show their theme this year is sea creatures with a prize of $100.

To end off the Trout Festival they will have a dance for ages 19+ starting 10:30-1am at the gym with live entertainment by the Hoodlums. The dance theme this year is the 80’s, with $20 admission, and a $100 prize for best dressed. please note that you must be 19 or older to attend the dance.

Nain LATP Applications

Labrador Aboriginal Partnership Training will begin accepting applications for unemployed, or undeployed applicants for their Underground Mine Training on Monday, October 30, 2023, in Sudbury Ontario.

There will also be another bundle of safety training this fall, the date is yet to be determined.

Leah Blake is the Counsellor based in Nain, and Rigolet.

Blake helps with resumes, her office hours are from 8:30am-12pm, and 1-4pm located in the old LIDC building on 2 Morhardt Road, next to the OKâlaKatiget Society building.

If you would like to attend college for trades programs, they can fund a various assortment of programs or even online with certain programs offered.

LATP Office in Hopedale

The LATP office in Hopedale are now accepting applications.

Georgia Abel is the Nunatsiavut Career Counsellor for the Hopedale office.

She says they are accepting applications for the Safety bundle training.

The tentative date is set for September 18 to the 22nd, 2023.

She adds that they can have a max of 15 clients to apply for the safety training bundle.

The safety bundle will include Standard First Aid, Fall Protection, WHMIS,
Back Injury Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Powerline Hazard.

If you would like to take part in the safety training, please pick up an application form at her office.

Abel says on December 2, 2023, they will be holding the Camp Attendant training.

The LATP is also funding any Trades programs such as the Underground Mining in Sudbury Ontario, Welder, Construction, Industry Electrician, Blaster, Business Management, Office and Business administration just to name a few.

Chris Webb NGC Updates (Audio)

Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) are quite busy with their operations this summer.

We spoke with Chris Webb President and CEO for Nunatsiavut Group of Companies.

Webb says this is the busiest year.

He gave us an update within construction work on the north coast, update on their scholarship program, brief update on Base camp, Nunatsiavut Marine, Senior’s apartments, home repair programs.
