Makkovik GSAR Inquiry Update (Audio)

This is the fourth day for the Ground Search and Rescue Hearings in Makkovik.

Jim Igloliorte is the Commissioner for the hearings.

He says that they started off by looking at the perspective of each of the witnesses who were ground searchers from Makkovik, and talked with people from the Federal Government, the RCMP, as well as the military.

Igloliorte says that himself and the lawyer who works with the commission, Jeff Budden, and Court Clerk will be coming to Nain to speak with the SAR group from Nain and will be heading back to Corner Brook next week.

He adds that everyone has been overwhelmed by emotions arising from such a long wait for the official inquiry to begin, but even with that long wait, there comes a little bit of sense that there’s some burden relieved from your shoulders.

World Suicide Prevention Day (Audio)

The Nain DHSD has some activities planned for World Suicide Prevention Day tomorrow Friday, September 10th.

Elsie Russell and Rutie Lampe are the Mental Health and Addictions workers for Nain.here

Russell says they are planned to have a lunch at the community freezer at 12 noon along with a memorial wall at the Youth Centre.

Russell adds that the Youth Centre also has a logo contest on the go with some prizes to giveaway.

Public Asked to Avoid Big River Area

The Nunatsiavut Government is supporting the filming of a television series in Labrador Inuit Lands. The filming will occur in the Big River area between September and November.

For the safety of the show’s participants and to ensure the integrity of the programming, the Nunatsiavut Government is advising that all Beneficiaries and Residents, especially in the nearby community of Makkovik, avoid the Big River area when out on the land conducting traditional activities such as hunting and gathering.

Makkovik Terry Fox Run

The Annual Terry Fox Run will be held this year on September 19th, 2021.

Linda Pottle is a volunteer and she says that they received a free plane ticket from the Makkovimiut Trust.

This is for an incentive that will be drawn at the end of the run and all funds will be sent to the Head Office in St. John’s.

This is a return ticket from Makkovik to Goose Bay.

To qualify for the draw, an amount of $125 must be collected.

Aurora Energy Ltd.

Aurora Energy Ltd. will be going out to Michelin Lake Camp near Postville next week.

Chesley Andersen of Makkovik is the Vice-President for Labrador Affairs with Aurora.

He says they will be doing a small survey project for 4 days.

Andersen says there will be two surveyors, a helicopter pilot, and two other locals from Postville and Chesley.

He says they head out to Michelin Lake Camp on Monday, September 13th.

Fuel Prices

The price of gas is up again this morning.

The regulated price of gas is up by 1.6 cents a litre.

Diesel is up by one cent, while furnace and stove oils are up by less than a cent.

Propane is up by one cent.

Makkovik and Nain Fish Plants

Everything is winding down at the Nain Fish plant and will be closing down tomorrow.

Deidi Kolmeister is the plant supervisor.

She says all the fresh frozen char, scallops, smoked char were shipped out to headquarters in Goose Bay on the last Kamutik W trip yesterday.

Kolhmeister says there are a few bags of one pound of scallops and crab left to sell. The scallop price is $19.00 a lb, and crab is $24.00 a lb.

This summer’s fishing season went well.

Meanwhile at the Makkovik Fish plant, the turbot fishery is ongoing.

Angel Chaulk is the Clerk.

She says a total of 189,681 lbs. of turbot has landed.

There are 3 turbot boats fishing and are expected to land their catches tomorrow.

Chaulk says there are 15 employees working.

She added a huge thank you goes out to all the hardworking summer students who joined them this summer season.

GSAR Hearings (Audio)

This is the third day for the Ground Search and Rescue Hearings in Makkovik.

The Commissioner for the hearings is Jim Igloliorte, and he says that everything is on schedule.

They heard from half a dozen ground search and rescue members yesterday, but they had to wrap up early because one of the witnesses wasn’t able to make it due to the weather.

Commissioner Igloliorte says that they also heard from a federal witness.

Today, they will be hearing from GSAR member Barry Andersen about the plane that crashed near Makkovik in May of 2019.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Wednesday, September 8, Newfoundland and Labrador has nine new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last public advisory.

The first new case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to international travel.

The second new case is a female in the Eastern Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The third new case is a male in the Eastern Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

The fourth new case is a female in the Western Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

The fifth new case is a male in the Western Health region under 20 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

The sixth new case is a female in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region between 20-39 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

The seventh new case is a male in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

The eighth new case is a male in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region between 60-69 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

The ninth new case is a female in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region between 50-59 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.

There are two new presumptive positive cases in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region. Once presumptive positive cases are confirmed positive, they are reported in public updates as new confirmed cases.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised regarding quarantine according to current guidelines.

There have been four new recoveries, one in the Eastern Health region, one in the Central Health region and two in the Western Health region and 1,466 people have recovered. There is one person in hospital because of COVID-19.

There are currently 40 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the active cases is as follows:

• Eastern Health – 17
• Central Health – 2
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 12
• Western Health – 9

To date, 278,001 tests have been administered.

Moose Licenses

The Nunatsiavut Government has 25 moose licenses available to be drawn and harvested by Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement for the 2021-2022 hunting season.

The 2021-2022 Beneficiary moose licenses will be distributed as follows:

– Nain, 8 licenses – 6 household draw, 2 community freezers
– Hopedale, 4 licenses – 4 household draw
– Postville, 2 licenses – 2 household draw
– Makkovik, 3 licenses – 3 household draw
– Rigolet, 4 licenses – 4 household draw
– Happy Valley-Goose Bay, 3 licenses – Community freezer only
– Northwest River, 1 license – Community freezer only

Household draw licenses will be valid for 14 days. If a license is not filled within 14 days, a new draw will take place to designate a new hunter. This will continue until all licenses are filled.

Interested Beneficiaries must apply at their local Nunatsiavut Government office and there is a limit of one license per household. You must present yourself at a Nunatsiavut Government office to have your name entered into a draw.

Proof of residency as well as your Beneficiary card may be requested.

The 2021-2022 Moose hunting season will open on September 14 and close on March 7, 2022.
