MP Jones Election Win (Audio)

Congratulations to the Liberal Party of Canada who won in the Federal Elections where the results came out late last night.

Yvonne Jones is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Labrador.

She says she is happy of the turnout of the votes and the people who supported her.

MP Jones says after being re-elected yesterday her first priorities to help her constituents is to carry on the issues she’s been dealing with.

She says some of the issues she mentioned is Search and Rescue operations, housing, home for seniors, continue highway connection, the Nain airport, mining companies, energy efficient, COVID-19 Emergency Programs and more.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Monday, September 20, Newfoundland and Labrador has 15 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last public advisory.

In the Eastern Health region:

– One female under 20 years of age. The case is related to international travel.
– One male between 20-39 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.
– One female between 40-49 years of age. The case is related to international travel.
– One male between 50-59 years of age. The case is related to travel within Canada.

In the Central Health region:

– One female between 20-39 years of age. The case is under investigation.
– One female between 40-49 years of age. The case is under investigation.
– One female between 50-59 years of age. The case is a contact of a previous known case.
– Six females 70 years of age and older. The cases are under investigation.
– Two males 70 years of age and older. The cases are under investigation.

Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised regarding quarantine according to current guidelines.

There have been seven new recoveries, three in the Eastern Health region, three in the Labrador-Grenfell region and one in the Western Health region and 1,510 people have recovered.

There is one person in hospital because of COVID-19, there are no new presumptive positive cases in the province, there are currently 46 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the active cases is as follows:

• Eastern Health – 21
• Central Health – 14
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 10
• Western Health – 1

To date, 289,370 tests have been administered.

NHL 2021-22 Pre-Season Game

Countdown is started for fans for the National Hockey League (NHL) 2021-2022 exhibition games this week.

Many hockey fans are waiting for the pre-season to begin, where the first game will start this coming Saturday, September 25.

The first game schedule is that Montreal Canadians will face off the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7pm Eastern Standard Time (ET).

And the Minnesota Wild face off the St. Lewis Blues at 8 pm ET.

Masks in Schools

Teachers, staff and students are back to wearing masks as they head back to class today.

With a fourth wave spreading across the country, the province re-introduced the mandatory mask requirement in public places on Saturday. That includes in schools.

All students and staff in K-12 must wear a non-medical mask. The same is true in all school corridors and common areas, including cafeterias.

All students and staff in grades 4 to 12 must always wear a non-medical mask in class and in common areas such as hallways. Masks will not be required in school gyms during physical activity, while music programs and the playing of wind instruments can continue.

NARVS Clinic in Nain

The North Atlantic Remote Vet Service (NARVS) is in Nain once again.

They’ll be here until September 24th, 2021 at the Nain Fire Hall.

They will be taking appointments for spay/neuter, vaccinations, general checkup, and if your pet has any physical health issues.

Coastal Polling Stations

The Federal Election Day is upon us.

All Nunatsiavut beneficiaries will join the rest of Canada to cast their vote at the polling stations today.

Nunatsiavummiut have four choices on the ballot.

Amy Norman is the candidate for the New Democratic Party.
Shane Dumaresque is the candidate for the Conservative Party.
Shannon Champion is the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada.
And Yvonne Jones for the Liberal Party.

Here is the list of the polling stations where you can cast your vote.

In Nain, you can go to the Nain Inuit Community Government in the meeting room.

In Hopedale – Nanuk Center.

Postville – Recreation Hall.

Makkovik – the local Arena.

Rigolet – Strathcona House.

North West River – Community Centre.

Upper Lake Melville – Legion and at the Base at the Park or the Mosanic Lodge.

Polling Stations are open until 8 pm this evening.

Makkovik ICG Update (Audio)

The Makkovik Inuit Community Government has a few things going on with some projects in their community.

Barry Andersen is the AngajukKâk for Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

He says that the progress of the new subdivision just about completed.

Andersen also says that there are some contractors repairing the water and sewer lines and currently is looking for more funds for new equipment.

4 New Cases

Today, Friday, September 17, NL has reported 4 new cases of COVID-19 in the province.

Two in the Labrador Grenfell Region, and two in the Eastern Health Region.

There were 15 recoveries since the last update. Leaving 38 active cases in the province.

COVID-19 Masks

The provincial government has announced that face masks will again be mandatory in all indoor public spaces, EFFECTIVE midnight tonight.

The move comes as a preventative measure, due to concern over a rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the country driven by the Delta variant.

Jobe J Volleyball Tournament

A tentative date has been set for the Jobe J Volleyball Tournament in Hopedale.

Sukie Aggek is the Recreation Director for the Hopedale Inuit Community Government.

She says that due to COVID-19, they will just go with the flow and set tentatively November 12, 13 & 14, 2021 for the tournament.

Minimum of five players and a maximum of seven players.

Admission fee will be $20 per player and the following will be awarded prizes:

Most Valuable Player, Most Sportsmanlike Trophies and there will be hoodies for the champions.
