Donation in Memory of Ches Webb

A small clay earring business donated some money to the Nain CARE in Memory of Ches Webb.

Kayla Butt is the owner of the business called, SWILL Designs in Western Newfoundland.

She says, “It is with a full heart that I announce, on behalf of SWILL Designs, we are able to donate a total of $605 to Nain CARE in memory of Ches Webb.”

Kayla says that one of her family members had also done a fundraiser in her hometown and raised a total of $330, and requested that we add this to our Nain CARE donation.

So altogether, they were able to donate $935 in his memory and was honored to do so.

Kayla would like to add that as the owner of SWILL Designs, she is so honored to be able to help the people of Nain in some small way, and that she hopes their lives are blessed because of our donation.

To the people of Nain: we stand with you. So much love to you all.

TRHA Update (Audio)

It’s been a very busy spring and summer and into this fall with a lot of construction of new homes on the north coast communities.

William Lucy is the Coordinator for Torngat Regional Housing Association.

He says there’s also some renovations in people’s homes from last year and into this year.

Both TRHA and Nunatsiavut Construction crew are working.

COVID Update (Dated October 1, 2021)

Today (October 1, 2021), Newfoundland and Labrador has 41 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last public advisory. Contact tracing by Public Health is underway and anyone considered a close contact has been advised regarding quarantine according to current guidelines.

In the Eastern Health region:
• Three under 20 years of age;
• Two between 20-39 years of age;
• One between 40-49 years of age;
• Three between 50-59 years of age; and
• One between 60-69 years of age.

There are six females and four males. There are six cases that are contacts of previous known cases, two cases are related to travel in Canada, one case is related to international travel and one is under investigation.

In the Central Health region:
• Five under 20 years of age;
• Four between 20-39 years of age;
• Two between 40-49 years of age;
• Five between 50-59 years of age;
• Four between 60-69 years of age; and;
• Eleven 70 years of age and older.

There are 18 females and 13 males. There is one case related to travel in Canada and the others are under investigation.

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting its ninth and tenth deaths from COVID-19. There is one male from the Central Health region 70 years of age and older and one female in the Eastern Health region 70 years of age and older. The department is sending its condolences to the families of these individuals and asks everyone to respect these family’s privacy at this time.

There have been 23 new recoveries, four in the Eastern Health region, 18 in the Central Health region and one in the Western Health region and 1,591 people have recovered. There are seven people in hospital because of COVID-19, three in non-critical care and four in critical care.

There are two new presumptive positive cases in the province. Once presumptive positive cases are confirmed positive, they are reported in public updates as new confirmed cases.

There are currently 180 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. The regional breakdown of the active cases are as follows:
• Eastern Health-16
• Central Health-160
• Labrador-Grenfell Health-0
• Western Health-4

To date, 308,013 tests have been administered.

Makkovik Fish Plant (Dated October 1, 2021)

The turbot fishery is finished up for the season in Makkovik.

Angel Chaulk is the Clerk of the fish plant.

She says a total of 316,062 lbs of turbot was landed this summer.

Chaulk says there are 15 employees working.

The last bit of turbot was shipped out on the Kamutik W.

She says the 15 employees will be doing a major clean up before getting laid off.

Gas Price Update (Dated October 1, 2021)

A very slight increase at the gas pumps today.

The regulated price of gas is up by less than a cent, but there have been more substantial increases in other fuels, particularly in Labrador.

Diesel fuel on the island is up by 2.3 cents a litre while furnace and stove oil on the island is up by nearly 2 cents a litre.

Propane is up by just over 3 cents.

In Labrador the price of diesel is up by 4.4 cents a litre while stove oil is up by 3.79 cents a litre.

MUN’s New Indigenous Student Resource Centre (Dated October 1, 2021)

Memorial University’s new Indigenous Student Resource Centre is being described as a home away from home for those studying on the St. John’s campus.

Known as Juniper House, the former private residence has been renovated inside and out with full input from Indigenous students. It includes a social room, computer lab, elders’ space, multimedia room and kitchen.

MUN’s new vice-president Indigenous, Catharyn Andersen, says it’s a space to build community and connections during students’ post-secondary journey.

She says it’s all about creating space and place on campus for Indigenous students to see themselves reflected in the university, inside and outside the classroom.

Juniper House is located at 208 Elizabeth Avenue, backing onto the new student residence and music school.

Amâmmiutak Program (Audio) (Dated October 1, 2021)

The Department of Health and Social Development will be doing a new program called the Amâmmiutak Program

Heather Angnatok is with the Nain Department of Health and Social Development.

COVID-19 Update (Dated September 29, 2021)

The province is reporting 16 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

One new case is located in Eastern, and 15 others are located within in the Central Health region.

There are also 4 new presumptive cases in Central Health, 7 people have been hospitalized due to COVID-19; and there is a total of 164 active cases in the province.

Missing Person (Dated September 29, 2021)

The search continues for a 47-year-old man last seen in Happy Valley-Goose Bay back on September 18th.

RCMP say area residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the town as more officers and Police Dog Services are brought in to assist in the investigation.

Todd Penney is described as six feet tall and weighing about 154 pounds. He has short brown hair and was last seen wearing a ball cap, jeans, a white hoodie and black coat.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Todd Penney is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Rigolet Truth and Reconciliation (Dated September 29, 2021)

The Rigolet DHSD will be holding some events for the Truth and Reconciliation Day for Thursday, September 30th, 2021.

From 1 pm they will be giving out some t-shirts and some bracelets for a walk around town.

Tomorrow at 5 pm they will be having a barbeque drive thru and people must reserve a plate of how many plates you need by 4:30 pm today, September 29.

There will also be some prizes to be drawn.

Jack Shiwak is going around with an Orange T-shirt for people to write their names in honour of the residential school survivors and those who haven’t made it home.
