ITK Youth(Audio)

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Youth representatives recently travelled to Nain, Nunatsiavut.

We spoke with Gordon Tootoo who is the Policy Analysis with ITK.

Tootoo came into the studio with 2 other youth, to give us an update on why they travelled to Nain.

ITK youth from all 4 regions came to Nain Nunatsiavut to experience how ITK works. They wanted to visit one of the Inuit regions, and the core was to engage and experience our region.

Smart Ice

Smart ICE in Nain is recruiting for production trainees, for youth ages 18-30.

Rex Holwell, Manager of Nunatsiavut Operations has an employment readiness and technology development program, in fall of September 18-October 12, 2023.

The workshop involves in workplace training for computer skills, resume building, managing workplace stress, effective communication, SmartBUOY technical training and production. There is also training courses such as First AID and Personal development.

The rate of pay is $17.50/h from Monday-Thursday, with 20 hours a week.

Rigolet DHSD Events

Last week OKâlaKatiget Society got updates from the coastal DHSD’s.

Today we spoke with Lorraine Allen, Team Leader for Rigolet’s Department of Health, and Social Development.

Allen says that there isn’t much on the go for the Rigolet’s DHSD.

There will be a women’s events on the 28th, and square dancing sometime this month.

On the 31st there is a Seniors Merchandise Bingo at 7pm for ages 55+, located at the Community Hall. Those attending are asked to please bring a donation of a food item to go along with a prize.

LATP Accepting Applications

Leah Blake, is the LATP councillor based out of Nain.

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is accepting applications for unemployed, and underemployed for their Underground Mine Training in fall of October 30, 2023, in Sudbury Ontario.

If you would like some training in the Underground Mine, and or you’re not sure whether you would be comfortable in an Underground Mine, LATP are accepting applications for a 3-day exposure trip to Sudbury Ontario.

There are also 2 seats left for their Safety Training Bundle in September.

Blake adds that you must fill out an application.

Plastic Identification Workshop(Audio)

There is a Plastics Identification Workshop being held next week in the town of Makkovik.

Elizabeth Pijogge, Northern Researcher in Nain, Max Liboiron, Professor at Memorial University, and Alex Bond, Natural History Museum, along with the Nunatsiavut Government Plastics Team will hold this workshop.

On Tuesday, August 29th they will begin their Workshop in Makkovik, until Thursday, August 31.

They will be located at the Community Hall, August 29, 30, and 31, hours are from 9am-4pm, and on August 29 and 30 evening hours are from 5-7pm.

The purpose of this workshop is to look at samples they collected and analyze them together. They will discuss research methods, wild food, and respectfully working with animals on the land.

Tom C Dart Tournament Results

The 5th Annual Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament took place over the weekend in Hopedale.

Hannah Winters was the host, and this was held at Hopedale’s Nanuk Community Centre’s youth room.

Finishing results for 1st place was team half and half
2nd place team was sharp shooters
3rd place team was dozen a darts.

Team Buds won the chance at free registration, and there was no 180s won this year.

Hannah Winters is sending her thanks to the kamatsiatet Committee, Hopedale’s town council, Terry’s Tense, OKâlaKatiget, the memorial of Bryce Gear, and anyone who made the Dart Tournament possible, if anyone is left out, it was not intentional.

Congratulations to the winning teams.

Nain Oil Spill

On Friday there was a report of an Oil Spill in the Nain harbor.

We spoke with Angajukâk Joe Dicker of Nain.

Dicker says there was a report of an Oil spill on Friday August 19, at 4pm.

Dicker adds that the Nunatsiavut Government are aware of the issue and Ronald Webb is the Harbor authority; he is also aware of the oil spill.

He adds there is quite a bit of oil, and the oils have already evaporated in the harbor.

Angajukâk Dicker would like to inform the Nain residence to stay away from the Nain Harbor and not to fish.

The investigation is ongoing.

OKâlaKatiget society were in contact with Jim Goudie to get a follow up on the oil spill.

Kisigilinik Workshop

The Kisigilinik Workshop held in Nain is going really well so far. Veronica Flowers, and Kim Pilgrim are the holders of this workshop.

Flowers says that this is the last week of the seal skin workshop. A couple people finished their kamiks, and the rest will finish soon.

They also had cool side workshops says Flowers. They had a seal skinning and gutting demonstrations with Nancy Ikkusek of Nain, and seal skin cleaning, and a framing workshop with Katie Winters of Nain.

They also cleaned two of their own seal skins, and they hope the skins will be good to use for future workshops.

Next summer thy are planning on running a similar kamik making workshop in Hopedale and Makkovik.

Fish Plant Updates

Updates for the Nain and Makkovik’s Fish Plants.

We spoke with Angel Chaulk, Clerk, for the Makkovik Fish Plant.

There are 4 active fishing boats, with a total of 188,248 lbs of turbot landed today.

Chaulk says there are 23 employees working, and 4 of which are students.

In Nain we spoke with Deidi Kohlmeister, Supervisor, for Nain’s Fish Plant.

Kolhmeister says they laid off 7 employees, and there are 10 employees working.

Scallop season is done, and they landed a total of 16,421 lbs of green scallops today.

The Nain Fish plant is still smoking fish, and they have smoked char, fresh fillets, and scallops for sale. Their hours are from Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

2023 High Efficiency Woodstove Program

The Nunatsiavut Government is requesting quotations from suppliers of Blaze King Catalytic High Efficiency Woodstoves and chimney materials.

All supplies must be in pristine condition upon delivery and meet the manufacturer’s standard for installation and use.

The quote is expected to have the complete price for all materials including applicable taxes and freight to Happy Valley- Goose Bay, NL.

The supplier must be capable of providing delivery of all materials on or before Oct 1/23 in order to be eligible for award.

The Deadline is: September 4, 2023, Before 4 p.m.

You must fill out an application form for the High Efficiency Woodstove program 2023.
