Santa on Air Borealis

Santa and his elves will be travelling to the North Coast this weekend.

Philip Earle is the President of Air Borealis.

He says that Santa is partnering with the Rotary club in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Air Borealis.

Santa will be travelling on plane this Saturday, December 18th to hand out gifts to children, weather pending.

Earle says that Santa will be leaving Happy Valley-Goose Bay around 8:30 am for Natuashish and will arrive around 9:30 am.

Then he will leave Natuashish around 10 am and arriving Nain at approximately 10:30 am.

Santa will attend the parade from the airport to the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre to hand out gifts to the children.

Christmas Concert

One of our OK Radio producers contacted the schools in Hopedale, Nain, Makkovik and Postville to get an update on their Christmas Concerts.

Students will begin their Christmas holidays on December 22nd and will be back to school on January 4th, 2022.

Arlene Flowers is the principal of the Amos Comenius Memorial School in Hopedale.

Flowers says that they’re supposed to have their outdoor concert today but due to high winds, they postponed the concert to tomorrow, December 16th.

In Makkovik, Dion Rideout is the principal for the J.C Erhardt Memorial School.

Rideout says they already posted most of the classes’ performance, but they are waiting on a couple more classes to finish theirs.

Kent Chaulk is the principal of the Jens Haven Memorial School.

He says they are not able to do their concert in person, but each class is setting up their performances to have it virtually.

The B.L Morrison Memorial School in Postville have not set a date yet for their concert.

OK Radio was unable to reach the Northern Lights Academy in Rigolet.

Nain DHSD Christmas Activities (Audio)

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development are busy preparing for the Christmas Season

Elsie Russell is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker.

Russell says they are so excited and it’s such a wonderful time of the year to engage with families and community members.

12 Days of Christmas Down to the Youth Centre

The Youth Centre is doing “12 Days of Christmas” where the youth have a chance to do different activities.

Kim Oliver is the Regional Youth Service Manager with the Nain Department of Health and Social Development.

She says it started on Friday, December 10th and will be going on until Wednesday, December 22nd.

Each Year, the Night Program holds the “12 Days of Christmas” for any youth ages 13 to 30.

Activities at the Youth Centre include playing cards, watching a movie, playing some video games and more.

The Night Program starts at 8:30 pm, and when the youth participate, their name will be put into a draw for a chance to win a gift.

Nain Rec. Christmas Activities

The Nain Recreation Department has some Christmas activities planned for all ages.

Today Tuesday, December 14, the Annual Youth Christmas Supper was canceled due to weather; OK Radio notify the public once information becomes available.

On Thursday, December 16 will be Senior’s ages 55 and up Christmas Dinner.

Sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Development, Nain Inuit Community Government Recreation Department, Labrador Grenfell Health Staff and Vale Inc.

If you require a ride to the dinner, please call the NICG Senior’s Van line at 922-2944 before noon.

On Saturday, December 18, there will be a Santa Claus Parade with treats given out to children ages 12 and under.

The parade will start at 11:30 at the airstrip and ending at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

All activities are held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre; for more information, you can call 922-2960 or 2961.

NWR Christmas Parade and Gift Drop

The Elf Committee is planning the North West River Christmas Parade and Gift Drop for Sunday, December 19th at 1pm starting at the Forestry Centre.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for the best floats, donated by the North West River Community Centre and the Town of NWR.

Santa will be dropping gifts and loot bags off again this year to children in their driveways after the parade.

There will be no age limit, no limited spots, no limited registration required, and is open to whoever can provide a NWR address to drop off the gift.

Parents are limited of $30 on gifts and are asked to drop gifts off to the Community Centre today Tuesday, December 14th from 6 to 8 pm.

Hopedale Christmas Tree Lighting

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government would like to notify residents of Hopedale that there will be a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

This will be taking place tomorrow, Wednesday, December 15th at the Hopedale Fire Hall at 7 pm.

They will have sing along with the choir, some hot chocolate, Tim Hortons sponsored by Air Borealis, and RCMP Toys for the North.

Postville ICG Update (Audio)

The Postville Inuit Community Government has some projects on the go.

Glenn Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for the Postville Inuit Community Government.

He says they stopped one of the projects due to temperatures and frost.

Boys Provincial Volleyball Tournament

Labrador was certainly well represented at the Boys A Division Provincial Volleyball this weekend in Doyle’s.

A huge congratulations going out to the Southern Labrador Huskies who played excellent at the Provincial Volleyball. They were awarded the Team Sportsmanship award, a very prestigious award.

Special congratulations to WGAs own Lincoln Campbell who was awarded most sportsmanlike for his team, and Adam Poole for his team MVP award.

Big congratulations to J.C. Erhardt Memorial Wolverines from Makkovik who went to the finals and placed 2nd; excellent volleyball boys!

Special thanks to Mrs. Susan Poole (teacher sponsor), Corey Elson (coach) and their parent chaperones for travelling with our students.

Christmas Vouchers

The Department of Health and Social Development office in Nain would like to inform the beneficiaries in Nain that they mailed out Christmas vouchers this morning.

Edna Winters is the Team Leader, and she would like to inform recipients of the vouchers to please hold off until the Frank’s Store in Nain has received their chickens and turkeys.

Winters says that the Franks store should receive their freight by the end of this week.

Winters adds that the vouchers are for families with low income, for large families and for seniors aged 55 years and older.
