MUN Cost Cuts

Memorial University calls the provincial budget a challenging one for them, with a cut of over $13 million in its operating grant from the province.

President Vianne Timmons says the past 6 years have been difficult. She says they have cut positions as they continue to review operations. She cites a recent review which shows MUN’s administration costs are less than the national average.

They’ve had budget cuts of over $40 million the last 6 years and lost 600 positions when enrollment is up.

Schedule for Makkovik Easter Games

The Easter Games scheduled in Makkovik have the tentative dates of Saturday, April 16, until Monday, April 18, 2022.

Kim Andersen is the Team Leader with the Makkovik Department of Health and Social Development.

The games will be out to the harbour near the community.

The Admission fee for children 13 years and younger is free and 13 year and older pay $2.

On April 16, the Irene Mitchell Memorial Shooting Match will start at 10am for anyone ages 16 years or older.

There will be also games for children ages five years of age and younger, 6 to 9 years, and 10 to 13 years of age at 10am.

At 10:45, there will be GT races for men and women, and for children ages 10 to 13 years will be at 11am.

The three-person shadow race will be at 11am for anyone to play and children ages 10 to 13 years will play the 3-legged race at 11:30am.

At 11:45am, anyone can play the backwards running race while children plays at 11:55am.

There will also be a gas can race, piggy back race, reverse piggy back race, reverse upside down race, barefoot running race, running race, human team race, Candy Cane’s Quest 120cc Mini skidoo race and a poker run.

The schedule for Sunday, April 17 and Monday, April 18 will be shared tomorrow.

Easter Game Schedule for Nain

The Easter games that will be held here in Nain have been scheduled for Monday April 18, 2022.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

To start off the Easter games with a ball hockey tournament up the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre on Saturday, April 16th, for children ages 5-16 years of age from 11am-2pm.

Then there will be men’s/women’s volleyball starting @ 2pm. To play, the registration fee is $20 a player and $10 for youth in JHMS, with a maximum of 6 players & minimum of 5. the deadline to register for this event is April 13th @ 10am.

There will be children and adult ice games being held at the Nain harbour from 1pm-2:30pm on Monday April 18th.

For the children ice games, will be egg & spoon race, piggy back race, dizzy race, wheel barrow race, crawling race, rubber boot kick, bunny hop race, Kamutik race.

And for the adult ice games the games will be dizzy race, dizzy piggy back race, Kamutik race, four legged race, pogo stick race, rubber boot kick, backwards dizzy race, barefoot running race, egg & spoon race (in mouth).

Anyone 13 years and older have ball hockey taking place at the JS center from 6pm-10pm the following day.

There will be a 120’s card game tournament from 6pm-10pm also at the JS center. There won’t be any children permitted for this event, the prizes to be awarded for 1st prize- $100 2nd prize- $75 3rd prize- $50 Boogie.

For the adults that want to play a game the fee will cost them $3 per event and for the youth they will have to pay $1 per event as for the senior 55 years of age or older will be free.

Easter games passes are available at the Nain Inuit community office passes can be used for free admission into most Easter games.

The cost of a Easter button for adults will cost $10 and for the youth will be $5 as for the seniors 55 years or older will be free.

Continue to See COVID-19 Activity

The Nunatsiavut Government is advising that there is continued COVID-19 activity in all Labrador Inuit communities.

While all provincial restrictions have been lifted, including capacity limits, masking, and proof of vaccination requirements, public health officials with the Nunatsiavut Government continue to urge residents in all communities to remain vigilant in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The virus that causes COVID-19 will likely continue to present itself in all communities, and activity may or may not be documented or reported.

Individuals with symptoms, with no known exposure to the virus, should contact 811 or complete the online assessment tool at COVID Assessment and Referrals (HOME – NLCHI) to determine if testing is required.

Second Booster Roll-Out

More information is expected this week on second COVID boosters for people in the province.

Public Health officials are considering the latest recommendations from NACI on a second booster for certain populations.

Other provinces are starting to roll out their plans for the administration of another booster shot for the elderly and other more vulnerable populations.

Health Minister John Haggie, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzerald and her team are coming up with a plan and an announcement is due in the coming days.

He expects the shots will be administered in long-term care facilities followed by personal care homes.

Hopedale Office Short Staffed (Audio)

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government Office has been short staffed for quite some time now.

Marjorie Flowers is the AngajukKak of the HICG.

She says there is no office clerk, Nanuk Centre has no manager and the Recreation facility don’t have a director.

Flowers also adds that the office is looking for volunteers to help out in the Easter Games.

Makkovik Easter Games

The Department of Health and Social Development is hosting the Easter Games schedule for the community of Makkovik.

Kim Andersen is the Team Leader with DHSD.

She says they recommend you to not attend the events if you have COVID like symptoms or are not feeling well.

Anyone aged 13 years and younger can participate for free and adults pay $2 per game.

There is an Easter Theme Snow Sculpture contest that will run all week starting today, April 11, 2022, until April 17.

Seniors aged 60 years and older also got some virtual events until April 17.

On Saturday, April 16th, there will be games at the harbour starting at 10am, where there will be a shooting match at Sandy’s Head, games for children five years and younger, GT races and more.

There will also be a virtual photo scavenger hunt that will be happening all day that day.

All entries must be submitted to Rachael Jararuse by 6pm that evening. There is a prize of $50.

Air Inuit Easter Flights

Air Inuit will be arriving to Nain tomorrow, April 12, 2022, after two years.

They will be offering Kangiqsualujjuaq and Kuujjuaq residents a chance to visit Nain this Easter from tomorrow, April 12th to April 23.

People from Nain will have a chance to visit either Kuujjuaq or Kangiqsualujjuaq.

You can use your beneficiary number, if you don’t have one, there will be a 30% discount.

Royal Highnesses Visit

Newfoundland and Labrador are to welcome Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, to Newfoundland and Labrador in May as they begin their tour to Canada to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking her 70th anniversary on the throne.

Six Deaths of COVID-19

The province is reporting six new COVID-related deaths in the province.

There are 35 people in hospital, 7 of whom are in critical care.

The highest number of hospitalizations are in the Eastern Health region with 20, six in Western Health, five in central and four in Labrador-Grenfell Health.

157 new confirmed COVID cases are being reported today, with 175 reported on Sunday and 243 on Saturday.
