Cavelle Michelin McNeal is a project support person for Impact on Inuit Women.

She says herself and her partner Renee Edmunds will be travelling to the North Coast communities during the months of May through September.

She also adds that the first community they visit is Hopedale.

MUN Returning Convocation

Memorial University (MUN) is going back to in-person convocation ceremonies this spring.

After a 3-year break, due to the pandemic, MUN will return in May and June with 17 sessions in St. John’s and Corner Brook.

As of 2,700 students will graduate this spring and Memorial will also recognize 11 people for their leadership in culture, academic and social spheres with the awarding of honorary degrees.

Convocation takes place Corner Brook Civic Centre on May 19 and at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre from May 30 to June 3.

Among the Honorary Degree recipients is Labradors own Education Historian, and Geneology Expert, Patricia Way.

Dr. Patty Way was born in Labrador and has been a significant educator and historian for more then 50 years. Establishing the groundwork for comprehensive genealogies for many all over Labrador.

Ms. Way has been involved in many committees, including Smart Labrador, development associations and zonal boards. Them days has published much of her work in their historical quarterly, has edited several books on Labrador and has been acknowledged as a Labradorian of Distinction.

Postville Easter Games

The Postville Recreation Department has some exciting Easter Sports and activities for families scheduled for today April 20, 2022.

Jacqueline Harris is the Acting Recreation Director.

Families had a chance to do a digital scavenger hunt this morning at 11am.

At 1pm, children started their indoor games at the Kaipokok Community Centre. They’re doing games for children in age categories from zero to grade 12.

There will be a potluck for the community at the Kaipokok Community Centre at 5pm.

At 8pm, anyone who is 14years and older, has to be accompanied by a partner who’s 19 years or older.

Tomorrow, April 21, at 10am, adults will have outdoor games on the ice off Goudie’s Point.

At 6:30pm, a table can be purchased for $10 at the Easter Fair and your to call.

If anyone’s interested to get a table you can call the community Centre during work hours at 479-9775.

Nain Easter Games

The children’s ice games were supposed to take place on Nain harbor today, but due to the weather have been moved inside to the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre (JSCC).

There will be many games played from 1 to 3pm.

From 7 to 10pm, Inuit games for adults ages 13 years and older will be at the JSCC.

Also a Easter cake decorating contest, and the cakes must be delivered at the back door by 7pm for judging and all cakes will be auctioned off.

The first prize winner will get $250, second prize will get $175, and third place winner will get $100. The winners will be announced at 7:30pm.

Adults will also be doing a plastic bag seal skin mitts and chimo plastic knitted cap contest at JSCC.

Tomorrow, Thursday, April 21 at 1-3pm, weather permitting, adults and children will be doing more ice games down on the Harbor.

There will be an “Entertainment Night” tomorrow at 7pm. The night features “David Hart & Band”, “The Beardos”, and other local performers will be singing. There will also be a prize draws for anyone 16 years of age and older of an iPhone 12 Pro Max, gas, stove oil and a $100 bingo card.

COVID Update

The province is reporting 10 new COVID-related deaths, the highest total in a single reporting period to date.

There are 31 people in hospital due to the virus, seven of whom are in critical care.

Meanwhile, after a period of steadily dropping case numbers, the number of confirmed cases are up again.

189 confirmed COVID cases were reported on Tuesday and another 179 today.

That is up considerably from lower case counts reporting over the long Easter weekend.

NG President Offers Condolences on Passing of Inuit Elder, John Jararuse

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says he was saddened to hear of the passing of Inuit Elder John Jararuse last evening at the age of 74.

Mr. Jararuse was born in Hebron and was 11 years old when he and other members of the community were relocated after the Moravian Church announced plans to close its missionary. He and his family were among the first to move to Nain.

“John was very passionate about his roots, his culture and in promoting, enhancing and preserving Labrador Inuktut – having served many years as an interpreter/translator for both the Labrador Inuit Association and the Nunatsiavut Government,” notes President Lampe. “He enjoyed his time on the land, was a gifted storyteller, and was always happy to provide his knowledge and advice.”

Mr. Jararuse also served as a member of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement Ratification Committee and the Torngat Mountains National Park Co-Management Board and assisted in archaeological research in Hebron over the years.

“John was well-known throughout Nunatsiavut, and will be missed by many,” says President Lampe. “I want to extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Tribute to John Jararuse (Audio)

The OKalakatiget Society would like to make a tribute to John Jararuse who recently passed away at the Long Term Care Centre in Happy Valley, Goose Bay.

John Jararuse lived in Nain after being relocated from Hebron in the 1950’s.
He was wellknown for his storytelling as well as musical skills.

Jararuse was the last of the Nain Moravian Church Organists where he served the church for many years.

He also worked at OKalakatiget Society as Radio Producer/Translator, and served on the OKalakatiget Society Board for many years.

OKalakatiget Society would like to extend Condolences to the Family and Friends of John Jararuse.

Visitation In Long-Term Care

Visitation in long-term care and inpatients in a hospital setting can now have 2 visitors at the same time.

Patients and residents are no longer required to identify designated visitors and support persons for visitation.

Multiple visitors/support persons are permitted with no more than two visiting at the same time.

To comply with physical distancing requirements, and support person is included as one of the two visitors during visiting hours.

If a patient, resident or loved one feels that a support person is required for additional support or assistance outside or regular visiting hours, they should discuss their request with their clinical care team.

Please note that some areas/units may not be able to accommodate two visitors at the same time due to the space availability and the need to maintain physical distancing requirements.

In these cases, clinical care teams will work with families to identify visitation options.

NL Report Cases

COVID-19 have claimed 5 more lives within the province of NL.

The latest numbers are out today, the first update since Wednesday.

There are 34 people in the hospital because of the virus, 6 of whom are in critical care.

COVID cases are dropping. Other numbers show 79 new confirmed cases as of today, 109 on Sunday, 137 on Saturday and 176 on Friday.

Official numbers are based on tests and residents who choose to log their positive rapid teats online.

The bulk of hospitalizations are in the Eastern Health Region at 17, with 8 in Eastern Health, 8 in Western Health, 5 in Central Health and 4 in Labrador Grenfell Health.

Also, as of yesterday April 18th, there were 29 positive cases of COVID-19 in Voisey’s Bay.

There isn’t anyone in isolation at this moment.

And there is 28 people in modified isolation.

Postville Easter Sports

The Postville Recreation staff also got their Easter Sports schedule set up for their community.

Jacqueline Harris is the acting Recreation Director with the Postville Inuit Community Government.

The sports will happen from April 19 until April 22, 2022 out on the ice off of Goudie’s Point.

On Tuesday, April 19th, at 10AM the Annual Bryce Gear Memorial Shooting Match will be held for anyone ages 16 years and older.

The judging for the Snow Sculpture contest will start at 3pm.

At 6pm, there will be the Easter bingo, cards will be sold at the Kaipokok Community Centre from 3 to 5pm.

The day will end with a dance for children ages 12 years and younger at the Community Centre.

On Wednesday, April 20, families will be doing a digital scavenger hunt at 11am.

There will be outdoor games all afternoon from 1 to 5pm, for children ages zero to 2 years of age, 3 to 4 years of age, students in grade kindergarten to grade 2, grade 4 to grade 6, grade 7 to grade 9 and grade 10 to grade 12.

At 5pm, the community will be having a potluck at the Community Centre.

There will be a poker run that evening at 8pm for anyone ages 16 years and older and anyone ages 14 years and older that’s accompanied by a partner that’s 19 years and older.
