COVID-19 & Influenza Vaccine (Audio)

The Nain DHSD held a COVID-19 and influenza vaccine earlier this week for residents.

Megan Hudson is the Public Health team worker.

She says they had a good turn out for the COVID-19 and Influenza vaccine clinic that took place at the DHSD here in Nain.

She still encourages people to take their COVID-19 and Influenza vaccine.

If anyone who missed out on an opportunity to receive the shots, you can call the Public Health at 922-2962 to make an appointment.

OK Seeking Two Media Interns

The OKâlaKatiget Society has obtained funding for two Media Interns.

This position will start June 1st, 2022 for 20 weeks.

Restrictions include but are not limited to:

• Transcribing
• Contribute to the TV Department as an assistant in transferring of television shows to VHS and DVD format
• Help to transfer old format music and audio files to digital
• Will be trained in use of cameras and filming of shows for production of “Ilonnata”
• Researching story ideas
• Interviewing, story-writing
• Assisting radio producers with all aspects of radio production, and
• Any other duties in TV production as required

You must be between the ages of 18 to 30, have a strong interest in Media and Communications, the ability to work independently, and knowledge of Inuttitut language a strong asset.

The ad will run until position is filled.

Youth Symposium

There will be a Youth Symposium held here in Nain on June 11, 2022.

Heather Angnatok is the Regional Youth Administrator; she will be the one who will be holding the youth gathering.

She says this gathering for youth who will be learning about Language and Culture for a whole week, with 32 youth participating.

She is hoping for 5 youth in each community on the North Coast, 5 youth from the Upper Lake Melville, and 2 youth from the Canadian Constituency, with elders who will present as well.

Any youth who are interested would need to know why they would like to attend and explain what language and culture means to them.

The deadline to apply will be June 10, 2022, for anyone who is interested.

They will hold a meeting next week with more details and will notify the public once information becomes available.

Janeway Radio Telethon

Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s will be holding its Annual 2022 Radio Telethon next month.

Janeway says the funds you raise are so important for our children’s healthcare, which helps in the early diagnoses and treatment of illness and injury.

Let’s give our children every opportunity to live their best lives.

By-Election in Constituency of Postville

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement residing in the Constituency of Postville will head to the polls on June 30th to choose an Ordinary Member to fill a vacant seat in the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Nominations will close at 2pm on June 15.

MHA Lela Evans (Audio)

The MHA for the Torngat Mountains District, Lela Evans has been very busy working with her constituents along the coast.

She says one of the things that she’s been dealing with is the fuel prices.

She is concerned about the rise of the prices for the North coast, especially for those who hunt for wild food.

Evans adds that the restrictions on the Kamutik W will be removed and there number of passengers won’t be limited.

Town Clean-up and Property Clean-up (Dated May 25, 2022)

The Nain Recreation Department and CYN will be hosting a Town Clean up next month.

It will be on June 12, 2022, starting from 1 to 5pm meeting down to the town dump.

Gloves and garbage bags will be provided, along with a picnic and refreshments near the East Ramp at 5pm.

There are prize draws of two draws for grocery hampers valued at $200, gift package of three free bingo cards, two recreation cards and one fire department card, and a children’s bike for participants 12 years and younger.

Anyone in the community can also do a property clean-up starting on Saturday, May 28.

There are prize draws of a grocer hamper valued at $250, free water & sewer for a year valued at $200, and a $50 Northern gift card.

Participants have a choice to do before and after pictures, but it is not necessary.

Properties that have already been cleaned up before Saturday can also enter.

Removal of a truck, car or skidoo is available.

Participants must call the town office to enter your property and they will view the property.

The clean ups are sponsored by the Nain Inuit Community Government, the Nain Recreation Department, CYN, and the Fire Department.

NGC Community Meetings (Dated May 25, 2022)

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies will be holding a community meeting in Rigolet tomorrow, Thursday, May 26, at 12 noon at the Community Hall.

They are asking the public to come out and meet to hear what they are up to and to hear your feedback. There will be refreshments.

The community meetings for Makkovik, Nain, Hopedale and Postville will be set at a later date.

NL Marks 5 More COVID-19 Related Deaths in the Province (Dated May 25, 2022)

13 people are in hospital, 2 in critical care.

Newfoundland and Labrador are reporting 5 deaths due to COVID-19 over the last week, raising the provincial total to 182 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Two of those were in the Eastern Health area, one was in Central Health and two were in Western Health.

Meanwhile the province reported 366 new cases since the last Wednesday update: 60 on Thursday, 72 on Friday, 32 on Saturday, 41 on Sunday, 34 on Monday, 63 on Tuesday and 64 on Wednesday.

Caribou Meat Update (Dated May 25, 2022)

The caribou meat arrived in Nain yesterday and the community freezer workers are getting it ready.

They will be doing deliveries to each household once they have the meat bagged up.

Each household will be getting one bag depending how much have been shipped.

They started deliveries this morning, if there are any left-overs they will deliver more tomorrow.

There are no updates on when the musk ox meat will be coming in.
