38th Janeway Fundraiser Radio Telethon (Audio)

The 38th Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation Fundraiser went really well this weekend on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

Rebecca Dutton is the President and CEO for the Foundation.

She says the turnout of donators from Newfoundland and Labrador was a really big help; a total of $2,754,053 was raised, and this year’s goal was $2.5 million.

NHL Playoffs Continue (Dated June 6, 2022)

The NHL playoffs continued over the weekend.

On Saturday, June 4, Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers by 4-2.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Ranger Team, 3-2 on Sunday, June 5, the game started at 4pm.

Tonight, Monday, June 6, the Colorado Avalanche will face off with Edmonton Oilers, the game starts at 9pm.

Youth Centre Update (Dated June 6, 2022)

The Youth Centre in Nain has lifted the mandate for face masks, but they are still encouraged.

Kim Oliver is the Regional Youth Services Programs Manager.

She says the hours during the summer will be from 8:30pm to 8:30am.

The staff has also been delivering rapid tests since the beginning of April for students to get tested.

Oliver adds that starting this summer, when school finishes, the Youth Centre staff will be doing weekly prize draws with prizes yet to be determined.

Helping Residents With the Cost of Living (Dated June 6, 2022)

Investments that help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with the impact that global events are having on the cost of living, advancing a financial plan that puts the province on stable footing, and strengthening our communities were focal points of the spring legislative agenda.

‘Budget 2022: Change is in the air, was passed and confirms government’s target to be in surplus position by 2026-27. There was an emphasis on the cost of living with the package of supports totaling approximately $142 million. This includes increases in the income supplement and senior’s benefit. As well as border measures such as a reduction in motor registration fees and the removal of retails sales tax on home insurance premiums.

Subsequently, government also announced a reduction in the provincial tax on gasoline and diesel and a one-time payment to be provided in the fall to supplement the cost of furnace oil used for home heating. Altogether, government is providing $222 million to help residents cope with cost-of-living pressures.

In addition to budget 2022, legislation passed during this sitting include:

– A new access to health and education services Act that will establish safe access zones around facilities in which health and educational services are provided.
– Amendments to the judicature act that will allow for the appointment of an additional supreme court judge in the province.
– Amendments to the urban and rural planning act that help improve services to municipalities and residents and results in the more effective and efficient appeals process.
– Amendments to the Petroleum products act that increase transparency in the fuel pricing process.
– Amendments to the access to information and protection of privacy act to add the inquiry respecting the treatment, experiences and outcomes of Innu is children in the child protection system to schedule B of the act.
– Amendments to the income tax savings plan act and the pension plans designation of beneficiaries act that allows for the designation of beneficiaries through electronic means.

ITK Inuit Nunangat Policy (Dated June 6, 2022)

Within Inuit Tapiriit Canada, the Inuit Nunangat Policy applies to all Federal departments and agencies, guiding them in the design, development and delivery of all new or newest Federal policies, programs, services and initiatives that apply in Inuit Nunangat and/or benefit, including programs of general application and support Inuit self- determination.

The purpose of this Policy is to promote prosperity and support community and individual well-being throughout Inuit Nunangat with goal of social-economic and culture equity between Inuit and other Canadians.

One-Way Zone Begins (Dated June 6, 2022)

The Nain Inuit Community Government (NICG) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are now putting the effort to enhance the safety for the students for the Jens Haven Memorial School and the Primary School.

The one-way traffic zone will be starting today, Monday, June 6, 2022, between the hours of 11:45am and 1:15pm and from 2:45pm to 3:15pm.

Residents who are not picking up their children from school are asked to avoid this zone during these times to avoid traffic congestion.

They realize that this will take some getting used to but if we work together, we will make traveling to and from school safer for our children.

SmartICE Update (Audio) (Dated June 6, 2022)

The SmartICE here in Nain are looking to hire five youth for the cohort that will be happening end of June.

Rex Holwell Jr is the Northern Production Lead.

He says the job ad been out now for a couple of weeks, they are looking to hire youth ages 19-29 and they are still taking names.

OK Seeking Two Media Interns

The OKâlaKatiget Society has obtained funding for two Media Interns.

This position will be for 20 weeks duration.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Transcribing
• Contribute to the TV Department as an assistant in transferring of television shows to VHS and DVD format
• Help to transfer old format music and audio files to digital
• Will be trained in use of cameras and filming of shows for production of “Ilonnata”
• Researching story ideas
• Interviewing, story-writing
• Assisting radio producers with all aspects of radio production, and
• Any other duties in TV production as required

You must be between the ages of 18 to 30, have a strong interest in Media and Communications, the ability to work independently, and knowledge of Inuttitut language a strong asset.

The ad will run until position is filled.

NF Symphony Orchestra Performance Night (Audio)

There was an interesting and enjoyable evening at the Nain Moravian Church on Wednesday, June 1

The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra held a get together with the Nain Choir and the Brass Band.

There were over 30 people that attended including the performers.

Hopedale Town Clean-Up

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government started their town clean-up on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

They are encouraging all residents to clean up in and around their properties.

If you have any big-ticket items such as furniture and old vehicles etc., you must remove the oil before they can move it, you can place it beside your dumpster or call the office to have it removed at 933-3864.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month.

To be eligible, you must call the town office and this contest does not apply to the HICG staff and affiliates for the prizes.
