Inuktitut Speak Off Going Ahead (Audio)

The Inuktitut Speak off will be going ahead this month.

Christine Nochasak is the Inuit Programming Specialist.

She says the North coast community school students will be taking part from each of their schools again this year.

Nochasak says the event will take place at the Illusuak Cultural Centre in Nain on Monday, June 13, 2022.

She adds that the doors will open for the public at 5:45pm for anyone who would like to attend.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Continue

The Stanley Cup playoffs continued last evening, Tuesday, June 7 at 9pm.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Rangers 4-1.

There is no scheduled game for tonight.

Tampa Bay Lightning continues to play against the New York Rangers team on Thursday, June 9th at 9pm.

Postville Community Clean-Up

The Postville Inuit Community Government (PICG) invites residents to go and clean the community.

There will be two evenings of the community clean-up, 6:30pm tonight, Wednesday, June 8, 2022, and Thursday, June 9.

Residents are asked to meet in front of the PICG Office and be designated an area within the community to clean.

People who attend the community cleanup will have their names entered for a draw each night.

The prizes for the first night for children up to and including Grade 6, have a choice of a pedal bike or a $200 visa gift card, kids grade seven to grade 12 have a prize draw of Beats headphones and adults have a prize draw of a screen tent.

The prize draw for the second night, children up to and including grade six have a choice of a pedal bike or a $200 visa gift card, children in grades seven to 12 got a prize draw of Beats headphones and adults got a prize draw of a propane bbq.

Domestic Fishing Licenses

Domestic fishing licenses for the 2022 season in area 12-E and the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area will be available at Nunatsiavut Government offices in Upper Lake Melville and Nunatsiavut on June 15. Existing licenses expire on the same date.

Beneficiaries who set gillnets for domestic use in tidal waters of 12-E and the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area will require a designation from the Nunatsiavut Government after June 15, 2022.

NL Records 1st COVID-19 Death of Someone Younger Than 20

Province marks 3 deaths in the past week, with 5 people in hospital.

Three people have died due to COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador in the past week, including the provinces first death of someone younger than 20.

The other deaths were a person in their 40s and a person in their 60s. All deaths were in the Easter Health region, according to the provinces weekly COVID-19 update. The provinces total number of COVID-19 deaths is now 187.

The province is also reported 464 new cases since last Wednesday: 60 on Thursday, 66 on Friday, 115 on Saturday, 64 on Sunday, 40 on Monday, 46 on Tuesday and 73 on Wednesday.

Five people are in hospital due to the coronavirus, unchanged since last Wednesday, with two of them in critical care, also unchanged.

Those numbers are not necessarily a true reflection of the spread of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador, since the health department has restricted testing and no longer releases the numbers of tests completed.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

The playoffs in the Stanley Cup challenges continued last night, Monday, June 6 at 9pm.

The Edmonton Oilers are gone from the playoffs where Colorado Avalanche beat the Oilers in overtime 6-5.

The New York Rangers will play against the Tampa Lightning team tonight, Tuesday, June 7 at 9pm.

The playoffs for tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 8th is to announced.

Torngat Fisheries

Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative Society Limited will be holding their Community Meetings and Annual General Meeting on the following dates:

Postville Wednesday, June 8 at 10am at the Community Recreation Centre.

Makkovik, Wednesday, June 8 at 7pm at the Community Youth Centre.

Note: two delegates will be elected from each community to attend the Annual General Meeting.

Nain on Wednesday, June 15 at the Nunatsiavut Building Board Room starting at 1pm.

Coastal Community Freezers

OK Radio called each of the communities to see what meats they have in their community freezer.

The Hopedale community freezer is offering moose meat, and dry good such as flour, teabags, salt, baking powder, and sugar twin.

They are running low right now on the dry goods, after that is gone, they won’t have anything else to give.

The Makkovik freezer has some Artic Char and smoke char.

The Postville community freezer got some musk ox and some cod fish.

The Rigolet community freezer will be restocked and they have very little at this point.

OK Radio have more information for the Nain community freezer once it is available.

Last IlinniaKatigennik Program for the Summer

OKâlaKatiget Society has started their summer hours as of yesterday, Monday, June 6, 2022.

This means that today, June 7th, is the last day to air the IlinniaKatigennik Program until we are back to regular hours.

The summer hours for the OK Society will end sometime in September and we’ll notify the public when IlinniaKatigennik will be back on the air.

We will still be recording stories, so if anyone would like to record any stories or sing Inuttitut songs they are welcome to do so.
