Ice Watch Competition (Audio)

Ice Posts are being added to the SIKU App by people across Inuit Nunangat over the spring.

The SIKU App makes it easy to share ice knowledge by including photos, videos and tagging Inuktut sea ice terminology.

The Ice Watch competition is sponsored by the North West Company, Contant and Uvagut TV.

Every week between March 17th and June 30th, 2022, one SIKU Ice post will be selected as the winner and its creator will receive a $100 gift card from the Northern Store.

First Place grand prize is a 2022 600A Sport Grand Touring Skidoo, second place will get a $500 Northern gift card, third place will get a $250 northern gift card and there’s a bonus grand prize of a homemade harpoon.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Continue

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Rangers team by a score of 3-1 last night.

There is no hockey game tonight.

The New York Rangers will play against the Tampa Bay Lightning team tomorrow night, Saturday, June 11 starting at 9pm.

The next hockey game is to be announced after this game finishes tomorrow night.

Nain Wind Turbine Update

Nunatsiavut Government is completing an environmental review of the Nain Micro-Grid Project, under the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act.

Led by Natural Forces and the Nunatsiavut Secretariat (the Proponent), the project plans to build wind turbine(s), battery storage and associated infrastructure in Nain to reduce diesel reliance for electricity generation.

The project description is available on the Nunatsiavut Government Website at www.nunatsiavut.com. You may also request it by e-mail from the proponent at jbyrne@naturalforces.ca, and a paper copy can be requested from your Nunatsiavut Liaison Officer (CLO).

The Nunatsiavut’s Department of Land and Natural Resources is currently conducting public consultations to gather the views of the Nunatsiavummiut regarding the project, as well as Inuit knowledge about the environment of the site of the project and potential environmental impacts.

Comments can be submitted to your CLOs at your Nunatsiavut Community Office, or by e-mail at environmentalreviews@nunatsiavut.com.

Please note that comments received in writing will be publicly available.

Due to Nunatsiavut Government Elections, the public consultation period has been extended to 90 days. The deadline for public comments is Monday, July 18.

Coastal National Indigenous People Day

The Illusuak Cultural Center here in Nain will be holding events for the National Indigenous People’s Day.

The starting date of the events will be on Wednesday, June 15th with Inuttitut drop-in.

On Thursday, June 16th, they will play an Inuit movie in the theatre.

They will hold an Elder’s tetupvik on Monday, June 20th, and on June 22nd will be the National Indigenous People’s Day with aboriginal events during that day.

On June 27th, they will have another Elder’s tetupvik, and another Inuttitut drop-in on June 29th.

Them Days AGM

Them Days Inc. held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, June 1st at 7pm.

The AGM took place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The agenda items included: financial statements, re-appointments, auditor appointment and renumeration, pre-exception rights, purchase of own shares, and consolidation of shares to name a few.

Board of Directors re-elections: Patrick Andre, Kath Durant, Dinggai Gao, Fredirick Helfer, Jane Hinkley, Douglas Hurt, John McDonough, and Guy Young.

Ordinary Member, Roxanne Barbour (Audio)

On May 20th, 2022, Ordinary Members in Nunatsiavut were sworn in to the Nunatsiavut Assembly to represent our respective communities.

Roxanne Barbour, is one of the two Ordinary Members for Nain.

She says she will be facilitating monthly community drop-ins at the NG Boardroom and have discussions with beneficiaries about their issues concerning Nain.

She is also willing to go to people’s homes if they are unable to go to her office, but would have to set up a date as to when they would like to meet.

Barbour adds that she is available to meet with beneficiaries from 10:30 to 11:50am, Monday to Friday.

Youth Symposium (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social Development have planned the Youth Symposium for next month.

Heather Angnatok is the Regional Youth Administrator and she is the one holding the event.

The symposium will be from July 11, 2022 to July 15.

They are inviting up to five youth from each of the five Nunatsiavut communities and also in the Upper Lake Melville area, and hopefully get one elder from each community.

Carey Price Wins Award

Canadian Fans, Montreal Canadiens goalie, Carey Price, has won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL player who best qualities sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Price won the award over finalist Zdeno Chara of New York Islanders and Kevin Hayes of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Price praised Chara and Hayes and all other nominees for springing back and thanked the Canadians Organization, its fans and his teammates before” most importantly” thanking his family without whom “this would have been a lot more difficult”.

Price said,” I’m very grateful to have all these people in my life”.

The award is named after Bill Masterton, a former Minnesota North Stars player who died following an injury sustained in a game during 1967-1968 season.

Nain Church Members Meeting

The Members of the Church in Nain held a meeting on Wednesday, June 8.

There was a good turnout during the meeting at 4pm.

Simon Kohlmeister is the Chief of the Community members he chaired the event.

He told the members that he will be finished his position at the end of June.

The attendees all thanked him for all the help he did for the church and the congregation for quite a few years.

Kohlmeister mentioned about the old Boarding School will be torn down.

He added Bishop., Paul Graff will be visiting Nain sometime in August.

Also, there will be volunteers needed to spring clean the church this coming Saturday, June 11 starting at 1pm, volunteers please come down and help.

The graveyard that’s full will need repairs on the fence, the sand inside keeps pouring out when it rains. The bottom of the fence is about a foot high off the ground. This includes the new graveyard where it starting to erode.

Some information will be given out once there is more news available.

Caribou in HV-GB

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement residing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay are advised that frozen caribou meat is available.

Meats can be picked up at the Salvation Army parking lot on Churchill Street today, Thursday, June 9, 2022.

Elders who are 65 years of age and older are eligible to receive the caribou. Only one meal per household.

For those who are unable to pick up the caribou, alternate arrangements will be made to ensure a meal is delivered to them.
